Chapter 2

Author: Jersey Wind
Night fell, and I changed into an inconspicuous outfit, evaded the eyes and ears around the secluded estate, and made my way down a familiar route toward Bramford's most bustling riverside. Pleasure boats stretched along the river, their neon lights glowing beneath a haze of revelry and wine.

I boarded the largest one and deftly pushed open the door to the VIP suite. The moment I stepped inside, the heavy scent of perfume hit me.

The rakish Marchioness, Sienna Fairfax, was lounging on a couch, her shirt half-unbuttoned and her posture languid.

Several handsome male courtesans swarmed around her, one feeding her wine while another massaged her legs. She lazily waved her signature ivory-handled fan, wearing a dashing, carefree smile that made her look like a living embodiment of wealth and splendor.

When she saw me walk in, Lady Fairfax arched her brow, a hint of amusement dancing in her captivating eyes. She pushed away the person beside her and sat up straight.

"Well, well, look who decided to drop by. What's up, Mr. Pemberton? Are you jealous? Did you run all the way here in the middle of the night to check up on me?"

I paid her teasing no mind. I stepped forward, pulled out a thick ledger from my sleeve, and handed it to her with both hands. "My lady, you jest."

I said in a strictly businesslike tone, "Winter is right around the corner. As agreed, it's time to settle the fall dividends for our cosmetics store."

The smile on her face stiffened for a moment. Instead of taking the ledger, she used her fan to tilt my chin up. Her eyes lingered on my face.

In an effort to make a little extra money, I had personally taken to the streets to market the cosmetics I had formulated myself. As luck would have it, I had stumbled upon Lady Fairfax, who was being hunted down by her enemies.

At the time, she was gravely injured, and she had collapsed in a dark alley. Initially, I didn't want to poke my nose into other people's business, but the egg-sized sapphire hanging from her waist had been far too dazzling to ignore.

Hence, on a whim, I had flung the entire bag of pepper-infused face powder in my hand straight into the assassins' eyes and dragged her away.

Later, after she looked into my background, she didn't silence me to cover her tracks. If anything, she found my money-grubbing, mercenary ways refreshing.

Lady Fairfax provided the capital, and I supplied the formulas. Together, we established the biggest cosmetics store in Bramford. Concurrently, I also became one of her male confidants who could never see the light of day.

"Carpe," she sneered, flicking her wrist and tapping my forehead with her fan, "I simply adore how heartless and money-obsessed a mercenary you are."

Lady Fairfax turned her head and shot her attendant a look. The attendant immediately walked over with a heavy rosewood chest.

When I popped it open, there were 20 gold bars neatly stacked inside. The golden glow was so dazzling it nearly blinded me.

Noticing my eyes lit up, she said lazily, "Take it. It includes both your principal and your share of the profits. Remember, we're both getting what we need out of this. Let's not bring feelings into this. It's bad for business."

I immediately wrapped my arms around the wooden box. Its weight alone provided me with a profound sense of security.

I grinned from ear to ear and nodded enthusiastically. "You hit the nail right on the head, my lady! Feelings can't hold a candle to cold, hard gold."

I took two steps back and continued respectfully, "I wish you endless riches, a different groom every night, and the freedom to enjoy countless romantic encounters without getting attached, my lady!"

Lady Fairfax gaped at me, the corner of her eye twitching slightly, as I hugged the gold bars to my chest and walked off the boat without a shred of hesitation.

"Carpe…" Princess Christina was the first to drop her longsword. It hit the ground with a sharp clatter, as if it had shattered the last remnants of her pride. Clutching her bleeding chest, she walked toward me one slow step at a time. The woman who had once been the untouchable Princess Royal suddenly gave way at the knees and dropped straight down before me."I'm not going anywhere." Princess Christina looked up at me with bloodshot eyes that were filled with despair and desperation. "I surrendered my title. I have nothing left. I only have you. So long as you don't drive me away, I'll do whatever you want."I'll guard your estate. I'll dirty my hands for you. I'll work like a dog for you… I don't want a prince consort anymore. "Please just give me a room somewhere on your estate. I just want to see you every day…"Lady Fairfax abandoned her crutch the moment she saw that. She hopped toward me on one leg and threw herself down at my feet with a heavy thud, wrapping both arms t

"Drop the act, Ms. Standish!' Lady Fairfax scoffed as if she had just heard the biggest joke in the world. Pointing at Ms. Standish's nose, she snarled, "Do you think we're unaware of all the filthy things you've done? You bought him with a thousand dollars just to use him as a substitute for Lysander. While looking at his face, you called out another man's name, and you trampled all over his sincere feelings! "Now that he's dumped you, you come running back here pretending you're some devoted lover? You're the worst of us all! You're even worse than me! At least I gave him everything I had!"Ms. Standish's cold and ethereal face instantly drained of all color. The word "substitute" was her deepest sore spot and the stain she could never erase. She abruptly unsheathed the slender sword at her waist and pointed it straight at Lady Fairfax's throat. "You must have a death wish, Lady Fairfax!" "Bring it on! Do you think I'm afraid of you?" Lady Fairfax kicked her crutch aside and

My brows drew together. Claire might have been timid, but she had always followed the rules. She wouldn't drop the ball on such an important occasion unless someone stopped her. I let out a derisive chuckle and casually pulled out a small dagger I kept for protection, gripping it in my hand. "Come on. We're going inside to see what's going on."I adjusted the white-gold crown on my head and strode out of the dressing room. The moment I stepped into the front courtyard, I was so amused by the spectacle before me that I nearly laughed out loud. Well, damn! The estate, which I had spent a fortune to renovate, had descended into an absolute warzone. Princess Christina's Black-Armored Guards had surrounded the entire Pemberton residence so tightly that not even a fly could have gotten through. Perched on the rooftops were a dozen masked assassins in black. Judging by their skill and bearing, they were the highly trained covert revenants from Lady Fairfax's household. Lastly, stat

"Carpe." Ms. Standish took a step forward and bent her knees. As Claire watched in sheer horror, the Grand Tutor—who stood at the pinnacle of power—actually dropped to her knees before me. She lowered herself to the ground and, with trembling hands, took mine in hers, gazing up at me with reverence. Her eyes, which were usually filled with disdain and superiority, were now brimming with tears. Large droplets splashed against the back of my hand, scalding hot. "I was wrong… I was dead wrong. I thought I loved him, but after you left, I looked at that empty residence and realized I simply couldn't live without you! "Without you beside me while I go through my papers, I can't seem to read a thing. Without you sitting beside me counting my money, all the wealth in my family feels utterly meaningless!"Ms. Standish clutched my hand as though it were the last lifeline keeping her afloat. "I won't be the Grand Tutor anymore. I won't concern myself with the Standish family either. Car

The marchioness, who once flitted through suitors and treated men like disposable clothes, was now sobbing like an abandoned stray dog. "I don't want money anymore. I don't want anything else! I only want you!" Clinging to my legs, Lady Fairfax pleaded incoherently, "I was wrong, Carpe. I was just putting on a front because I was afraid that if I fell for you first, you'd have me wrapped around your finger… I was wrong… Please, don't marry her, okay? If… If you insist on marrying her…"Gritting her teeth, a flicker of madness and desperation flashed through her eyes. "Then, I'll be your mistress! Keep me hidden outside. I don't need a title or status. I'll even pay you to keep me! Please don't drive me away…"Her words left me utterly thunderstruck. A high and mighty marchioness was offering to be a mistress to a man from a humble merchant background? Lady Fairfax might not care about her dignity, but I still valued my life. Without a shred of mercy, I pulled my leg free and took

That night, a torrential downpour swept through Saltmarsh. I was sitting in the warm secondary room of my new home, working on my calculator and checking the accounts for the silk shop. All of a sudden, a dull thud echoed from the courtyard, as though something heavy had crashed onto the stone paving. I frowned, opened an umbrella, and pushed open the door with a torch in hand. In the courtyard, rain poured down in sheets. A drenched figure was struggling to pull herself up from the ground. She didn't have an umbrella. Her luxurious suit was soaked through and caked with mud, and her impeccably styled hair now clung loosely to her cheeks in a disheveled mess. There was not a single trace left of the dashing Marchioness of Bramford. It was Lady Fairfax. She appeared to be severely injured. Her right leg was bent at an unnatural angle, and every step made her suck in a sharp breath. When she saw me, she jerked her head up. Those captivating eyes, which were usually brimming with
