My body curled on the floor, trembling as the tears streamed down my cheeks. Another kick met me in the stomach, and I rolled, wincing.
He took the opening to assault my ribs, and I was screaming helplessly, begging him to stop. I didn't know how much I could take anymore. My heart was constricting tightly; even my lungs were gradually closing up, restricting my airflow.
"Please stop... Please..." I sobbed, but my pleas fell on deaf ears. He wasn't going to stop. Nothing would make him stop until I was unconscious or possibly dead.
The next blow sent blood gushing out of my mouth.
"Pa..." I cried, "it hurts. It hurts."
I spat out more blood, and his feet connected to my face; the kick had my blood vessels bursting open. At least that is what it felt like.
"I am not your father!" He barked. "How many times do I have to warn you?"
He slammed his foot against my chest, pressing down so hard as if the intention was to crush my heart.
"Just how worthless can you be?!"
A knock suddenly interrupted my cries for pain and his curses, but he was stubborn. He didn't want to let go until I was limp.
However, the knobs became aggressive bangs, and before he could decide whether to leave me or not, it kicked open, slamming hard against the wall.
A group of hefty men stormed in and he immediately released me.
They all had a ruthless look to them, with different kinds of weapons hanging loosely in their hands.
The only man in a suit stepped forward, his dark, onyx eyes scanning between my father and me. It was the first time I had seen my father so terrified.
His face had already gone pale, and he looked like he would pass out if the man as much as blinked.
"Hello, Phillip. I don't mean to interrupt your fun, but I was passing by and decided to visit an old friend." The thick voice was accompanied by a pin-drop silence.
My father was visibly trembling. I wasn't sure how much longer his legs could hold him from the way he was panting heavily.
"Please, Axel, don't do this... I swear I'll pay you everything I owe. I just need a little more time, please." My father's knees dropped helplessly to the ground.
"Humph ...." The stranger pretended to be thoughtful for a minute. "While I do intend to leave here with my money, my men feel obligated to bless you." He drawled, and my father's body dropped completely on the floor.
"Please... I beg of you..." He pleaded desperately as the men stepped forward. Just like my pleas, his plea was ignored as they descended on him, hitting him with the thick pieces of wood and guns they carried. They kicked and punched him in every spot they could access.
It was almost satisfying to watch him suffer the same abuse he dished out to me. I raised my head slowly, wincing as I attempted to stand, but my body slumped back on the bed.
My eyes connected to those cold onyx eyes. His footsteps seemed to be louder than my father's cries for mercy as he approached me.
He took a squat to my level.
"What happened, little one? You want to beg for your father?" He asked.
"He... He..." My throat was dry and hurting as I tried to force the words out. "He is... not my father."
He was, biologically, but this man had treated me with nothing but contempt since my mother's death. He blamed me for every misfortune in his life when he was the one who gambled away his life savings and got fired because of his drinking habits.
He hated me, and frankly, I hated him too. My body was covered with scars and bruises because of him. Even the concealers were not able to hide it.
If he was not beating me, he was sexually assaulting me. At fourteen, I had seen more troubles than a fifty-year-old.
"Is that so?" He smirked.
I didn't know who this man was or why he had goons flocking around him, but I knew for sure that if anyone could protect me, it was him.
My father would never be able to come close to me with this man by my side.
"Please… Please take me with you." I sobbed. "I'll do anything you want... Just take me with you."
"Boss...." The men drew his attention. "The old hag gave out."
My eyes widened in panic as my brain processed the meaning of those words. My gaze shifted to my limp father, who had blood gushing out of him.
The stranger straightened and walked over to the body. He kicked my father over and dropped his foot on his chest. Then a sigh escaped his lips.
"You let the fool off easy!" he hissed, glaring at them. "Who is going to pay me now?"
My heart drummed heavily against my chest as I stared at his limp body.
My father was gone! Dead! Not breathing!
Tears poured down my cheeks.
I hated myself for caring about his life when he had done nothing but make my life miserable. He was nothing but a beast and deserved the painful death he got, yet my heart kept aching for him.
I couldn't shake off the feeling of loss, no matter how hard I tried.
The stranger walked to me once again.
"Do you knowwhere your father keeps his savings?" He asked, but I was too shaken to give a response.
My eyes were still fixed on the corpse, waiting for him to stir. Hoping he would open his eyes.
But none of that happened.
When he noticed I wasn't going to give him a response, he turned to his men.
"Comb every corner of the house and bring every piece of cash you can find," he ordered.
"You won't find it..." I didn't even realize when the words left my mouth. "My father was a drunk and gambler; he had no savings."
"Boss, we have to confirm..."
"There is no need; I believe her. He, after all, left a huge pile of debt in my casino." He cut them short, squatting to me once again.
He lifted my battered face with a finger and nodded in approval. He signaled the men to help me stand and took a critical look at me.
"Since you are the only thing of value your father has, you will work to pay off his debt."
‘’Who are you?’’Lucas Conti. I smiled. Who would have thought I would meet one of the world’s billionaires and a rumored womaniser today. It was such a shame that I was smelling like sardine, but I could still do something with what I had.I dropped the photo in my hand and walked towards him, slowly and seductively. I stretched my hands towards him.‘’Grace Miller. I’m waiting for the manager.’’He took my hands and I held his eyes. Seducing men was not something that needed the right time if one was an expert. I rubbed my finger on his hand and I made the handshake linger for just the right amount of time.‘’Grace,’’ he said, the tone of his voice dropping to familiar levels. ‘’Are you a guest in our hotel?’‘’Well,’’ I said. ‘’I could be your guest.’’His face broke into a smile. I had him charmed. The manager stepped in just then. Wrong timing. I mean, he could have remained lost in his quest for water.‘’Good afternoon, sir,’’ he stammered. ‘’I wasn’t aware you were aro
I closed my eyes as we moved farther and farther away from the mansion. The roaring sound of the motor bikes did not help the turmoil I felt inside. I was leaving everything I had worked so hard for in the last few years. But i was not accepting defeat yet. I would be back.I will come back for my son. For what is mine and give everyone what is due.Diego had succeeded in killing most of the men that were loyal to me, and even as I sat on the bike clutching myself, I wasn't sure who was for me anymore. It was a big risk I was taking and I hoped it would be worth it all. For the sake of those who had died on the path to my ambition. For Lorenz’s sake.I reach for my thigh, tapping it. The pressure of the knife against my skin reminded me that I was not unarmed. We were leaving the city. I was being taken to a neighbouring town a few hours from Palmero. There I would stay under the radar, until Diego was gotten rid of. I would also try to make the necessary liaison with all the
My phone was buzzing in my pocket continuously. I had placed it on DND, so the call had to have been persistent for it to be vibrating in my pocket. I glanced at the large screen and then at Lucas who was seated on the seat just beside the investors. He smiled encouragingly at me. Today was the big day. The day I presented our beautiful project. He said it was just for formalities. The people who mattered had seen the presentation privately and they loved it. I was still nervous though and the continuous vibrations in my pocket were compounding it.The presentation was over in twenty minutes. The smiles on their faces and the warm and firm handshakes told me all I needed to know.Lucas slapped my shoulders warmly. ‘’You did good. I was impressed. This calls for some wine.’’We were going to get featured on the front pages of the business papers and on the headlines of the business news. It was finally an opportunity to prove to Nile and my father that I could make a meaningfu
Before I could scream, I heard hurried footsteps approaching the room and the door flung open instantly.‘’It’s urgent,’’ the first man said. I could see what he couldn’t say in his eyes.I pointed at the monitor. ‘’Get the doctor here fast.’’Two of them hurried out of the room. ‘’The doctor is trying to save your father,’’ the first man said.‘’Save? What happened?’’‘’He went into cardiac arrest.’’I felt blood seeping out of my head and I swooned. He caught me just in time. The nurse was arriving as I was being held.‘’The monitor,’’ I said to her. She hurried to his side, and I was ushered out of the room. That feeling of desolation overpowered me once again. I had not felt that since I left Axel’s whore house, but now I was at the brink of losing everything I cherished. When I got to father’s room, I stood outside observing through the door as the doctor tried to revive his heart with the defibrillator. I clenched my hand into a fist. What had gone wrong? Someone had
I watched her face turn pale as she read the report in her hand. ‘’Is this real?’’ She looked up at me.I nodded. ‘’I don’t think he knows.’’A sad smile spread on her face. ‘’What a horrible way to finally find your brother, Octavia. I mean, we all thought he died in the fire. Same way we thought you did.’’There was a knock on the door and we quickly put the document away. ‘’Come in,’’ aunt Elena said. I had been sleeping in her room since the incident the previous day.A maid walked in. “Good morning, ma’am,’’ she said. ‘’Did you sleep well?’’‘’I did.’’It was the maid who looked after her room. ‘’I came to ask if you needed anything this morning, ma’am.’’‘’Not at all,’’ she responded.‘’Coffee?’’‘’That’s fine.’’I waited until she was gone for a minute before I spoke. ‘’We can’t trust any of the new staff right now. They were all employed by Rory, and we don’t know who is with her or not.’’‘’Rory needs to be arrested, and made to confess.’’I nodded in agreement. W
She didn’t budge. She remained calm and determined. ‘’You are trying to save the life of a man that should have been killed on the spot. How wicked can one be?’’‘’We need to find out who he’s working with,’’ she said. ‘’Until then, no one touches him. His punishment is at my disposal.’’She walked away and I bit my lips. The plan was crashing. Sylvester had shot the wrong person, Octavia was still alive and she had my necklace. Now, Sylvester was going to be tortured until he confessed. I wondered how strong he would be. I had to do something.I found Mikel in his office. He was startled to see me. I could tell he was expecting me. He had that look in his face.‘’I’m in trouble, Mikel,’’ I said. ‘’I need your help.’’He glared at me. ‘’What were you thinking? We had a plan. A good one. You abandoned it for some no good riff raff.’’‘’Mikel..’’‘’I know you were sleeping with him,’’ he said, anger attempting to boil over the surface. ‘’I can’t help you right now.’’I moved f
