Chapter 5

Author: Thirteen Pennies
Without me, he would have ended up working in some factory, living the kind of dead-end life where you could already imagine the finish line.

Julian stayed silent.

His silence only made his friends even bolder.

“Julian, you’ve already done more than enough for her. You fed her, spoiled her, and let her live in a luxury house.

“Are you really going to waste your whole life on some washed-up housewife?”

“Honestly, if we’d known things would turn out like this, we never would’ve played matchmaker just because she bought us a few meals.”

“Seriously. Back then, she spent money so freely, I thought she was some rich heiress. It turned out she was just pretending to be wealthy.”

“At the end of the day, we’re the ones who ruined your life. Don’t worry, we’ll help you get back on the right track.”

I laughed when I heard that.

Birds of a feather really did flock together.

A few meals?

Back in college, while chasing after Julian, I paid for all three meals a day for them throughout all four years of university.

Whenever I took Julian traveling, I brought them along too.

Even when I bought Julian gifts, I made sure every single one of them got something as well.

Despite having eaten my food and accepted my gifts, they were sitting here encouraging him to divorce me.

Still, they were not doing it for Julian’s sake.

They simply believed Vivian had more money and could offer them more benefits.

“Julian, if you’re worried about your reputation, we can fake evidence and say she cheated first. That way…”

Bang!

I stopped listening and pushed the door open.

The room instantly fell silent.

Julian stiffened. Panic flashed across his face as he instinctively tried to explain himself.

Then he suddenly remembered we were still in a fight, and his expression immediately hardened again.

He glanced at the time.

“It’s not even six yet and you already left work early again. It looks like you still haven’t learned your lesson. In that case…”

I looked at him in surprise.

So he did not even know I had resigned.

Then again, he had been too busy throwing Vivian a birthday party to even check whose resignation request he approved.

He really did care about her.

I cut him off with a cold laugh.

“No need. I already quit.”

“Quit? Since when?”

Julian was startled for a moment before suddenly seeming to remember something. He rubbed his forehead impatiently.

“Fine. The project’s already secured anyway, so we don’t really need you anymore. Do whatever you want.

“I was trying to be nice and let you keep your name on the project so you could still earn some commission, but if you don’t want it, I won’t force you.”

I raised an eyebrow.

He really did not know the project had already been canceled.

I was just about to say something when the roar of an engine sounded from downstairs.

A limited-edition luxury car worth millions of dollars, something money alone could not buy, pulled up outside the house.

Julian’s friends immediately got excited and started showing off in front of me.

“Bet you didn’t know this. Vivian took her mother’s last name, Jenkins. Her father’s family name is Lane, as in the Lane Corporation.”

“That car downstairs belongs to her brother. He’s definitely here to deliver her birthday gift.”

“Lydia, you’re screwed for offending Vivian.”

“Both of your family names are Lane but your lives are worlds apart. That’s fate. You should accept it.”

They rushed to open the door, completely missing the ugly look on Vivian’s face.

Julian lifted his chin smugly.

“For the sake of our years together, if you hand over all your clients and resources to Vivian, I’ll allow you to stay home as a full-time housewife. Otherwise…”

I knew exactly what he meant. He was trying to threaten me with divorce, to squeeze out every last bit of value I still had.

I ignored him.

At that moment, the door opened.

Lucas walked in wearing a sharp tailored suit, brushing right past Julian’s friends and their eager attempts to flatter him. He came straight to me and patted my shoulder gently.

“Lydia, are you done packing? Mom and Dad are waiting for us for dinner.”

Julian stared at me in complete shock.

I calmly pulled out the divorce decree and handed it to him.

“Oh, right. I forgot to tell you that my parents already withdrew the hundred-million-dollar project.

“And as for your offer, there’s no need anymore because we’re already divorced.”

It was I who had been too indulgent with him from the very beginning, too quick to forgive. That was why, even now, he still tried to deceive me, using so-called “for your own good” excuses to guilt-trip and control me.As he continued blaming me, someone who knew the truth beside us could not hold back anymore.“You’re the least qualified person to say that. She gave up wealth and cut ties with her family just to be with you.“Otherwise, do you really think someone like you could ever be accepted by a wealthy family?“She gave up everything for you and stayed with you through the hardest years, and you still betrayed her sincerity and stand here spouting nonsense.”Julian trembled when he heard every word of those. Then, his eyes reddened and he looked at me with sudden emotion.“Lydia, I was wrong.”He dropped to his knees in front of me, pleading desperately.“I admit it. I was biased toward her. I was confused. I lost my mind.“Can you give me one more chance? I’ll make

I looked at the porcelain doll in front of me.It was not anything fancy or authentic. It was just a cheap piece, barely over ten dollars.I still remembered it from five years ago, right after we got married. That year, on my birthday, Julian and I got home after work.I casually pointed at the inexpensive doll and said it looked nice.In reality, I was trying to hint for him to pay a little more attention to me, and maybe even remember my birthday. However, he kept his head down, busy with work, only giving me a half-hearted response.“Yeah, it’s nice. Let’s just go home first. I still have work to finish.”I nodded in disappointment.I still foolishly imagined that maybe he was like the guys in TV dramas, acting indifferent on purpose, but secretly preparing a surprise at home. However, when the lights turned on, there was nothing.Afterward, he apologized, saying he had forgotten it was my birthday. That was it. There was no makeup gift and no compensation.Back then,

That was when I saw it.In the video, Vivian was holding a bouquet, proposing.Amid the crowd chanting “I do!” Julian accepted the ring and flowers with a bright, satisfied smile.Back then, I once wanted a romantic proposal. He said it was embarrassing. He even told me that if I ever tried something like that, he wouldn’t marry me.In the end, I was the one who compromised. Now it seemed obvious that it was not that he did not want a public proposal. He just thought that I was not presentable enough. The moment the video spread, Julian immediately jumped into the group chat, furious.[Delete everything. Stop chatting here.]His outburst reminded everyone at once. There were so many people in the group that they had forgotten he was in it too. They had basically exposed everything right in his face.Everyone immediately fell silent.Julian then privately messaged me to explain.[Lydia, it’s not like what they said.][V

“Is a small hospital really good enough to treat it? Come with us and get another full check-up.”My father let out a sigh.“Let the child eat first. She’s been hungry all day.”My mother immediately clapped her hands.“Oh right, I’m getting things all mixed up. Let’s have dinner first. We’ll do the check-up after that.“Just look at you. You don’t even know how to take care of yourself. How did you lose so much weight?”Their care made my throat tighten, and tears fell before I could stop them.To my family, my safety came first. However, to Julian, everything else always came before me.The difference was obvious all along.I was just too blinded by love to notice the details. It was only now that I finally saw clearly.Still, it was not too late. After dinner, my parents immediately took me for a full-body check-up.Once they confirmed I was fine and only needed proper rest, they finally relaxed. The next day, Vivian’s father brought her to our home and knelt in front

“We were blind. Who knew she was just a gold digger?”“It’s no wonder she only accepted gifts and never gave anything back. She never treated anyone to meals either. She always made us pay.”“A real rich heiress should be like Ms. Lane, spending money without blinking.”The moment they saw me walk out, they immediately tried sucking up to me again.I laughed and shook my head.“Oh please. Didn’t you all say I wasn’t even worthy of comparing to one of Vivian’s toes? I couldn’t possibly deserve compliments from people like you.”Their expressions immediately turned awkward.Julian’s face paled as panic flashed across it.“How much did you hear?”…“From the moment you said I was poor and not worth celebrating a birthday for. Everything after that, I heard it all.“Funny, isn’t it? All these years, I actually believed your excuses. I thought you really were busy with work.“It turns out you just thought celebrating my birthday was a waste of money.”Still, how expensive could

The sheer amount of information hit Julian like a blow to the head. He stared at me in disbelief.“He’s your brother? You’re the heiress of the richest Lane family?”His friends could not accept it either. They immediately started panicking.“Wait, did we get it wrong? Isn’t Vivian your sister?”“Vivian, say something! Didn’t you say you were the only daughter of the Lane family?”“What? Does the Lane family have two daughters? Are you two actually sisters?”Their minds instantly spun up a full-blown wealthy-family drama. They began questioning whether Vivian was my half-sister.Otherwise, why would she not share the Lane family name?Even Vivian did not expect things to fall apart like this. She stared at me in shock, realizing I was the real Lane family heiress. For the past six months, she had been parading around in front of me as a rich heiress like a complete joke.Under the pressure of all the accusations, she stayed silent.Julian could immediately tell that she ha
