Chapter 1

I sat cross-legged on the couch, laying out the banknotes, gold leaves, loose silver coins, and several land deeds I had saved up over the years. I counted them carefully three times. It came to a total of three million dollars. I took a deep breath and thought even the air tasted sweet.

With this fortune, I could easily buy a thousand acres of fertile land in Saltmarsh, set up a sprawling five-courtyard mansion, and live in comfort as a wealthy gentleman, with ten young helpers hired to wait on me while I drank wine and listened to music.

The door creaked open, letting in a gust of the cold late-fall wind. Quick on my feet, I yanked the embroidered quilt over the bed to hide the heap of gold and silver.

The aloof and austere Grand Tutor, Misty Standish, strode into the room. She wore a moon-white outfit, pristine and spotless. Her brows drew together, and she carried an innate air of superiority.

Without sparing me so much as a glance, she walked straight to the table. She casually tossed an exquisite trapiche emerald onto the table, and it landed with a crisp clink.

"Lysander's birthday is next month." Her voice was cold and flat. "I'm going to accompany him to the Chapel of the Pale Flame to pray. For the next fortnight, you'll stay at the estate. Don't cause trouble, and don't set foot outside."

Lysander Endicott was the son of the chancellor's legal wife, as well as Ms. Standish's childhood sweetheart, whom she had protected and cared for since they were young.

I climbed down from the couch and shuffled over in my slippers, swiftly stuffing the trapiche emerald into my outfit. It felt warm and smooth to the touch. Good stuff. I could pawn it for at least 500 dollars.

I looked up and flashed her a thoroughly pleasant smile, my tone perfectly agreeable. "Rest assured, Ms. Standish. I'll be on my absolute best behavior and keep my eyesore of a self out of your way."

Ms. Standish lowered her gaze to look at me. Her eyes settled on my face, which was glowing with delight at having gotten my hands on the emerald.

The corners of her lips instinctively curved upward ever so slightly, but the hint of a smile was soon replaced by a trace of disgust, as though she found my money-grubbing delight utterly vulgar.

"Know your place," she spat out before turning on her heel and walking out. I stood rooted to the spot, watching her retreating figure disappear beyond the courtyard gate.

The smile vanished from my face in an instant. Ms. Standish wanted me to know my place? Oh, I knew my place all too well.

I turned around and walked to the bed, pulled back the quilt, and pulled out the bundle I had prepared long ago. Then, I began stuffing banknotes into it.

Half a month? Ms. Standish, you were far too generous. Half a month was more than enough time for me to hire the fastest carriage, race all the way back to my distant hometown, Saltmarsh, and marry my sweet, down-to-earth childhood sweetheart, Claire Mortimer.

I was the son of a fallen merchant from Saltmarsh. Dad had lost everything in business before kicking the bucket and leaving me with a mountain of debt.

To pay off those debts, I had taken the ten dollars Claire scraped together for me and set out to the capital on my own to make a living. I had no special skills other than writing a fine hand, so I'd set up a small stall on the streets of Bramford to write letters for people.

It had been drizzling that day when Ms. Standish's carriage pulled up in front of my stall. She lifted the curtain and stared at me for a long while.

I only learned later that it wasn't my calligraphy she had taken a liking to. It was the way my profile, as I lowered my head to grind the ink, bore a 30% resemblance to Lysander.

Lysander was far above my station, having already married the Third Princess as his legal wife. Unable to have the man she desired, Ms. Standish had bought me for a thousand dollars and sequestered me in this secluded estate.

She had taught me how to read, write, and play the lute, but she had never touched me. She simply liked to sit beneath the lamplight, watching me practice calligraphy, and use my face as a way to pine for another man.

I was crystal clear on where I stood. I never wasted energy on internal turmoil, nor did I ever indulge in love or sentiment.

I accepted all the gifts she gave me. If she wanted me to smile, I smiled. If she wanted me to be quiet, I kept my mouth shut.

I treated this purely as a high-paying job, conscientiously playing the part of a dutiful substitute. Now that the Third Princess had favored a concubine over her consort, Lysander had divorced her in a fit of rage and returned home.

Ms. Standish's true love was finally single again, so it was only natural for her to wait on him hand and foot. My mission as her substitute was complete, and it was time for me to step down and retire.

However, before I left, I still had two other accounts to settle. After all, the cost of living in Bramford had been far from cheap. To save up three million dollars as quickly as possible, I hadn't been working solely for Ms. Standish.

"Carpe…" Princess Christina was the first to drop her longsword. It hit the ground with a sharp clatter, as if it had shattered the last remnants of her pride. Clutching her bleeding chest, she walked toward me one slow step at a time. The woman who had once been the untouchable Princess Royal suddenly gave way at the knees and dropped straight down before me."I'm not going anywhere." Princess Christina looked up at me with bloodshot eyes that were filled with despair and desperation. "I surrendered my title. I have nothing left. I only have you. So long as you don't drive me away, I'll do whatever you want."I'll guard your estate. I'll dirty my hands for you. I'll work like a dog for you… I don't want a prince consort anymore. "Please just give me a room somewhere on your estate. I just want to see you every day…"Lady Fairfax abandoned her crutch the moment she saw that. She hopped toward me on one leg and threw herself down at my feet with a heavy thud, wrapping both arms t

"Drop the act, Ms. Standish!' Lady Fairfax scoffed as if she had just heard the biggest joke in the world. Pointing at Ms. Standish's nose, she snarled, "Do you think we're unaware of all the filthy things you've done? You bought him with a thousand dollars just to use him as a substitute for Lysander. While looking at his face, you called out another man's name, and you trampled all over his sincere feelings! "Now that he's dumped you, you come running back here pretending you're some devoted lover? You're the worst of us all! You're even worse than me! At least I gave him everything I had!"Ms. Standish's cold and ethereal face instantly drained of all color. The word "substitute" was her deepest sore spot and the stain she could never erase. She abruptly unsheathed the slender sword at her waist and pointed it straight at Lady Fairfax's throat. "You must have a death wish, Lady Fairfax!" "Bring it on! Do you think I'm afraid of you?" Lady Fairfax kicked her crutch aside and

My brows drew together. Claire might have been timid, but she had always followed the rules. She wouldn't drop the ball on such an important occasion unless someone stopped her. I let out a derisive chuckle and casually pulled out a small dagger I kept for protection, gripping it in my hand. "Come on. We're going inside to see what's going on."I adjusted the white-gold crown on my head and strode out of the dressing room. The moment I stepped into the front courtyard, I was so amused by the spectacle before me that I nearly laughed out loud. Well, damn! The estate, which I had spent a fortune to renovate, had descended into an absolute warzone. Princess Christina's Black-Armored Guards had surrounded the entire Pemberton residence so tightly that not even a fly could have gotten through. Perched on the rooftops were a dozen masked assassins in black. Judging by their skill and bearing, they were the highly trained covert revenants from Lady Fairfax's household. Lastly, stat

"Carpe." Ms. Standish took a step forward and bent her knees. As Claire watched in sheer horror, the Grand Tutor—who stood at the pinnacle of power—actually dropped to her knees before me. She lowered herself to the ground and, with trembling hands, took mine in hers, gazing up at me with reverence. Her eyes, which were usually filled with disdain and superiority, were now brimming with tears. Large droplets splashed against the back of my hand, scalding hot. "I was wrong… I was dead wrong. I thought I loved him, but after you left, I looked at that empty residence and realized I simply couldn't live without you! "Without you beside me while I go through my papers, I can't seem to read a thing. Without you sitting beside me counting my money, all the wealth in my family feels utterly meaningless!"Ms. Standish clutched my hand as though it were the last lifeline keeping her afloat. "I won't be the Grand Tutor anymore. I won't concern myself with the Standish family either. Car

The marchioness, who once flitted through suitors and treated men like disposable clothes, was now sobbing like an abandoned stray dog. "I don't want money anymore. I don't want anything else! I only want you!" Clinging to my legs, Lady Fairfax pleaded incoherently, "I was wrong, Carpe. I was just putting on a front because I was afraid that if I fell for you first, you'd have me wrapped around your finger… I was wrong… Please, don't marry her, okay? If… If you insist on marrying her…"Gritting her teeth, a flicker of madness and desperation flashed through her eyes. "Then, I'll be your mistress! Keep me hidden outside. I don't need a title or status. I'll even pay you to keep me! Please don't drive me away…"Her words left me utterly thunderstruck. A high and mighty marchioness was offering to be a mistress to a man from a humble merchant background? Lady Fairfax might not care about her dignity, but I still valued my life. Without a shred of mercy, I pulled my leg free and took

That night, a torrential downpour swept through Saltmarsh. I was sitting in the warm secondary room of my new home, working on my calculator and checking the accounts for the silk shop. All of a sudden, a dull thud echoed from the courtyard, as though something heavy had crashed onto the stone paving. I frowned, opened an umbrella, and pushed open the door with a torch in hand. In the courtyard, rain poured down in sheets. A drenched figure was struggling to pull herself up from the ground. She didn't have an umbrella. Her luxurious suit was soaked through and caked with mud, and her impeccably styled hair now clung loosely to her cheeks in a disheveled mess. There was not a single trace left of the dashing Marchioness of Bramford. It was Lady Fairfax. She appeared to be severely injured. Her right leg was bent at an unnatural angle, and every step made her suck in a sharp breath. When she saw me, she jerked her head up. Those captivating eyes, which were usually brimming with
