Chapter 22.

Ajax and Miranda were the last to arrive at the gathering.

Aaron had booked a private room at one of the city’s most renowned seafood restaurants for the occasion. Two large round tables filled the room, packed with friends catching up over drinks and the aroma of grilled fish and steamed crabs. The atmosphere was lively, full of laughter and clinking glasses. Ajax’s arrival, slightly delayed, became a minor climax of the evening.

Despite reminding Ajax to bring his wife, Aaron wasn’t particularly surprised to see him arrive alone. It had happened too many times before. He welcomed Ajax with a warm smile, patting his shoulder in greeting, then gestured toward an empty seat near the head of the table.

Chapter 24.On the other side of the city, Miranda couldn’t fall asleep. Her phone was still clutched in her hand, screen long dimmed, but she hadn’t moved. The soft glow of the bedside lamp painted shadows on the walls, but all she saw was the aftermath of a moment she couldn’t take back. Her fingers tightened around the cold device, knuckles white. She couldn’t understand why she had made that call. No, perhaps she did understand. It wasn’t the wine, though she had drained a glass too many. It was loneliness. It was the months of pent-up emotions she had carefully tucked away in the shadows of her heart. It was the unbearable sight of Ajax, the man she ha

  • Waking Up As the Villain's Mother   Chapter 23

Chapter 23.Could it be that Ajax kept a mistress?I knew it was irresponsible of me to think that, but what else was I supposed to assume when an unfamiliar number popped up on his screen late at night? I stared at his phone as it buzzed for the third time, the name “Miranda Mills” lighting up the screen. I bit the inside of my cheek, indecision warring with curiosity.Should I answer? After a moment’s hesitation, I did.A syrupy, coquettish voice responded on the other end, “Big brother Ajax, are you home?”

  • Waking Up As the Villain's Mother   Chapter 21

Chapter 21.During this period of time, Ajax always came home on time every night.Like clockwork. So I’d gotten used to the quiet routine of eating dinner with him and Dylan. That’s why I was caught off guard when Susan set the last dish on the table and casually mentioned, “Madam, Sir Ajax said he won’t be coming home to eat dinner tonight, so I only made four dishes.”I froze in surprise for a moment. My spoon was halfway to the rice cooker. “He’s not coming back?” I asked casually.Aunty nodded, unfa

Chapter 20.Even if others saw that Gwyneth had recently turned over a new leaf and was genuinely trying to become a good mother, Ajax Montclair didn’t dare raise his hopes.Habit was a terrifying thing. It entrenched itself like roots in dry earth—hard to dig out, harder still to ignore. And Ajax’s impression of Gwyneth had been shaped over four long years of cold shoulders, emotional distance, and polite indifference. The scars left behind by their hollow marriage didn’t vanish just because she had suddenly decided to smile more and pack lunchboxes. She said she wanted them to be a “plastic couple”—to maintain appearances for Dylan’s sake—but Ajax had drawn that line years ago, and he had no interest in repa

  • Waking Up As the Villain's Mother   Chapter 19

Chapter 19.The next morning, I stood by the window of our villa, watching the early sunlight pour across the lawn, golden and drowsy. Outside, the gardener was clipping hedges with a quiet rhythm, and the air smelled faintly of dew and roses. I had a glass of warm lemon water in hand and a strange, weightless feeling in my chest.I found myself thinking seriously about getting a job.Not because I wanted to—truthfully, I didn’t. My bank account had enough zeroes to fund a year-long trip around the world, first-class all the way. And that wasn’t even counting the properties under my name, the passive income from investments, or the platinum credit cards I barely touched. The original Gwyneth had been loaded, and now that wealth sat in my lap like an obedient cat.

  • Waking Up As the Villain's Mother   Chapter 18

Chapter 18.When Dylan finally woke up, it was already four in the afternoon. By that point, I had finished watching two horror movies, snacking my way through the afternoon like a true couch potato.I wasn’t proud of it—but I kind of was. It's a similar feeling from before, my whole life had revolved around working, day and night, until the pressure was ingrained in my mind and body.. That's why a small break could put me uneasy, a psychological shadow. But if that small break snowballs into a prolonged vacation, my body would naturally forget the tension but my mind would be uncomfortable, always looking for work and yet too lazy to work. This idle, do-nothing lifestyle was starting to grow on me in a dang

  • Waking Up As the Villain's Mother   Chapter 17

Chapter 17.Ajax stood up from his seat and said plainly, “I’ll be in the guestroom, I have some work to do.”Suppressing my laughter, I nodded. “Alright, enjoy your work.”He didn’t look back, but I saw the slight stiffness in his shoulders as he walked away—like someone trying very hard not to seem like they were fleeing the scene of a crime. Or, in this case, a mildly spooky movie.Once he disappeared behind the kitchen door, I let myself laugh for real. It wasn’t just about him flinching at a ghost—it was everything. The absurd normalcy of watching a man who I thought was too perfect to be human. Somewhat, it gave my curiosity some comfort that even though I'm living in this novel, people here are still human.Teasing him made me feel that he isn’t some kind of one-dimensional character.I stretched out on the couch, flipping the channel again until I landed back on the horror movie I was watching. The volume was low, the kind of background noise that made the silence feel less em

  • Waking Up As the Villain's Mother   Chapter 16

Chapter 16.After I changed into a nice outfit—a soft ivory blouse tucked into a pair of high-waisted linen trousers, paired with nude ballet flats and simple gold hoop earrings—I put on some light makeup: a bit of concealer, rose-tinted blush, and a glossy peach lip. It was enough to make me look fresh and put-together without trying too hard. Well if you're this pretty I guess it doesn’t matter.I spritzed on a subtle citrus perfume and headed downstairs, where the father and son duo were quietly sitting in the living room, each absorbed in their own world. Dylan was fiddling with a new toy car, and Ajax was checking his phone.I couldn’t lie that they look adorable, even in their own world they act the same.I tucked my hair behind one ear and asked casually, "Want me to drive, or do you want to drive?"Ajax blinked once, caught off guard. I supposed he still hadn’t fully processed the fact that I was joining today’s visit. But his face remained calm, composed. "You can drive," he
