Chapter 3

Author: Jersey Wind
After leaving the pleasure boat, I made haste to my final stop—the hidden chamber of the Livingstone residence. Darkness had completely taken over, and not a single lamp had been lit inside the chamber. A faint scent of blood hung in the air.

The all-powerful Princess Royal, Christina Livingstone, sat on a rosewood chair. Bathed in the moonlight spilling through the window, she slowly wiped away the blood from the longsword in her hand with a white handkerchief. The blade had tasted countless lives.

Draped in a black silk robe, her face was grim, and murderous intent emanated from her entire being. I dropped to one knee, lowering my gaze and making myself as inconspicuous as possible.

Years ago, I ventured into the sacred hills beyond the city to forage for precious herbs, hoping to sell them for a good price. I stumbled upon Princess Christina, who was severely injured and barely alive after being poisoned.

I hadn't saved her out of the goodness of my heart. I had taken advantage of her plight, stripping her of her valuable emeralds and healing salves. For good measure, I had stuffed a few leaves of the detoxifying herb I'd dug up into her mouth, figuring it was worth trying even if she seemed beyond saving.

Who would've guessed that she was so resilient she actually woke up? Once she regained consciousness, she not only spared my life, but she also forcibly took me back to her hidden chamber.

Princess Christina wielded immense power, but she had made countless enemies and spent her life walking the razor's edge between life and death. She was ruthless, violent, and bloodthirsty.

I became her bedwarmer, someone she used to relieve her stress. All she demanded was absolute obedience. I, on the other hand, coveted the rare treasures she casually tossed my way whenever we were done.

We both had our own ulterior motives, and the arrangement worked out perfectly.

"You're here," she said apathetically without looking up. "Come here and help me change."

I stepped forward and deftly unfastened her outer robe. I had just touched her belt when her large hand suddenly clamped around my chin, forcing me to look up.

Her gaze was as sharp as a hawk's, filled with scrutiny. "His Majesty has decreed a marriage for me. My prince consort is the son of the chancellor's legal wife. We're getting married on the eighth day of next month."

My heart leaped for joy. The son of the chancellor's legal wife? Wasn't that Ms. Standish's true love, Lysander? What a small world we lived in!

However, on the surface, I lowered my eyes and schooled my expression into one of profound sorrow. Noticing my reaction, a flash of coldness flickered in her eyes.

Princess Christina released her grip and warned me, "You're nothing more than my kept man. Know your place, and don't harbor any delusions. I'll only marry a nobleman from an established family. I'll never make a merchant's son my lawful husband."

With that, she lifted her foot and kicked a velvet box at her feet toward me.

The box popped open, and more than a dozen extraordinarily rare pearls, each about the size of a pigeon's egg, rolled out. They were perfectly round and lustrous, worth a fortune. It was the carrot after the stick.

Looking at those pearls, I could barely suppress the grin tugging at the corners of my mouth. I was rich!

Without the slightest hesitation, I picked up the pearls one by one and tucked them into my pocket. Then, I took three steps back and dropped heavily to my knees, pressing my forehead to the floor.

"Congratulations, Your Highness!" I said sincerely. "I'm nothing but a lowly, uncultured merchant's son, and I would never dare sully the eyes of your future prince consort!

"I'll go to a church outside the city and become a priest, praying day and night for you and your prince consort! I guarantee you'll never have to see me again!"

Her hand stopped in midair. Her brows drew together, and her eyes narrowed, as if she were attempting to spot the slightest trace of pretense on my face.

Yet, I didn't give her the chance to probe any further. "It's late, Your Highness. I don't want to keep you up, so I'll be taking my leave!"

With that, I scrambled to my feet and bolted out the door. My movements were as nimble as a wild leopard guarding its food.

After leaving the Livingstone residence, I returned to the secluded estate that very night, grabbed the luggage I had packed in advance, and headed straight for the West Gate. The fastest and most luxurious carriage I could afford with 500 dollars was already waiting for me there.

"Let's hit the road! Saltmarsh, here we come!" I sat comfortably inside the spacious carriage, clutching my entire fortune of three million dollars and grinning from ear to ear.

To hell with the grandeur of Bramford and the feuds of the nobility! Making a fortune and retiring early was the true path to a good life.

"Carpe…" Princess Christina was the first to drop her longsword. It hit the ground with a sharp clatter, as if it had shattered the last remnants of her pride. Clutching her bleeding chest, she walked toward me one slow step at a time. The woman who had once been the untouchable Princess Royal suddenly gave way at the knees and dropped straight down before me."I'm not going anywhere." Princess Christina looked up at me with bloodshot eyes that were filled with despair and desperation. "I surrendered my title. I have nothing left. I only have you. So long as you don't drive me away, I'll do whatever you want."I'll guard your estate. I'll dirty my hands for you. I'll work like a dog for you… I don't want a prince consort anymore. "Please just give me a room somewhere on your estate. I just want to see you every day…"Lady Fairfax abandoned her crutch the moment she saw that. She hopped toward me on one leg and threw herself down at my feet with a heavy thud, wrapping both arms t

"Drop the act, Ms. Standish!' Lady Fairfax scoffed as if she had just heard the biggest joke in the world. Pointing at Ms. Standish's nose, she snarled, "Do you think we're unaware of all the filthy things you've done? You bought him with a thousand dollars just to use him as a substitute for Lysander. While looking at his face, you called out another man's name, and you trampled all over his sincere feelings! "Now that he's dumped you, you come running back here pretending you're some devoted lover? You're the worst of us all! You're even worse than me! At least I gave him everything I had!"Ms. Standish's cold and ethereal face instantly drained of all color. The word "substitute" was her deepest sore spot and the stain she could never erase. She abruptly unsheathed the slender sword at her waist and pointed it straight at Lady Fairfax's throat. "You must have a death wish, Lady Fairfax!" "Bring it on! Do you think I'm afraid of you?" Lady Fairfax kicked her crutch aside and

My brows drew together. Claire might have been timid, but she had always followed the rules. She wouldn't drop the ball on such an important occasion unless someone stopped her. I let out a derisive chuckle and casually pulled out a small dagger I kept for protection, gripping it in my hand. "Come on. We're going inside to see what's going on."I adjusted the white-gold crown on my head and strode out of the dressing room. The moment I stepped into the front courtyard, I was so amused by the spectacle before me that I nearly laughed out loud. Well, damn! The estate, which I had spent a fortune to renovate, had descended into an absolute warzone. Princess Christina's Black-Armored Guards had surrounded the entire Pemberton residence so tightly that not even a fly could have gotten through. Perched on the rooftops were a dozen masked assassins in black. Judging by their skill and bearing, they were the highly trained covert revenants from Lady Fairfax's household. Lastly, stat

"Carpe." Ms. Standish took a step forward and bent her knees. As Claire watched in sheer horror, the Grand Tutor—who stood at the pinnacle of power—actually dropped to her knees before me. She lowered herself to the ground and, with trembling hands, took mine in hers, gazing up at me with reverence. Her eyes, which were usually filled with disdain and superiority, were now brimming with tears. Large droplets splashed against the back of my hand, scalding hot. "I was wrong… I was dead wrong. I thought I loved him, but after you left, I looked at that empty residence and realized I simply couldn't live without you! "Without you beside me while I go through my papers, I can't seem to read a thing. Without you sitting beside me counting my money, all the wealth in my family feels utterly meaningless!"Ms. Standish clutched my hand as though it were the last lifeline keeping her afloat. "I won't be the Grand Tutor anymore. I won't concern myself with the Standish family either. Car

The marchioness, who once flitted through suitors and treated men like disposable clothes, was now sobbing like an abandoned stray dog. "I don't want money anymore. I don't want anything else! I only want you!" Clinging to my legs, Lady Fairfax pleaded incoherently, "I was wrong, Carpe. I was just putting on a front because I was afraid that if I fell for you first, you'd have me wrapped around your finger… I was wrong… Please, don't marry her, okay? If… If you insist on marrying her…"Gritting her teeth, a flicker of madness and desperation flashed through her eyes. "Then, I'll be your mistress! Keep me hidden outside. I don't need a title or status. I'll even pay you to keep me! Please don't drive me away…"Her words left me utterly thunderstruck. A high and mighty marchioness was offering to be a mistress to a man from a humble merchant background? Lady Fairfax might not care about her dignity, but I still valued my life. Without a shred of mercy, I pulled my leg free and took

That night, a torrential downpour swept through Saltmarsh. I was sitting in the warm secondary room of my new home, working on my calculator and checking the accounts for the silk shop. All of a sudden, a dull thud echoed from the courtyard, as though something heavy had crashed onto the stone paving. I frowned, opened an umbrella, and pushed open the door with a torch in hand. In the courtyard, rain poured down in sheets. A drenched figure was struggling to pull herself up from the ground. She didn't have an umbrella. Her luxurious suit was soaked through and caked with mud, and her impeccably styled hair now clung loosely to her cheeks in a disheveled mess. There was not a single trace left of the dashing Marchioness of Bramford. It was Lady Fairfax. She appeared to be severely injured. Her right leg was bent at an unnatural angle, and every step made her suck in a sharp breath. When she saw me, she jerked her head up. Those captivating eyes, which were usually brimming with
