Six months later, life looked almost normal.

Layrus sat between two pillows on the living room rug, wobbling slightly as he tried to balance himself. His tiny fists smacked the floor in triumph, a loud, delighted babble spilling from his mouth.

"Da-da-da-da!"

Maya laughed from the couch, laptop open but forgotten. "You're not even saying it properly," she teased, crawling toward him.

The moment he saw her move, he squealed and lunged forward, collapsing dramatically into her arms.

  • Waiting in the shadows    Terms of War

The hospital room felt suffocatingly quiet.White walls. The slow rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor. The faint antiseptic smell lingering in the air. Everything about the room felt controlled except the people inside it.Sophie lay against the raised hospital bed, pale but very much alive, her fingers gripping the blanket tightly as though she were drawing strength from it.Across from her stood Maya and Lucas.Maya's arms were folded across her chest, her posture rigid, her face calm but her eyes sharp. Lucas stood slightly in front of her, as if instinctively placing himself between the two women.Sophie's gaze locked onto Maya. Then suddenly she laughed. Not a soft laugh.A bitter, hysterical one."So this is how it ends," she said hoarsely, her voice trembling with rage. "Maya Bennett standing here like some innocent saint."Her finger shot toward Maya."What did I ever do to you?" she screamed."You killed my baby!"The words slammed into the room like thunder.Lucas's jaw ti

  • Waiting in the shadows    Irreversible Consequences

The sterile white corridor outside the emergency ward felt colder than usual.Maya stood near the wall, her arms folded tightly across her chest, her mind still replaying the chaotic scene at the penthouse over and over again. The moment Sophie grabbed her.The pressure around her neck. The panic. And then the lamp. She had acted on instinct.Nothing more.Lucas stood a few steps away, leaning forward with both hands braced on his knees. His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles along his face kept flexing.Neither of them had spoken since the ambulance brought Sophie to the hospital.Inside the emergency room, doctors and nurses moved quickly behind the closed doors. Then the doors finally opened.Dr Anna stepped out.Her expression was grave. She removed her gloves slowly, then looked directly at Maya and Lucas."Which one of you is family?" she asked calmly.Lucas straightened immediately."I'm her husband."Dr Anna nodded once, her eyes briefly flicking toward Maya before r

  • Waiting in the shadows    The Trap

Sophie stared at her phone screen, her jaw tightening as she scrolled through another photograph of Layrus. The image had been posted by one of Maya's cousins after the small family gathering. It showed the baby laughing in Lucas's arms while relatives crowded around them, smiling.A perfect little family moment.Exactly the kind Sophie hatedHer fingers curled around the phone. For weeks she had watched it happen.Lucais is visiting more often.Lucais is asking about Layrus.Lucais is slowly drifting back into Maya's orbit. All because of that child. Her eyes darkened."So that's how you want to play this, Maya," she muttered to herself. If Layrus was the reason Lucas kept returning to Maya...Then Layrus would also be the reason everything collapsed.Sophie reached for another phone lying on the coffee table. The number dialled was already familiar."Doctor Anna," Sophie said coldly when the call connected. "I think it's time for the final phase."Across London, Maya was sitting in

  • Waiting in the shadows    Family Circles

The Bennett house had not been this lively in months. From the moment Maya stepped through the front door carrying Layrus, the familiar warmth of her parents' home wrapped around her like an embrace. Voices overlapped in cheerful chaos, laughter echoed through the hallways, and the rich aroma of roasted chicken, herbs, and freshly baked bread drifted from the kitchen."Look who finally arrived!" her aunt Mariana called out from the living room.Within seconds, three cousins appeared from different corners of the house, crowding around Maya before she could even remove her coat."Let me see him!" one of them said excitedly."Oh my God, he's gotten bigger!" another added.Layrus blinked sleepily in Maya's arms as hands reached toward him. His large, curious eyes wandered across the unfamiliar but lively room.Maya laughed softly."Careful," she warned playfully. "He just woke up."But it was already too late. Her cousin Daniel gently scooped Layrus from her arms like he had done it a hu

  • Waiting in the shadows    Confrontation

The rain had begun to fall lightly across London when Damien finally closed the folder in his hands. He had spent the entire morning digging quietly into the incident at the party. What Maya had told him the night before had not sat well with him. A woman does not simply walk into a locked room, take a baby, and wander around a crowded penthouse unless someone has instructed her to do so.And Damien trusted Maya's instincts. Now he had proof. The woman who had been caught with Layrus had been traced easily enough. Security footage from the building entrance had shown her arriving nearly thirty minutes before the party began. Not as a guest. She had been waiting.More importantly, the building's service corridor camera had captured something even more interesting.Sophie is speaking to her.Not long. Just enough to hand her something small.Money.Damien leaned back slowly in his chair. His jaw tightened."So it was you," he muttered under his breath. His first instinct was anger. But

  • Waiting in the shadows    The Cry of a Mother

The music in the penthouse continued to hum with laughter, clinking glasses, and congratulatory speeches. The celebration for the Thoreau app launch had grown louder as the night deepened. Guests mingled in small clusters, praising the success of the project and the remarkable statistics it had already begun generating.Maya tried to smile politely as people approached her with compliments about the launch, but her mind kept drifting upstairs.Layrus.She had taken him up earlier when the noise downstairs became too much. The little boy had fallen asleep almost instantly in the quiet of the guest bedroom. But now...A strange feeling tugged at her chest.A mother's instinct. Her breasts had begun to ache slightly, the familiar signal that Layrus might soon wake and need feeding.Excusing herself quietly from the group she was standing with, Maya made her way toward the staircase. The laughter from downstairs faded behind her as she climbed each step.Something about the silence upsta
