ログインLater that evening, Anabel showed up at my apartment on her way back from work. She was holding a fancy envelope and grinning as if she'd just won the lottery.
"What's that?" I asked, letting her in.
"The invitation to my brother's welcome party," she said, passing it to me. "You're coming, right?"
I looked at the envelope briefly. It was elegant and expensive-looking. "Of course," I said "When is it?"
"Next weekend. It's going to be at our family house. The one we used for my last birthday. My parents are going all out."
"That's nice," I said, setting the invitation on the table.
Anabel sat on my couch, dropping her bag on my table studying me like she always did when she sensed something was off. "Okay, Lin.…..spill."
"Spill what?" I asked surprisingly, already knowing where this was going.
"The guy from the bar. The one who sent you breakfast,”she narrowed her eyes playfully "You are glowing, Lin. You look happier. What has the mystery guy done to my friend?"
I sat down beside her, trying to hide my smile. "It's nothing." I tried to look away.
"That's a lie, I know you Lin" she said, poking my arm. "Come on. Tell me everything."
Anabel wasn't going to give up. There's no escaping her.
I sighed. "Okay, fine. We've been talking. And we had lunch today."
Her eyes went wide, and she sat up properly facing me directly with her two legs crossed neatly. "Lunch? Like….a date?"
"I guess," I replied casually like it was no big deal.
"Lin!" she squealed, grabbing my hands. "This is huge! You never do this!"
"I know," I said, laughing. "But I don't know if I should let him in."
"Hmm… You like him" she said not asking.
I nodded slowly. "Yeah. He's… different. He listens to me. He's patient. He makes me feel like I matter."
Anabel's face softened. "You deserve that, Lin. You deserve someone who sees how amazing you are."
"I'm just scared," I admitted. "What if it doesn't work out? What if I get hurt again?"
"Then you get hurt," she said gently. "But at least you tried. You let yourself feel something again which is not bad. You can't protect your heart forever, Lin. Sometimes you have to take the risk." she said softly holding my hand.
I looked at my best friend, the only person who knew me better than anyone. "When did you get so wise?"
She grinned. "I've always been wise. You just don't listen."
I laughed, and for the first time in a long time, I felt hopeful. Maybe Anabel was right. Maybe it was time to take the risk.
Later that night, after Anabel left, I texted Ethan.
[Me: Thank you for today. I had a really good time.]
His reply came almost immediately.
[Ethan: I had a great time too and I’m glad you gave me a chance.]
I set my phone down and looked at the invitation sitting on my table. Anabel's brother's welcome party. I wondered what he was like. If he were anything like Anabel, he was probably loud, funny, and full of life.
I had no idea that in just a few days, my entire world would change.
A few days after our lunch date, Ethan called me.
"I want to see you again," he said.
I smiled, holding the phone closer. "We just saw each other."
"That was days ago. I miss you, Linda"
My heart did that stupid flutter thing again.
"Can you come over to my place tomorrow. I'll cook dinner."
I paused. Going to his place felt like a big step. Like crossing a line I couldn't uncross. I almost said no.
"Ethan…"I said softly. But he responded before I could continue.
"Just dinner, Linda. I promise I'll behave."
I laughed. "Okay…..Fine. But if the food is terrible, I'm leaving."
"Deal. I will send my driver to pick you up tomorrow"
"Alright"
The next evening I arrived at his apartment building. My heart was racing. I wore a simple blue gown that wasn't screaming I’m trying too hard. Nothing too fancy. I texted him.
[Me: I’m here.]
[Ethan: Come up. Penthouse floor]
I took the elevator up, I was nervous. When the door opened Ethan was standing there, waiting for me. He was wearing a casual shirt and jeans, his hair slightly messy, and he still looked so good.
"You came," he said, smiling.
"Yes, I did. You invited me," I replied smiling back.
He stepped aside, letting me in. His apartment was beautiful. Modern, clean, with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the city. The kind of home that reflected someone who valued peace. It felt like him.
"This is nice," I said, looking around.
"Thank you Linda. Please, make yourself comfortable. Dinner's almost ready."
I sat on the couch while he went to the kitchen. A few minutes later, he came with two plates of pasta setting it on the table with a bottle of wine and two wine glasses.
"You actually cooked," I said, surprised.
"I told you I would," he said inviting me to the table pulling my chair for me to sit. "Try it," he said sitting beside me.
I took a bite, and my eyes widened. "This is really good."
He smiled. "I told you I’m good at many things."
I was surprised he could cook such a delicious meal. I asked myself in my head "What is Ethan Hayes not good at?" “Nothing”. Honestly, Ethan’s ticked every box for me. He's everything I want in a man and more but I kept my cool. He's not running away as he said. I have all the time to fall for him. We ate and talked, and it felt easy. Natural. Like we'd been doing this for years.
"So," he said, leaning back. "Tell me about your family."
I hesitated. I didn't talk about my family much. "There's nothing much to tell. I’m an only child. My parents are great and supportive. They didn't understand the whole fashion thing at first, but they came around."
"That's really good," he said. "Family support matters."
"What about you?" I asked sipping my wine.
"I told you I’m helping with the family business. My parents are retiring soon. I have a younger sister and she has no interest in working in the company and I’m the only son. Someone has to take responsibility."
"Hmm…..your sister must be a tough one," I said smiling.
"No….on the contrary. She's very cool. Although she can be a lot, she's loving. She's always in my business"
He laughed, pulling out his phone."You’d probably like her."
He turned the screen toward me.
“This is her.”
I glanced at the phone. And my world stopped, I froze. My fork slipped from my fingers and fell onto the plate.
It was Anabel. My Anabel. My best friend. I stared at the screen telling myself this couldn't be real. This can’t be happening. My chest tightened. The room suddenly felt too small. Too hot. I reached for my glass of wine and gulped down the wine left, but it went down the wrong way. I started coughing, my eyes watering.
“Linda?” Ethan said, his voice filled with concern. He reached over, rubbing my back. "Are you okay?"
I nodded, still coughing, trying to catch my breath. "I'm fine. I just… I need to go."
"What? Why?" he asked confused.
I stood up quickly, grabbing my bag. "I'm sorry. I just remembered I have something to do."
"Linda, wait….."
"Thank you for dinner," I said, not looking at him. "I’m sorry I have to go."
I didn't wait for him to respond. I just left.
Chapter 54. For a moment, I stood there staring at the spot where Anabel had disappeared into the crowd. The music was still playing and people were still laughing. The reunion continued around me as if nothing had happened. But I didn’t want to be there anymore. I adjusted my bag on my shoulder and headed out. The cool night air hit my skin the moment I stepped outside and I immediately felt relieved. The city lights stretched across the street beyond the venue. Valet attendants moved back and forth while guests arrived and left in expensive cars. I walked toward the parking area, already thinking about getting home. Maybe Maya had been right about attending or maybe she had been completely wrong. At least now I knew where I stood with Anabel and the thought hurt more than I wanted to admit. My heels clicked against the pavement as I walked. The city was doing what New York always did at this hour, alive and indifferent all at once, taxis cutting through intersections, a distant sir
The venue was elegant and modern. It looked effortlessly stylish without trying too hard. It had a large glass entrance with warm lights and a valet attendant. Guests were dressed in shades of burgundy, from elegant designer dresses to perfectly tailored suits. They were gathered around tall tables with drinks in hand. I took a deep breath, then another, and finally stepped inside. The setting made everything feel slightly more cinematic than it actually was. The ballroom buzzed with conversation and music drifted softly through the room. People laughed, groups formed and reformed. Old classmates were recognizing each other after years apart. For a moment, I simply stood there taking it all in. I collected a glass of wine from the bar near the entrance and took a moment to scan the room the way I always did in social gatherings. I did it quietly, without making it look like that's what I was doing. Some I recognized immediately, some only after a few seconds. Names came back slowly, a
Chapter 52.By the time I got home that evening, Maya’s words were still sitting in the back of my mind. I hated how much sense she made. I dropped my bag on the kitchen counter and kicked off my shoes before making myself a cup of tea. The reunion notification was still sitting on my phone exactly where I had left it ignored and waiting. I stared at it again for almost a full minute before opening it. I clicked on the registration link and the page loaded immediately. My finger hovered over the screen because a part of me still wanted to avoid the entire thing. And it wasn't because of the event itself, it was because of Anabel. Every memory attached to that reunion somehow included her.The jokes, the plans, and the promises we had made about it all felt impossible without her. But Maya wasn’t wrong, the people attending weren’t just former classmates anymore. They were business owners, investors, executives, creatives, and professionals spread across industries I wanted StyledByLin
Chapter 51. The next morning started normally. I was halfway through reviewing production schedules when Maya walked into my office carrying her tablet. She closed the door behind her and sat down without her usual greeting. That immediately made me suspicious."I’ve been thinking about something." I sighed. "That sentence never leads anywhere good."Maya ignored me. "Do we have a backup plan if Chloe decides to make things difficult closer to the exhibition?"I blinked. "You want us to replace Chloe? And why would she make things difficult?""Because she’s unpredictable and I want us to be prepared.""Maya…""I’m serious, Lin." She cut in. "You need to think about that,"I leaned back in my chair. "You are overthinking it. And even if Chloe wanted to pull out, she can’t."Maya folded her arms. "You sound very confident about that. How are you so sure?”"Because…" I pointed toward the contract folder sitting on my desk. "Model Luxe signed a binding agreement. If they pull their mod
"I know I should have ended things properly…" His jaw tightened. "And that’s the part I’ll always own."I watched him carefully without interrupting."Leaving was the right decision for me," he continued. "But disappearing without giving her the closure she deserved wasn’t right either."His fingers tapped lightly against the side of his cup. "I was angry, hurt, and exhausted. And honestly, I wanted as much distance between us as possible."He looked up at me again. "But if there’s one thing I would change, it’s how I handled the ending."I looked at him quietly and for the first time since Chloe sat across from me that morning, the story sounded whole."So even after what she did, you stayed longer than you wanted because of guilt?""Yes."I looked down briefly."But, why didn't you tell me any of this part before?" I asked."Because it was in the past and I hate talking about her," his answer came quickly."That relationship nearly broke me and I didn't want us to begin with me hand
Throughout the entire walk back from the café, Chloe’s words stayed inside my head like a background noise I couldn’t switch off. I hated that she had succeeded in doing exactly what I promised myself I wouldn’t let her do. By the time I got back to the studio, I wasn’t thinking clearly anymore. I was just unsettled. Maya looked up the moment I walked in and followed me into my office."Did you meet her? How was it?" Maya asked.I sat down and dropped my bag on my desk. I let out a long breath before answering."It was…" I paused, "a lot."Maya frowned and pulled out the chair opposite me. "What did she say?"I hesitated because saying it out loud somehow made it feel more real."She said Ethan left her when things got hard," I said finally. "That he relocated while she was grieving her dad. And he has a habit of walking away when life becomes too much."Maya’s expression didn’t change immediately. "And?""And that’s it.""That’s it?" she repeated.I nodded."I’m only worried because
I left work early to come home and clear my head. I just finished dinner and was about to upload some pictures of my new collections to my fashion page.It was around 8 pm when someone knocked on my apartment door. I wasn't expecting anyone. Maya had gone home hours ago, and Anabel was busy with th
I almost didn't go.I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone. I was already dressed in a beautiful emerald green dress that hugged my body perfectly. My makeup was flawless, my hair was styled, and I looked stunning. But inside, I felt like I was falling apart. I was having cold feet.I did
I barely slept that night after Maya left. I kept thinking about what Maya said about the party. The party is in two days. Just two more days, and I'd have to face both Ethan and Anabel in the same room. How was I supposed to do that? My mind kept running through different versions of what to do at
I reached for a glass of wine from a passing server and took a long sip, to give my hands something to do and to calm my nerves down."So… you came, " a voice said softly behind me.I turned slightly and saw Ethan standing next to me. My heart raced. I opened my mouth to respond, but the words woul
