Chapter 3

Author: Her Eyes
Amanda's reddened eyes burned with a look of obsession that seemed almost unhinged. "As long as you make her get rid of the babies, I won't care how you got out of that hospital or who you slept with after that.

"As long as you come back to me, I can give you anything—be it shares in Crane Group, my assets, or even my life."

She grabbed the front of my shirt in desperation, gripping so hard I could barely breathe.

"I know you still love me! You're just angry with me. What happened back then was my fault. I shouldn't have sent you there… but I did it for your own good!" she insisted.

"You became too extreme and obsessed. You even held a knife to your throat! All I wanted was for you to calm down a bit."

I scoffed in anger. "You need to get something straight, Amanda. My wife is 36 weeks pregnant. You want her to get an abortion when she's almost due? Are you trying to kill her, too?

"And secondly, you had locked me in a room barely bigger than a closet. You let the attendants pin me down and force the medication down my throat, making me beg like a dog. Are you trying to claim that all of that was for my own good?"

"That's impossible!" Amanda froze for a second before immediately refuting me. "I sent you to the best psychiatric facility there is, Steven. I spent a fortune to make sure that they took good care of you! I know you're upset, but—"

Ignoring her, I rolled up my sleeves to reveal a dark scar.

"You're the reason why I developed my so-called mental illness, Amanda. And this is what I got when those people pinned me down on the floor and beat me up after you sent me there. Is this what you meant when you said they took good care of me?"

At the sight of the scar, Amanda looked as if she'd been struck by lightning. Her hand trembled as she reached out to touch the scar, but I flung her hand off.

"Don't touch me!" I snarled before adjusting my shirt that had gotten wrinkled from her grip.

"And one more thing. The twins are the result of the love my wife and I have for each other. I will never let anything happen to them. If you dare touch any of them, I'll drag you and Ian down to hell with me!"

Amanda stumbled backward. She'd never seen this side of me before.

"No… That's not what you said in the past… You said you couldn't live without me…"

"You said it yourself. That was the past." I eyed her coldly. "And right now, all I want is for you to stay the hell away from me."

"Mandy…"

At that moment, a timid voice cut in.

Ian walked over, holding a cup of coffee, his gaze flicking back and forth between us.

"Mandy, I've been waiting for you so that we can have lunch together. Why did you run over here without saying anything?"

The hatred and possessiveness in Amanda's eyes made Ian feel threatened, prompting him to act.

"Don't be upset anymore, Steven," he said with his typical innocent, appeasing smile.

It was the same tired trick again.

"Back then, it was all my fault. I was the one who insisted on calling Mandy to help me fix my computer. It's my fault for not being able to get a ride from the airport because of the rain. If you want to blame someone, blame me. Stop torturing Mandy with everything."

Ian deliberately brought up those past incidents, clearly wanting me to fly off the handle, start a fight, and cause a scene like some lunatic.

That way, he could duck behind Amanda and act all pitiful, saying, "Why is Steven being so aggressive?"

It was the perfect foil for his own innocent act.

He'd done it countless times three years ago. However, the old me back then reacted that way because I cared about Amanda. I loved her and didn't want her to get too close to another man.

I empathized with her for the emotional trauma she'd endured since childhood. I wanted her to feel loved. I remembered every word she ever said to me back then.

But this time, I simply frowned and remarked, "Your acting is a little over the top this time, Mr. Lewis."

A few years passed after that.Crane Group's lawyers vehemently argued that Ian's death was a suicide. In the end, Amanda was sentenced to several years of prison time for intentional injury. The day she was released, the sky was overcast. The first thing she did after getting out was go to my old house. It was dark out. Amanda stood under a streetlight, tilting her head up to look at the second-floor window. Warm light spilled from the glass, looking like a home far out of reach, with a light left on just for her. It looked almost beyond her grasp, as if she could only return to this sanctuary in her dreams."Go on. Take it to him," Amanda said hoarsely as she handed an expensive men's watch to Eric, who was beside her. "Tell him it's a gift to congratulate him on the birth of his son."Eric hesitated, his expression uncertain. "Ms. Crane, are you sure that's a good idea? Mr. Walsh is—""Why are you still standing here? Hurry up and do as I say!" she snapped.Sighing, Eric t

Ian froze, his whole body stiffening. Before he could make a run for it, Amanda grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the crowd.Without a word, she slapped him hard across the face.Stars exploded in Ian's vision, and his eyes watered. "Why did you hit me, Mandy? Did I do something wrong?""The nerve of you to ask me that!" Amanda snarled as she glowered at him, her eyes bloodshot. "How dare you pay people to torture Steven? He's the man I love! You had them lock him up and deny him food and water for three days! You had them pin him to the floor and beat him up, breaking two of his ribs! You made him suffer such abuse! Are you even human?"Faced with her murderous rage, Ian finally dropped his act. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and snorted. "Oh. So you've uncovered everything. That's right. I did all that. So what?"Amanda almost had a meltdown as she screamed at him, "If it hadn't been for you, Steven and I would've gotten married by now! We would've had

Amanda's eyes widened, and her entire body stiffened."I spent a whole day and night preparing for the proposal," I informed her. "I hid the ring. I wanted to surprise you, to tell you we'd be forming our own little family—that you wouldn't have to worry about me leaving you anymore. But one phone call from Ian, and you wanted to run off to pick him up."I got so mad. I didn't want you to still be involved with another man, even on the day I was about to propose to you. I wanted to stop you. But in the end, what happened?"I chuckled bitterly, the ash from the cigarette scalding my fingertips, but I couldn't feel it."You shipped me off to a psychiatric hospital. You destroyed our happiness with your own hands, Amanda."Amanda fell to her knees, looking like her soul had been ripped out of her. Her trembling hands reached toward me, but she couldn't touch me."No… That's not true… I didn't know! I thought—"At that moment, her phone rang. The jarring sound kept going off, so she

My heart didn't stir at all at the sight. As I looked down at her wobbly figure, I snapped, "Don't come any closer! I'm married. Take one more step, and I'll call the police!"Amanda was rooted to the spot, but she refused to give up. Her breath came out as mist, and her eyes were frighteningly bloodshot."I know you're married, Steven. I don't mind… I don't need to be your wife. I can leave all the shares of Crane Group to you and your children, as long as you let me stay by your side! I can even be their nanny… I can even be your mistress! Just don't drive me away!"That made me laugh. "You disgust me so much, Amanda. There's no room for three people in a relationship. Don't you know that? My wife and I have a wonderful marriage. I don't need you to get in our way.""No! Steven, I won't get in your way," Amanda desperately tried to plead with me. "I just want to see you. As long as I can see you, that's enough…"But at that moment, Mia stepped out of the house. I hadn't even not

All along, Amanda only wanted me to prove that I cared about her. She never wanted me to hurt myself. That was why she chose to put me in a psychiatric hospital, hoping that I would gain a hold of myself once more—hoping that someone else could take care of the "sick" me in her place. She firmly believed that once I was better, I'd come back to her.Even when Ian tried to enter this study, she ripped into him and told him to get out. This was my territory. No one else was allowed to come in.So, she couldn't understand why I wasn't coming back to this house and to her.Amanda stood there in a daze, her fingers brushing over a portrait of me on the wall. Her hand trembled, and with a soft thud, a black notebook fell out from behind the frame.Startled, she picked it up with shaking hands. When she read the first entry, she realized it'd been written the day she first took a photo with Ian."Amanda took a photo with Ian today. I got into a huge fight with her and threw a lot of t

With a pair of sunglasses on, Amanda hid in the corner of the obstetrics ward, like a petty thief spying on another family's happiness. At first, she only wanted to catch a glimpse of me—just for a moment. But she saw me kneeling on one knee, gently helping Mia change into a pair of comfortable flats before carefully massaging her slightly swollen calves. It was clear from my tender movements that I'd done this a thousand times before.Mia held the ultrasound report in her hand, smiling so brightly that her eyes crinkled."Look! Our two little babies are growing so well." She pointed at the black-and-white images, her tone cheerful."It's a good thing they take after you. I'm sure they'll be just as steady and even-tempered as you are. It'd be such a huge headache if they ended up having volatile tempers, flying off the handle at any given moment, like your ex."Amanda felt as if her heart had been ripped out of her chest. She couldn't take it anymore. In a few quick strides, she
