Chapter 2

Author: Bright Lights
Hannah initially wanted to decline the call, but sheer habit made her swipe to answer.

The moment the line connected, Ethan's arrogant voice came barking through the speaker. "Have you come to your senses yet? I'm giving you a chance to make up for your bad behavior.

"Sara spent all day traveling to get the marriage certificate and hours standing out in the cold. She needs to rest, so you're taking her place at the client dinner tonight. If you do a good job, I might even overlook that passive-aggressive attitude of yours earlier..."

Listening to him order her around like a servant, Hannah let out a cold, bitter laugh. This guy seemed to have forgotten that she was the one who had stood outside City Hall from sunrise to sunset, shivering in the bitter cold while waiting for him.

There had been a time when all it took was a sneeze from her in a drafty room for Ethan to look at her with deep concern, immediately taking off his coat and draping it over her shoulders.

Back home, he would rush to make her hot tea with lemon and honey and bring her cold medicine, terrified that she might catch a chill and get sick.

And now? He was ordering her around like some disposable tool, completely indifferent to how she felt. And he seemed to have forgotten something far more serious.

Hannah was severely allergic to alcohol. She couldn't even have a drop.

During the early years, when she had helped him build the Turner Group from the ground up, they had constantly been forced to entertain clients and endure drinking dinners just to secure contracts.

Back then, Ethan had treated her health as his top priority. Whenever possible, he turned down drinking engagements altogether.

When there was no way out, he would step in and take every drink for her. More than once, he had come home completely drunk, clutching the toilet and vomiting until there was nothing left in his stomach.

Yet even then, he would force himself to endure the discomfort, reassuring her that he was fine and telling her to get some sleep so she wouldn't worry herself sick.

His entire world used to revolve around her, and now he had given his heart to someone else.

Snapping back to reality, Hannah refused to make another pathetic compromise to save a relationship that had already fallen apart.

"I'm allergic to alcohol. I can't do it," she said flatly. "Besides, that dinner is Sara's responsibility. It's not part of my job."

Her blunt refusal caught him off guard, but his surprise quickly turned into fury.

"I reached out to you with an olive branch, and this is how you respond?" he snapped. "I pay your salary. When I tell you to do something, you do it. That's what your job requires."

"Then I quit," Hannah said evenly, ending the call before Ethan could respond.

Then she dialed a number she hadn't called in a long time. When the call connected, she spoke seriously. "Mr. Carter, I'm accepting your offer."

The man on the other end was the CEO of a major international design firm, one of the industry's biggest players.

They met a year ago during a joint venture. Just before they signed the contract, she happened to notice a critical structural flaw in one of the company's flagship products, which was about to launch.

The defect had resulted from an aesthetic design choice that could easily have caused mechanical failure and triggered a massive public-relations disaster.

After Hannah pointed it out, Ernest Carter immediately ordered a full investigation and modified the assembly line just before the official launch, saving the company tens of millions of dollars in potential losses.

From that day forward, Ernest became one of the few people Hannah considered a true friend.

After looking into her situation and learning that she was being sidelined at Ethan's firm, he had flown in overnight more than once to recruit her, offering her the position of Design Director along with $100 million in stock options.

But Ethan suffered from lingering childhood trauma and refused to move abroad, preferring to stay close to home. Because of that, Hannah had repeatedly turned down Ernest's lucrative offers, sacrificing what could have been a brilliant career just to remain by Ethan's side.

Back then, she genuinely believed her devotion would eventually be met with the same devotion in return. Instead, she had lost everything.

Looking back now, she realized she'd spent the best years of her youth sacrificing herself to help Ethan survive a decade of struggle, only to discover that he hadn't even considered her worthy of a simple marriage certificate.

It had all been a terrible waste. Now, it was finally time to put herself first.

...

Ernest's delighted voice pulled her back to the present.

"Are you serious, Hannah?" he asked. "Our doors are always open for you. But didn't you say you were getting married and settling down? What made you change your mind?"

Hannah let out a self-deprecating laugh. "It's nothing. I broke up with my boyfriend."

Silence fell over the line.

Then Ernest offered warm words of comfort. "I don't know the whole story, but I know your character. Losing you is entirely his loss."

Moments later, Hannah's phone chimed with a notification: a bank transfer of $100,000.

"Take that for now and use it to get your affairs in order," Ernest said. "I'll be waiting for you whenever you're ready to fly over."

Hannah smiled quietly.

After briefly discussing her new responsibilities, she ended the call and prepared to accept the transfer when Ethan posted another update on social media.

The man standing in her kitchen wasn't Rhys.It was Ethan. He was wearing the hoodie Hannah had bought for him years ago, shortly after she graduated, as he carefully placed the final dish on the dining table. The moment he saw Hannah, Ethan froze before forcing a smile."Hannah, you're back. You must be exhausted from work. I made some of your favorite dishes. Don't worry. I don't mean anything by this. I just wanted to say a proper goodbye. Didn't you use to love the food I made?"Hannah glanced at the table piled with spicy dishes and felt absolutely nothing. It was true that she had once loved spicy food more than anything.Back then, even if Ethan just whipped up a simple dish with chili crisp, she would eat every bite with delight. But apparently, he'd forgotten. Or perhaps he'd never cared enough to remember.Over the years, Hannah had poured her blood, sweat, and countless sleepless nights into building his company. The endless client dinners and brutal workloads had ev

With Rhys holding her close, Hannah nodded gently.During her three months overseas, Rhys had taken exceptional care of her and had always respected and admired her talent. As it happened, she had grown fond of him too. So, when he confessed his feelings, she said yes, and the two of them officially started dating. When Rhys later learned that Hannah had once shared a matching bracelet with Ethan, he became so jealous that he insisted on taking her out to get a new pair for them.Neither of them had imagined it would lead to a misunderstanding like this.Ethan stared in disbelief at the way Rhys held Hannah. After a long pause, he demanded, "What did you say? Girlfriend? You two are dating? No way. I don't believe it. Hannah loved me so much. How could she possibly fall for someone else?"Then, as though he'd suddenly thought of an explanation, Ethan gave a relieved laugh."I get it! Hannah, you hired this guy to make me jealous, didn't you? That's quite a convincing performance

The moment Ethan saw Hannah, his eyes lit up. He jogged over to her side and caught her hand."Hannah, why did you block and delete me? And ever since you left, I've been posting photos with Sara on social media every day. I posted so many photos of us together. Why weren't you jealous at all?"You used to hate seeing Sara and me get close. Back then, I merely shared a cup of coffee with her and used the same straw, and you were so furious that you flipped the table. Why aren't you reacting now?"Hannah looked at him in confusion. "Yes, I flipped the table. But didn't you accuse me of being possessive, having a dirty mind, and seeing something filthy in everything?"Didn't you insist that you and Sara were strictly boss and employee and tell me to stop overthinking? Didn't you always want me to be more open-minded and generous? Now that I'm finally giving you exactly what you wanted, you should be happy."Seeing how completely unfazed she was, Ethan tightened his grip on her hand.

Before long, Ethan's once-thriving company became entangled in lawsuits and sank deep into a mountain of debt. Its stock price plummeted off a cliff. As for Ethan's grand threat to "blacklist Hannah from the industry," it had become nothing more than a joke. How could a company that couldn't even save itself, with its reputation in ruins, have any say over who remained in the industry? With nothing standing in her way, Hannah quickly established herself at Ernest's company. A string of brilliant design proposals delivered exceptional results, and her career continued to climb. To her, that so-called blacklisting was nothing more than a passing breeze. When Ernest learned about her failed relationship, he even took it upon himself to play matchmaker, hoping to help her move on."Hannah, what do you think of Rhys from the HR department?" he asked.Hannah was caught off guard.Rhys was a relatively new HR manager at the company. Though young, he was remarkably mature and capable,

"What?"Ethan's voice shot up into a shrill screech, like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on."Have you lost your mind? 50 percent? Why don't you just rob a bank? Do you really think this company can't survive without you?"Hearing his hysterical shouting, Hannah merely shook her head.It seemed he'd truly forgotten. Forgotten every promise he'd made when they first started the company. Forgotten everything he'd once said while holding her hand and swearing that they would build the business together. But Hannah still remembered those early days.Only a few months after the company was founded, they had already run out of money because they lacked a clear understanding of the market and had no viable business model. The corporate account was empty, and the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. It was Hannah who sold her parents' house, the property she had intended to rely on in her later years, and poured every penny into the company. She used the money to pay dozens

"Greedy? Me?" Hannah snorted, pointing at herself."I suppose Ethan has sheltered you so thoroughly that you have no idea how ordinary people actually live. And you certainly don't understand how ridiculous those words sound coming from you."She adjusted her Bluetooth earbud and continued with a scoff, "When I was building this company from the ground up with Ethan, I scrimped and saved, eating boiled vegetables with a little vinegar and soy sauce day after day."Even the lipstick I wore came from the dollar store. I drove that old Volkswagen for more than ten years, and the air conditioning barely worked."I was drenched in sweat every summer and freezing every winter. When I once suggested saving up for a modest car, do you know what Ethan said?"Hannah paused, then mimicked his old tone with a mocking smile. "He said, 'Hannah, we're in the middle of building a startup. How can you be so materialistic?"'Do you have any idea how much even a modest car costs once you add all th
