Chapter 3

Author: M
Danielle dragged Caleb back to the Sutton residence and locked him in their bedroom.

"Caleb, if Yale did something to offend you, you could've just talked to him about it instead of plotting something behind his back," Danielle snapped, trying her best to suppress her anger. "I'll let you out as soon as you tell me where he is."

Trapped in that cold, empty room, Caleb felt as though a weight were pressing down on his chest.

The next moment, Yale returned.

Leaning toward Danielle, he asked, "What's going on, Ellie? I just went on a walk by myself to get some fresh air.

"You should be nicer to Caleb. He's sensitive. It's only natural that he's uncomfortable with how close we are."

Danielle froze, and a flicker of guilt flashed across her face.

"I'm sorry, Caleb. I—"

But before she could finish speaking, a butler hurried into the room, his face pale with alarm. In a trembling voice, he said, "Something awful has happened, Mr. Graham! Mrs. Graham Senior suffered a sudden stroke back at home. By the time the ambulance arrived, she had already stopped breathing. You must head back right away and see her one last time!"

Caleb couldn't process what he'd just heard.

For a moment, he couldn't move, and his ears began to ring. Then, his head shot up, and he glared at Danielle with a look of pure hatred. Without saying another word, he turned around and dashed out of the Sutton residence.

By the time he reached the funeral hall, his mother's body was already covered with a white shroud.

His legs gave out, and he fell to his knees. Unable to hold back his tears, he began to sob hysterically. He was so grief-stricken that he'd nearly passed out several times.

…

For the next three days, Caleb stayed by Lydia's grave without any food or water. Danielle stayed by his side the entire time. Her heart ached as she watched him grow more gaunt with each passing day.

By dusk on the third day, Caleb slowly turned to her.

"Let's get a divorce, Danielle," he said, his voice utterly devoid of emotion.

Danielle's face stiffened, and she instantly stepped toward him. "I'm sorry, Caleb. I messed up. I never thought something like this would happen—"

"You never thought this would happen?" Caleb cut her off with a cold laugh. "I tried to tell you! Because of Yale, you locked me up without even hearing my side. My mother gave you resources, projects, and the entire company to pave the way for your success. Have you forgotten about all of that?

"You insist that your relationship is platonic, but I find that hard to believe when the both of you sleep together in the same bed!" he growled.

Danielle froze, and her eyes widened in shock.

"W-When did you find out about that?"

Moments later, the guilt faded from her face. Her expression hardened, and her tone turned forceful. "I won't divorce you no matter what, Caleb. I have the authority now, and I'm the one calling the shots in the Graham family. Just fulfill your role as my husband and stop talking about a divorce."

With that, she gave him one last look and walked away.

Caleb watched her leave. Then, he turned to an old butler, Adrian Cole, who had been standing nearby.

"Adrian, find the prenuptial agreement my mother had prepared. I want to withdraw every share I've invested in Danielle's company, effective immediately."

"Every share?" Adrian hesitated. "Without your shares, Ms. Sutton's company might not last another month."

"I've made up my mind. Just do it." Caleb's voice was low, but he sounded unusually certain.

Moments later, he added, "And get me the best divorce lawyer you can find. I want to leave Kingsford City as soon as possible."

Adrian took one look at Caleb's exhausted, hollow expression and decided not to ask any more questions.

"Of course, sir."

…

The living room was cluttered with luxury gift boxes and limited-edition jewelry. Danielle had bought them all as an apology, but Caleb barely glanced at them as he headed upstairs.

Once he was inside the bedroom, he closed the door and sent a message to Future Danielle.

"I was too late."

For a long moment, he didn't receive a reply. Then, three words appeared on the screen.

"I am sorry."

Caleb instantly grew anxious, and he quickly tucked his phone away. Unfortunately for him, Danielle noticed his telltale little gesture.

Whatever apology she'd been about to offer disappeared, and she instantly grew suspicious.

"Who were you messaging?" she demanded as she closed the distance between them. "Is this why you've been acting so strangely these past few days, Caleb? Have you found someone new?"

Soon, Caleb and Naomi held a second wedding ceremony. This time, there was no grand celebration—only their closest friends were invited. The sea breeze was gentle, and Naomi wore a loose, white wedding dress, holding a bouquet of lilies.Caleb got on one knee before her and slipped the ring back onto her finger. His voice caught slightly as he spoke. "Naomi, I used to think that missing my chance with you was the greatest regret of my life. But later, I realized that as long as you're still willing to move forward, I'll still have a chance to walk beside you and see what the future holds. Thank you for believing in me."Naomi's eyes reddened slightly as she looked down at him. "Caleb, thank you for still choosing me."The guests burst into applause.Behind the trees, some distance away, Danielle stood quietly in the shadows. She didn't approach or intrude. She wore a gauzy dress with a slightly worn neckline, but she had carefully ironed it until it was perfectly smooth. She onl

After being discharged from the hospital, Danielle rented an old apartment in the area and made a living doing translation work for a trading company.Once, she had traveled by private jet and stayed in penthouse suites. Now, she squeezed onto crowded buses, wore dresses washed pale with age, and carried home bags of marked-down bread.Half a month later, news came from back home. The last piece of property under her name had been auctioned off.In the screenshot Gideon sent her, the former Sutton residence was listed with its final sale price. That was the home Caleb had personally furnished—the flower rack on the balcony, the rug in the living room, the night light in the nursery that had never been unpacked... In a single auction, they had all become nothing more than assets in the eyes of others.Danielle stared at the screen for a long time. Only when her eyes began to ache did she slowly set her phone face down on the table. She thought she would eventually grow numb to i

When Danielle woke up, the first person she saw wasn't Caleb, but Naomi. Naomi was sitting beside the hospital bed, peeling an apple. Her movements were clumsy, and the peel broke several times.Danielle stared at her for a moment before asking hoarsely, "Where's he?"Without even looking up, Naomi replied, "My husband is resting."My husband. Those two words pricked at Danielle's heart like a needle. She closed her eyes briefly. "Is... Is he okay?"Naomi tossed the badly peeled apple into the trash and replied flatly, "He's fine. You took the knife meant for him, and the doctor said it would've been serious if it had landed even an inch away. But... you had a miscarriage."Danielle's lips curled into a faint, bitter smile. "Did he send you?""Yes." Naomi didn't deny it. "He said you were injured because of him, so he'll cover your medical expenses and the cost of a caregiver. But he doesn't feel comfortable coming to see you."The light in Danielle's eyes slowly faded. She wou

The local court found Danielle guilty of harassment, attempted unlawful restraint, and disruption of public order, so she was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.Throughout those three months, Danielle never had a single peaceful night's sleep. Everything around her felt like a dense, suffocating web, trapping her completely.Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw Caleb's wrist, reddened by her grip, and remembered the resolute look on his face.Late into the night, she would dream of how he used to stay up late revising proposals for her, calluses on his hand from the pen, yet still smiling as he told her, "It's okay. I believe in you."She remembered the first time he drew her into his arms and whispered, "Danielle, I love you."She remembered their wedding day, when he stood before her in his suit and said earnestly, "Danielle, you're the only one I'll ever marry."His love for her had been real—every bit of it. But back then, she had turned a blind eye to it all and tramp

After that night, Danielle couldn't wait any longer. She bought a house near Caleb's gallery and showered him with flowers, jewelry, and all the gifts he used to like but never got to own.Caleb didn't accept a single thing. Everything was sent back intact, some items left completely unopened.Refusing to accept defeat, Danielle had someone contact local media to organize a massive solo exhibition for him. When Caleb found out, he sent back a single message. "I won't participate if the organizer has anything to do with Danielle."His refusal was sharp and absolute, leaving no room for negotiation.Danielle sat in the empty house, watching the returned gifts pile up in her living room, and suddenly burst into laughter. As she laughed, tears began to stream down her face. How had she ever been so sure that Caleb would never leave her?Right then, her phone buzzed with a final notice from her bank back home. The liquidation of her personal assets was complete, and the remaining

Danielle refused to give up.She stopped barging into Caleb's house, choosing instead to watch him from afar every day at a coffee shop across from the gallery.Caleb arrived at 9:00 am and left at 6:00 pm.Sometimes Naomi joined him, and other times he walked back alone along the shore. He would chat with the gallery owner about exhibits, patiently teach children to paint, and offer his umbrella to students caught in the rain. Yet she was no longer part of any of it.That evening, the gallery hosted a small exhibition. One of Caleb's pieces sat right in the center. It depicted a morning sea bathed in golden light, with two figures holding hands in the distance.Danielle stared at it for a long time.Someone nearby asked with a smile, "Mr. Graham, what's the title of this piece?"Standing in the crowd, Caleb answered softly, "New Beginning."A sharp, dull ache hit Danielle's chest. She used to think that Caleb couldn't survive without her, but the truth was, he only truly st
