Inside the building was worse than the yard. The walls were stained with something Raven chose not to identify. And the smell—that faint, sweet-rotten smell that clung to the back of her throat—was stronger here. Real. Constant.

The Matron led them turned onto a dark corridor. James was front, and he pulled himself to a halt at the sight in the corridor, so did everyone after him, at the creepy view in front of them--

With rooms on each side of the building blocking the little sunlight this world had, the corridor was ever so dim with the few light bulbs over their heads barely glowing.

But it was the children that scared them.

The children from the yard had gathered here already, standing stiff in the dark corridor, one beside each door. Six blank faces turned slowly toward the players.

The matron didn't seem to notice a thing. She walked on with that fake warm smile and assigned each player to a room—each with a child standing beside it.

"You three here. You three there. And you—" After assigning the players, the matron held Raven by both her shoulders from behind, forcing her to look ahead at the dark end of the corridor where a single door stood with no child beside it, "You get the nursery, closest to Mama Matron’s room, so she could attend to you at night as soon as you cried, little one!"

Raven smiled innocently at the matron’s greedily glowing eyes, “Thanks, Mama Matron!”

“I’m sure you are all tired. Go ahead, get some good rest in your rooms.” The matron smiles at them, “Play nice with your roommates. A naughty child is not welcome here. Tomorrow, you can start helping out in the yard.”

The game was too real. The time passed normally. The cold bit her skin, the floor creaked under her feet, the smell never left. This wasn't a game module. This was a place. A piece of reality cut out and stitched into whatever this was.

James was right -- he indicated that the games might be part of the real world. James wasn’t sure, but Raven was--

The moment the game loaded, Raven recognized the orphanage -- though with its style adapted to victoria London with a few small touches here and there, it was very much the orphanage Raven grew up in.

Raven thought it was because the game extracted her own memory to render the game’s background, but it was obviously not the case after James and others appeared -- it wouldn’t be fair if the system chose the memory from one player when it was a multiplayer game.

So, the system chose this orphanage for some other reason, and Raven just happened to know the place.

“Go on,” The matron urges when no players moved, “Go ahead, you poor little things. It’s bed time now.”

Four out of seven players were new to the game, a game sealed by fog that cut people. And five minutes into the game, the game world boss assigned each of them a room with a roommate that looked more dead than alive.

Nobody wanted to move.

At this moment, even Rose, a cold, cranky mean girl, looked like a better companion than the new “roommates”.

“Alright, let’s get inside first. Gather any and every piece of information you can,” James said, naturally taking the role of leader.

“I hope I don’t need to tell you how dangerous this game is,” James glanced in Raven and Aaron’s direction, “Rose and I are veterans. We'll help you as much as we can, but you need to pull your own weight, too. Cooperation is our best shot at survival.”

Raven walked Aaron to his room first -- only because Aaron wouldn’t let her go.

Aaron’s roommate was a thin boy, around five years old. His head looked too big for that tiny neck and slim limbs. It looked empty under that dirty unfitting shirt, but Raven didn’t think it was wise to check.

He looked up at Aaron with those huge dark eyes. His face was blank and numb, but somehow Aaron read hunger in those pupils, and a shiver ran down his spine.

Instantly, Aaron grabbed Raven with pitiful eyes, “I-I’m a banker in real life! Please, you seem to know your way in the game. You are the cool girl type! Can I stay with you? I’ll make it worth your while once we get out of the game!”

Aaron was genuinely scared out of his wits.

Raven did have questions for Aaron, but she was more of a lone wolf. She never had any partners in games, not even with Darren.

“I’m new to this game, too,” Raven declined subtly with an apologetic smile, “I can’t carry you, so I won’t give you false hope.”

Her genuine act worked too well--

“It’s okay! I’ll be useful, I promise!” Aaron shook his head frantically, “You are the only good soul in this team, I know! I know how to read people!”

Raven dead pan. Did your reading not tell you you are grabbing on to the only sociopath in the team?

Raven jumped in.One, the door wasn’t locked this time, but there was no guarantee that it would still be when she come back. And two--The nap time after lunch had no regular check up. If the game needed the nurses to make sure the players were in the rooms, then...this time might be exploring time for the players, just disguised by the rules as if it was forbidden time to stay out.Raven wanted to know which was the case. The tunnel was pitch dark.Even pulling up the system cast no light -- it was like the system existed in some other universe, and wasn’t interacting with this one at all.Raven clicked her tongue -- without sight, she could miss hints in here. But if she wanted to see--[Token: Perpetual Lamp][A sleeping god always needs something to watch over him. What better to decorate his tomb than a little lamp that neither shines nor goes out? It doesn't light up at all, but hey—he's dead anyway. It's not like he really needs a light source, right? Sure, it's a bit expensiv

  • Wanted My Life, Settled For My Body   029 Kitchen's Secret

Raven found a piece of gauze rather easily. The kitchen looked as normal as it could get. No dead bodies hanging from the window like Raven imagined. No bloody human limbs lying around, either. It was almost like Raven just took a wrong turn in a normal resturant, and ended up where meals were made only a moment ago.Mr. Bore was not in the kitchen. The players could walk around and touch anything they want. Even their chore was more than ordinary:Dishes.More than a dozen plates and their silver covers. Not easy, but far from undoable.Lesson learned from yesterday, Raven and Annie got on the dishes first thing. Dolly and Annie’s roommate Lily were also very motivated. The dishes was done within minutes. After that, Dolly left the kitchen, and Lily remained for small chores such as cleaning the stove -- which was not included in Raven’s chore list.Done.It was almost like--The game wanted the players to leave the kitchen. ASAP.Like hell Raven would.Rose indicated that she search

  • Wanted My Life, Settled For My Body   028 Norman's Heart

James was genuinely shocked when he saw Annie walking out on her own--One food normal, the other see through.James wasn’t surprised by Annie getting back on her feet -- but at the fact that someone purchased such a useless item just to help another.[Phantom Limb] was one of the cheapest items -- in a game where death was common, losing limbs was even more so. But obviously the game didn’t want players to die too fast, so it designed this card, to prolong the suffering of the players by offering fake hope.Sometimes, hope could be more tormenting.“Half of your reward, for another to survive 3 more days,” James whispered to Raven when she passed him, “Is it really worth it?”Raven gave him a perfect friendly smile: “Whether a deal’s a good one is for the buyer to decide. Who knows? Maybe one day you’ll want to trade with me too.”James was fully expecting Raven to be hostile to him by now -- now that his true color was revealed. But he was yet again surprised. His cold scheming natu

  • Wanted My Life, Settled For My Body   027 Rumpelstiltskin’s Contract

The worried look on James’s face faded into a cold, indifferent mask.No point faking anymore -- Vera wasn’t cast out, Aaron and Annie would never trust him again, and Raven...James took a deep breath. He had to admit, he was wrong about Raven. He rarely trust the wrong person, but she looked too harmless from the beginning. She never trusted him, yet she found great excuses every time she sabotaged his plan.Even just now when Raven basically pointed out Rose’s trick, but she did it as if it was an innocent accident.Tsk. Rose clicked her tongue, “I shouldn’t have tried to fake it. What a waste.” She pulled out a gauze and wrapped it around her arm.Raven’s eyes moved -- Rose found a piece, too.10 pieces of the hidden item. If lucky, the game would have more than 10 pieces lying around, but Raven dared not count on it.The relic of a god, how many pieces could there be?The most likely case? There was only ten pieces to collect, and once they left this game world, it would be over.

  • Wanted My Life, Settled For My Body   026 No Turning Back

Surprisingly, it was a safe night--Well, more or less.No one died during the previous night. Rose, James, Vera, Aaron and Annie. They were all there, well, Annie wasn’t “all” there--She was missing a hand and a foot. And she was the who who just screamed.“What happened?!” James demanded in haste, but Annie could barely talkShe crawled out of her room for help, and was now melted on the floor, covered in blood and tears.“I-I woke up this way...” Annie sobbed, “Help, please...help me! It hurt so badly...!”“Here, take this!” James pulled something out of his pocket --The same gauze Ta-mew showed Raven last night.Annie grabbed it from James, but her one remaining hand was shaking frantically at the pain, and she couldn’t do anything with it.Vera watched with cold eyes, apparently with no intention to help.Raven walked up and helped Annie--She wanted to confirm whether it was the hidden item, and surely enough, Raven got the system’s notification when she touched the gauze.Sur

  • Wanted My Life, Settled For My Body   025 Outside The Door

For a locked room, this one was really disappointing -- Raven went through the room inch by inch, and all she found was three items:This side quest -- one that didn’t even promise any gold to help the main quest, a “delivering schedule”, and a basket of cookies. The delivering schedule was a bunch of dates and numbers. Probably important information, but no where to use right now.The cookies were great, but only one was allowed to be put into her system backpack. Suspecting that means only one was allowed to take, Raven left the rest of the cookies untouched.Put the cookie away, Raven ate her chocolate bar instead -- safer this way, because she couldn’t put the chocolate bar in her backpack. Enjoying her first meal in the game leisurely, Raven started reading the letters.[Dear Dalia,[Seeing you everyday, but still, I miss you. Have you thought about my proposal? I understand your struggle, I really do. Our heart are connected, remember? I share your sorrow, your happiness, and of
