Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
I broke up with Andrew as fast as I could.

I returned every gift he had ever given me, packed my things, and moved out of the apartment we had shared. In the shortest time possible, I cut every tie between us.

However, to him, I was just being dramatic. He kept coming after me, complaining again and again.

"Over one experiment? You're really breaking up with me over that? I already bought the diamond ring. I was going to propose to you, and this is how you treat me?"

Listening to him, I almost laughed.

If Andrew ever found out that the antigen he dismissed so casually could have cured his illness, would he still think I was overreacting?

I stopped responding to him. My paper deadline was coming up fast. Without my experimental data, there was no way I could submit it in time. Without that, my chance to study abroad was gone too.

Just when I felt completely stuck, a top research lab in the country suddenly reached out to me. They said they were very interested in my work. If I joined them, they were willing to offer me three times what I was earning.

I was tempted.

After all, the main reason I had stayed in this lab in the first place was Andrew.

His family had invested in that place and brought in all those professors just to research his condition.

I wanted to help him, but it felt completely unnecessary.

I agreed to meet with them and went back to the lab to organize my previous data.

Before I even reached the door, I heard a familiar voice inside.

It was Sheila, soft and sugary as ever.

"Andrew, even though I accidentally ruined Rose's experiment, I guess I did a good thing in the end. I overheard her talking to a lab overseas. She said her experiment was successful and that she'd be going abroad soon.

"She's about to get married, yet she's still planning to leave. Andrew, it sounds like she's already tired of you being sick and wants to dump you."

Andrew's face darkened. He had clearly taken her words to heart.

Sheila continued, her voice sweet and coaxing.

"Now that the experiment is gone, she can't leave anymore, so why don't you ask the institute to give that study abroad spot to me instead?

"That way, Rose will stay and marry you like she's supposed to, and I can come back to visit you often… You know, help with your loneliness."

As she spoke, her slender fingers slowly traced upward between his legs, the meaning obvious.

Andrew let out a low sound. While enjoying it, he seemed to make up his mind.

Suddenly, he stood up, pinned Sheila down on the lab table, and lifted her skirt, his hand sliding underneath. His voice turned sharp, almost like he was venting something.

"Rose wants to leave me? Not happening. Be good to me, sweetheart. The study abroad spot will be yours."

What followed was the disgusting sound of them entangled together.

In that moment, everything finally clicked.

Andrew had a hand in destroying my experiment too.

He could not stand the idea of me achieving something greater, of me stepping onto a bigger stage. So, he chose the cruelest way possible to keep me.

However, what he never expected was that what he destroyed was not just my experiment.

It was his only chance at being cured.

I was going to tell him everything.

After several rounds of emergency treatment, Andrew's condition only kept getting worse. He wanted to see me. He called again and again, but I never picked up.In the end, his mother came to find me. She cried as she begged me to visit him. That was the only reason I went. When I walked into the hospital room, I almost did not recognize him.The man lying in that bed had been completely worn down by illness. However, the moment he saw me, his eyes lit up."Rose, I knew you'd come save me. About that experiment… If you succeeded once, you can do it again, right? There's still hope for me… Right?"I looked into his eyes.Even though I did not want to say it, I told him the truth."It won't work again. Andrew, over the past year, I've tried to recreate that experiment countless times. It has never succeeded again."Tens of thousands of trials, and only that one worked. I still don't know why. Later, I figured… Maybe it was because, back then, I loved you so much that even God was

Since when did I even have a boyfriend?I had to admit, having Jack around worked out pretty well. With him standing in the way, Andrew stopped showing up to harass me.I threw myself back into my research. Under Clarence's guidance, I started diving deeper, pushing into more advanced and specialized areas.During that time, Andrew came looking for me more times than I could count. At first, he kept begging to get back together.Later, he even offered money, saying he wanted to buy my research.Clarence shut that down immediately."Our lab exists for patients. Not to be controlled by capital," he told Andrew flatly.I thought that would be the end of it.I was wrong. One evening, on my way home from work, a car suddenly came speeding straight toward me.For a split second, I froze. Then, I recognized the driver. It was Sheila. Her face was twisted, her eyes wild as she screamed at me like a madwoman."It's all your fault! You ruined everything for me!I got kicked out of

Our lab took the top honor. Everyone went out to celebrate, including Clarence's ridiculously rich son, Jack Harris. He pulled up to the restaurant in a Rolls-Royce. When it came time to pay, he looked completely speechless."Dad, I get that you want me to fully fund your lab, but now, I'm supposed to pay for your team dinners too?"Clarence, the most cheerful old man alive, just chuckled."Don't be so stingy about money, son. It's not like I'm making you pay for nothing.""Oh? Then, come up with a contract."Clearly not interested in putting together any kind of contract, Clarence's eyes lit up. He suddenly pushed me forward like he had just struck gold."How about I introduce you to a girlfriend instead? Rose is the prettiest and most promising girl in our lab. Introducing her to you is a great deal, isn't it?"Jack looked at me. His sharp, slightly upturned eyes filled with amusement as he smirked."Yeah. I'm definitely the one coming out ahead."Just like that, I was some

Clarence stepped up and pulled up the presentation. Right in front of everyone, he began walking through our lab's recent breakthroughs. When he reached the part about a major advance in autoimmune diseases, Andrew could not sit still anymore. His whole expression changed. He stared at Clarence like his life depended on it.The second the presentation ended, he rushed forward."Professor Harris, who conducted your lab's immunology research? If you've already made progress in immune system treatments, then lupus…""I completed the lupus research half a year ago."I cut Andrew off before he could finish. The room went quiet.Andrew's face darkened. He shot me a sharp, disbelieving look."What nonsense are you talking about? Half a year ago, you were still working in the lab I funded, and your experimental antigen was already…"He stopped mid-sentence. Something clicked. Slowly, he turned his head and glanced at Sheila.Sheila's face shifted instantly. A flicker of panic crosse

As the whispers spread through the room, Sheila's face went completely pale. She lunged forward, snatched the remote from my hand, and shut off the screen in a panic. "This is fake! Rose made it up to frame me!"Andrew clenched his teeth and glared at me. "The cameras were turned off, so how did you…"I stepped closer and locked eyes with him, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "That's because I turned them back on. Andrew, if you cheated, then own up to it. Is that so hard? You're out here talking about marrying me while keeping Sheila on the side. With your condition, can you even handle that?"A few of the people around us could not help it. They almost laughed. Everyone could tell exactly what I was implying.Andrew's face turned a dark shade of green. He ground out his words."Fine. I cheated on you with Sheila, and I'm going to marry her. So what?"You always act like you're above everyone. Why should I stay loyal to you? You're not worth it. I'm seriously ill, and all you

I almost charged in right then and there to expose everything. However, just as I was about to move, my phone lit up. It was an email from Professor Clarence Harris, the founder of that top-tier lab.In the message, he carefully pointed out the weak spots in my experiment, as well as a few areas where my conclusions were slightly off. He even adjusted several sets of my data and gave suggestions based on the projected results.[Actually, your research has strong potential in other autoimmune diseases. However, it seems you've been focusing only on treating lupus, which made you overlook the successful parts and valid data you already have.]I stared at the screen, and something inside me snapped into place. He was right. Why was I so fixated on lupus? My research was already strong enough to treat other autoimmune diseases. However, for the sake of one person, I had trapped myself in that single direction for three whole years. In the end, what did I get?Schemes. Betrayal.I
