Chapter 2

Author: Nancy South
After the spectacle ended, the people inside the old castle dispersed. No one remembered that Dad and I were still inside. Our corpses remained kneeling inside the grand hall, though our souls were already gone.

A few days later, a foul, putrid odor drifted out and caught a security guard's attention.

"What's that smell? Did the trash bin leak?" he muttered.

He followed the smell, his flashlight trembling as his steps grew slower. The moment he pushed open the doors to the grand hall, the gruesome sight before him sent him stumbling backward in terror.

Our corpses had become unbearable to look at. Our faces were a dark purplish blue, dried blood caked at the corners of our mouths, and our bodies were stiff and ice-cold.

"Captain, something's wrong! Something terrible has happened!" the guard shouted.

The police arrived soon afterward. Red and blue lights flashed across the stone walls of the old castle, casting them in alternating brightness and darkness.

An officer crouched to examine Dad's and my faces, then said quietly, "Based on the initial assessment, this was likely caused by severe physical abuse."

They found a wooden tag hidden in an inner pocket of my clothing. Carved into it were the words, "Oscar Howard, of Glenford, Ashvale".

It was my identification tag. I had made it because I was afraid that if I stayed in that world too long, I might one day forget Abigail.

Using the phone number on the tag, the officer called Abigail. "Is this Ms. Finch?"

At that moment, Joel was trying on a wedding tuxedo in front of the mirror while Abigail stood beside him, her gaze full of affection.

The officer said, "We've found the bodies of your husband, Oscar Howard, and your father-in-law, Cameron Howard. We need you to—"

Before he could finish, Abigail scoffed, her voice full of contempt. "Oscar really went all out. How much did he pay you to pull off this act? He even cursed his own father to death for this stunt. Does he seriously think this is funny?"

Without waiting for the officer to reply, Abigail hung up.

Joel frowned and walked over to Abigail. "Abby, should we maybe put the wedding on hold? Oscar wouldn't go so far as to make up something like this, right?"

Mom approached them and said confidently, "Cameron just used my supplementary card to spend 20 thousand dollars on a meal. How could anything have happened to him?"

Joel then took out his phone and pulled up Instagram. On the screen was a photo of Dad and me at the beach. The caption read, "Staying away from toxic people and spending the rest of our days healing."

The photo was clearly AI-generated, but they all fell for it without question. I hurriedly tried to speak up, but no one could hear me.

Abigail turned and stood on her toes to kiss Joel on the cheek, her voice soft but leaving no room for argument. "Stop overthinking. I promised you I'd give you a perfect wedding before your stomach cancer gets worse."

Joel pulled her tightly into his arms, a flicker of satisfaction crossing his expression.

The following day, the funeral home called Mom. "Hello, this is the city funeral home. We're calling regarding the cremation of your husband and son's remains. We need you to come in and sign the paperwork—"

Mom immediately flew into a rage and shouted into the phone, "How dare you try to scam me? What's next? Are you going to mail me an urn?"

She was so furious that she turned off her phone right away.

Abigail sat across from her, pausing with her coffee cup in hand. "Mom, should we… perhaps go check it out?"

Mom slammed her hand on the table. "Check what? Isn't it obvious? Just because I agreed to appear as Joel's mother at the wedding, Oscar and Cameron deliberately pulled this stunt to make us give in. Not a chance!"

Abigail fell silent for a moment before nodding. "You're right. Once the wedding is over, everything will go back to normal."

I drifted beside them, a hollow emptiness settling in my chest. It turned out that in their eyes, my grievances and sorrow had never even mattered.

I floated in midair and quietly looked down at everything below. The wicked had finally received their punishment, but Dad and I could never come back. After Joel was taken to the punishment chamber, he didn't last long before losing his mind completely. He was chained in a dark corner, his clothing in tatters, his festering skin stuck to the filthy fabric. He was incoherent and delirious all day, muttering the same words over and over. He giggled at times and choked up at others. "I transmigrated… I just need to find a way back… I want to go back to the modern world…"He buried himself in his delusions, trying to numb his mind with his obsession over the modern world, but the guards never showed him even a trace of mercy. Whenever he lost himself in those fantasies and laughed quietly to himself, they would dump a bucket of ice-cold water straight over his head without hesitation. The freezing water soaked through his ruined clothes, making his body stiffen and tremble as it inst

When Joel opened his eyes again, a piercing coldness swept through his entire body. What he saw wasn't the luxurious villa or soft bed he knew so well, but a ruined and damp woodshed. The walls were mottled and blackened, and moldy hay was piled up in the corners. Freezing wind poured in through the gaps in the broken wooden windows, making him shiver uncontrollably.Just as he tried to push himself up and figure out where he was, a foot suddenly shot out from the shadows and kicked him hard in the shoulder.A harsh, commanding voice rang out. "Behave yourself! Kneel and receive the royal decree!"The leading chamberlain wore a dark embroidered uniform. His complexion was sallow, and his features were sharp and unkind. He looked down contemptuously at Joel, who was sprawled on the ground, and Kenneth, who was trembling beside him.His voice was shrill and mocking, every word laced with icy contempt. "Joel Ingram and Kenneth Ingram are base in character and malicious in intent."A

Inside the deathly silent morgue, the air was bone-chilling.Abigail slowly stood up. The bright red handprint on her cheek remained painfully obvious. She numbly took out her phone and called her secretary, her voice utterly cold. "Investigate everything Oscar went through these past three years. I want every single detail. Don't leave out anything."I hovered nearby and watched her indifferently. I knew this belated investigation was far too late and meant absolutely nothing now.As soon as the call ended, soft footsteps echoed through the room as Joel slowly walked in. His eyes were red-rimmed as he deliberately forced out a weak and sorrowful expression. He choked up. "Oscar, how could you do something like this? Abby already planned to bring you and Mr. Howard home after the wedding. Why couldn't you two hold on a little longer?"After he finished speaking, he carefully glanced at Abigail, who stood silently beside him, and gently comforted her. "Abby, this is fate. No one

Nobody cared about the wedding anymore. The guests scattered in every direction.Abigail violently tore off the long train of her wedding gown and rushed outside like a madwoman, ignoring everyone trying to stop her. Mom's legs threatened to give out, but she still stumbled after Abigail. The two of them ran all the way toward the cold and silent morgue.A chill seeped through the gap beneath the morgue door, heavy and suffocating. The air was cold enough to make breathing difficult, thick with the smell of disinfectant mixed with decay. Two staff members wheeled in a pair of gurneys. White sheets tightly covered Dad's and my bodies, outlining our thin, rigid frames.Mom breathed heavily, clenching her hands. Abigail stiffened, her chest heaving. Her eyes, once always icy and arrogant, were now frantic, unable to settle on anything. Both of them trembled as they reached out together and slowly pulled back the white sheets. The moment the sheets fell away, silence spread through

Abigail's expression suddenly changed, and she spoke in a stubborn, cold tone. "That's impossible. What are you talking about?"She instinctively denied it as a trace of panic flashed through her eyes. Then, as though something had occurred to her, her face quickly settled back into its cold, mocking expression. She snatched the photos from the officer's hands and violently tore them to pieces in front of everyone. Tiny scraps of paper drifted down onto the smooth red carpet.A cold laugh escaped her lips. "Oscar really went to great lengths just to sabotage my wedding," she said, her voice biting and dismissive. "He and his dad are obviously vacationing at the beach. Do you think I'm stupid?"Mom suddenly let go of Kenneth's hand, her face turning livid. She shouted, "You must be scammers trying to ruin the wedding on purpose! Get out of here right now—"The officer's expression remained unchanged. He held up his badge and credentials, his voice firm and measured. "Ms. Elisha Swe

Another two weeks passed, and Abigail's patience had completely worn thin. To suppress the irritation inside her, she threw all her energy into preparing the wedding with Joel. She scouted venues, picked out gowns, and finalized schedules, keeping herself constantly occupied.Still, whenever she stopped and looked around the empty, quiet house, a strange sense of emptiness would flicker in her eyes.Every time that happened, Joel would move closer and cup her face in his hands while comforting her. "Abby, stop thinking about it. Oscar is just throwing a tantrum. Once our wedding is over, he'll definitely come back."Abigail listened quietly, pushing down the unease inside her and trying to reassure herself. She convinced herself that she was merely going through with the ceremony to fulfill Joel's wish. Once it was over, she would return fully to her family and settle down with me for good.…The wedding day arrived quickly. The ceremony was incredibly grand, with flowers and ri
