Chapter 5

Author: Southern Wind
However, as it turned out, the gigs I could get were not great.

At the fashion show, we discovered that the main model was Julia, and I was just her sidekick.

The show's co-organizer? Julia's sister, Silvia Lawson. They had set me up.

Silvia and I never got along. Ever since I started dating Evan, she had been a thorn in my side. However, with Evan looking out for me, she never got the upper hand.

Now that I was struggling, it was her chance to settle scores.

I sent Wendy to buy some snacks for the show's crew, hoping they would look out for us.

Meanwhile, I rushed to get changed and ready for the dress rehearsal.

Right on cue, trouble found me. The models usually wore high heels provided by the organizers, and we had all given our sizes beforehand. However, the heels they gave me were way too small.

When I asked for another pair, the staff member just sneered at me. "These shoes are made to order. Who do you think you are, asking for a swap? Put them on, or leave right now!"

Shane looked worried.

"I've got a bad feeling about this. Maybe we should just call it off?"

I whispered to calm him down, "Don't worry, I'll be extra careful."

I forced my feet into the shoes, feeling like they were trapped in a vice.

I walked on the runway, trying to ignore the pain. I noticed the stage was much higher than usual.

Julia did not have to practice with us, so it was just me up there, like a lone wolf.

I did not know if it had been on Silvia's orders. I walked back and forth to the music more than ten times, but the coach kept saying something was off and made me start over.

My feet hurt so bad, it felt like they were broken.

On the 20th try, my foot twisted, and I tumbled off the runway, spitting out blood.

The place went wild.

Wolves circled around me, curious about my injuries, but Silvia's presence kept them back.

Shane howled in pain. I tried to comfort him while standing up through the pain. "I was wondering why my nose was stinging. I must have hit it. Someone check if my nose is crooked, will you?"

They all relaxed a bit when they saw I could joke.

Then, my heel snapped, and I fell, but I unexpectedly landed in a warm, familiar hug.

It was Evan. He carried me out of there.

His touch brought my heart back to life, as it did a year ago. However, reality hit me fast.

He put me in the car, sounding distant. "I'll take you to the hospital. Today's show is a big deal for Julia, and I don't want you messing it up."

So, that was what this was about...

Shane whispered weakly, "What are you still waiting for?"

I forced a smile. How long did I have to keep lying to myself?

I bit my tongue to stay awake. "Don't worry about me. I'm okay. I just need to rest a little."

I fought through the pain, dodged his hand, and stumbled out of the car. I walked the other way.

Everything started to blur, but just in time, I saw Wendy rushing toward me. She was like a guardian angel, and I fell into her arms.

"Please, we have to go fast..."

When I woke up again, I was in a hospital bed.

Wendy's eyes were red, and her face was wet with tears as she scolded me, "I knew something was wrong with you, you dummy. Why didn't you tell me you were sick?

"When were you going to tell me!"

She gave me my test results and cried into her hands.

I looked at the report, and the words hurt my eyes. I had an infection in my brain!

My mind just crumbled, and I could not help but follow her out.I fought the urge to run up and hug her and instead followed at a distance, careful not to be seen. When I saw her crouched in a corner, looking so hurt, I wanted nothing more than to bring her back home. However, I could not. I could not risk messing up the important mission we had worked so hard on.I secretly messaged Wendy to come and get Nancy. It was not until I saw Wendy take her away that I could finally relax. I walked back home, feeling empty.Julia looked at me, her face full of worry.

  • What He Came For   Chapter 11

Evan and Julia rushed through the marking ceremony, not even waiting for Silvia to leave the hospital. It was nothing like our big, fancy ceremony. Their marking ceremony was quick and simple, done on some open ground nearby. No crowd of guests or family, not even an elder to lead the ceremony. The only witness was me... and my wolf spirit. After the marking ceremony, Evan looked a lot more at ease. He turned to Julia with a thankful glance. "Julia, I can't thank you enough for helping me with my mission."Julia's smile was warm, but her eyes did not show any love as she looked at Evan. "It was no trouble at all. Don't mention it. Evan, make sure you're good to Nancy, okay? I hope you two will be happy."Evan smiled and spoke the words to break the mark."I, Evan, am ending my mate bond with Julia. Let this connection break, so we're not tied together anymore."Julia gave a small smile. "I accept your rejection."The pain of the broken bond hit deep, and even the toughest werewo

That same night, Evan rushed over to Wendy's place. He looked desperate. "Is Nancy here with you?"Wendy did not even look up as she packed up my things.Evan was in a panic, his hands tightly gripping Wendy's arm as he yelled, not caring how he looked."Tell me, where's Nancy? Did you hide her? Bring her out to see me now!"Wendy's eyes were red as she broke free from him. "She's gone! She passed away this morning! She won't be in your way anymore. Are you happy now?"Evan stood still, his eyes locked on Wendy's, searching for any sign she might be lying. He whispered to himself, "No, she can't be gone. How could she die? Why now? The system didn't say this would happen. It can't be true..."Wendy let out an ivy laugh. "What can't be true? Her grave is in Southborough. If you don't believe me, go see for yourself."Evan's eyes filled with tears, and he ran clumsily toward the graveyard.I trailed behind him, my heart aching as I saw his pain when he reached the graves. He los

I was there at the celebration party. Julia stood on the stage, glowing with happiness. Her life was always meant to sparkle with joy and fulfillment.Since I had made things right for her, I did not have to feel guilty anymore. That was what I told myself. She smiled so brightly, thanking everyone who had helped her, including me.The room was filled with cheers. In the dim light, I saw a familiar shadow. My hands shook as I reached out, and he was finally there to meet me. However, the loud cheers snapped me back to reality. It was not the shadow I saw. It was Evan.He knelt on one knee, holding a shiny diamond ring. He looked at Julia with so much love. "Julia, will you be my Luna?"I clutched my chest, swallowing the pain.Shane's cry echoed in my mind, then faded away.No matter how much I called, I could not feel his presence anymore. I knew my time was up.Wendy saw that I was not okay and rushed to help me. She tried to hide it, but I heard her cry.I did not know wh

When Teresa found me, I was surprised for a second, but then it clicked.Teresa had a nice smile on her face. "Nancy, I wanted to say thank you. If you hadn't been willing to help Silvia, things could have been really bad for her. If you need anything, just ask."Where are your parents? I need to thank them too."I felt a little sad inside."No need to thank me, and I don't have parents. I'm an orphan. I did it for the money."I looked at Teresa, trying to keep my feelings from showing. If I could not see the future, I would never know she was my real mom. I was taken away from her right after I was born. When I said that, the look of dislike in her eyes went away, and she looked at me with so much kindness."I'm sorry for judging you because of what happened with Julia. I don't know why, but talking to you now feels really nice."She sounded so sweet and looked so caring, like a mom should. If she loved Julia, her adopted daughter, that much, would she have loved her own daug

  • What He Came For   Chapter 7

The birthday party that day was all over the news again.Every werewolf was talking about how kind Julia was and how unlucky I seemed.Right then, Silvia had to go to the hospital. She was born with a really weak wolf inside her, but she had been getting better with the doctor's help over the years.Somehow, her wolf just vanished, and the hospital said she was really, really sick.Everyone in our werewolf group was praying for her, except me. I just knew she would not die.I was the one who was really in trouble. My headaches were getting worse, and Shane, my inner wolf, was barely hanging on. I figured it would not be long before I could not feel him at all.I let out a sigh. With the way things were going, I would probably die before I could pay off some big debt I owed. Then, Wendy gave me a bit of hope. She said Evan was looking everywhere and spending a ton of money to find a special blood that could help Silvia. The doctor said if a werewolf of a certain constitution g
