Chapter 3

Author: Fishy Peach
I had nothing left.

You blamed me for taking everything from Victor in the womb and told me more times than I could count that I should die.

Now I had finally returned that life to you.

When Victor went home, my parents were waiting in the living room with a hot dinner already laid out.

I thought of myself again before I could stop it.

I had died without ever tasting a meal my parents cooked especially for me.

I laughed until I started crying, watching the three of them sit together like a complete family while grief twisted through me.

Only after dinner did my parents remember I existed, and even then it was casual.

"Where is Julian? He doesn't even bother coming home. Always making trouble."

Victor answered without interest.

"Who knows?"

My mother's carefully made-up face tightened with irritation.

"He called me more than ten times. I was playing cards. I didn't have time to deal with him."

Victor laughed along with her. She tapped his forehead affectionately, and I couldn't see the slightest guilt in his eyes.

I didn't know when my spirit might vanish, so when my parents went to bed, I simply stayed on the couch all night.

My spirit followed Victor to a private racing club and then to a luxury marina, places I had never once been allowed to enjoy.

Victor moved through the crowd easily, basking in his friends' praise, and never once remembered the brother he had locked in the basement.

Even as a ghost, I could still feel how completely I didn't belong in his world.

We had grown up in the same family, yet I had always been no more than dust beneath everyone else's feet.

Three days later, in the middle of his friends' laughter, Victor finally remembered me.

Victor drove alone to the lake house and knocked mockingly on the basement door.

"Julian, how was it? Have fun?"

Silence answered him.

He cursed, flicked away his cigarette, and unlocked the basement.

Victor always said he liked watching me beg and lower myself like a dog. When he opened the door, that same ugly anticipation was still in his eyes.

But in the absolute silence, the loudest sound became the key slipping from his hand and striking the floor.

He staggered toward my body, still swearing at me, until his hand touched skin that had gone cold and begun to reek.

His face was so ugly in that moment.

Victor's face turned gray as he checked for breathing and finally understood I was really dead. Then he paced through the empty lake house, shouting curses at no one.

When my mother called, he answered stiffly and forced out a few ordinary replies.

She was complaining that I still had not come home.

Beside my body, Victor's lips trembled.

"Mom, why do you keep bringing him up?"

After the call ended, Victor searched online for ways to get rid of a body.

He then hid my body in his car and dumped it in a river.

My spirit watched my mother play cards and attend gatherings until, more than a week later, my body was recovered.

Police called her and said they had found her son's remains.

"What are you talking about? Julian was healthier than anyone. I'd die before he ever would."

After she hung up, I thought I saw her hand tremble.

I laughed bitterly and told myself she was probably only angry. It was easier than believing she might actually be grieving for me.

But the lights in my parents' bedroom stayed on the entire night.

Early the next morning they left before Victor could even finish calling after them.

I tried to follow them, but my spirit couldn't move far from Victor.

Victor had not looked this weak in years. He sat pale and silent in his room.

He didn't eat all day. I couldn't tell whether he feared my parents discovering what he had done or whether guilt had finally reached him.

Cigarette ends filled the ashtray. When my parents came home with red eyes, Victor rushed toward them nervously.

"Mom... Dad..."

He reached for my mother's arm, but she tore herself away.

It was the first time in my life - or death - that my parents ignored Victor because of me.

If I had seen that while I was alive, I probably would have cried from happiness.

But I was already dead. By the time my parents finally looked at me, all that remained was a body marked by years of suffering.

Three days later, Silas returned carrying ritual items. While my parents spoke to him, his eyes kept settling on me.That was when I finally knew the wave he had given on his last visit had not been my imagination. He really could see me.Silas agreed to perform a blessing. Then he asked my parents to leave the room so he could speak to me alone."Julian, you're still here because something in you hasn't let go. I can grant one request within my ability. I could let your parents speak with you. Do you want that?""Why would you help me?"Silas sighed."Because there's a debt still open."Abel, my teacher, took money years ago to bind your fate to Victor's. He never meant to kill you. The unusually strong body you were born with came from the good you did in the life before this one."Without what was taken from you, Victor wouldn't have lived past sixteen."He never imagined your family would grind you down until you died. He passed away three years ago still carrying the reg

After police recovered data from the old phone Victor had discarded and updated my parents on the case, I tried leaving Victor's side to follow them and discovered, to my surprise, that I finally could.Back home, my parents took out my phone with shaking hands. It had originally been one of Victor's castoff phones. He replaced devices constantly, but to me it had always worked just fine.My notes app contained a diary.I had written down only the happy moments because they were rare enough to treasure, and I often reread them when the painful days became too heavy.April 2: Dad tossed me his lighter and told me to light his cigarette. He never asked for it back, so I'm pretending it was a gift.June 10: It was really hot today. Mom bought dessert for everyone in the house. I got one too.November 15: My body hurt badly today, but just when Victor was about to torment me, Mom and Dad called him away. I'm happy. My mother read every line again and again. Then she opened my messa

"That kidney came from Julian. You killed Julian. How can you keep carrying part of him inside you?"Julian died with his body already broken because of us. Why did we ever take his kidney? We had money. We could have found another match."Victor, you owe Julian too."My mother was still crying, but the words made Victor go cold. For the first time, the arrogant confidence fell away completely. He began explaining himself in a panic."Mom, I didn't mean to kill him. Dad, believe me. It wasn't my fault. If he'd told us how sick he was, I never would have accidentally..."The operating-room doors shut on the rest of his excuses.Outside, my parents sat staring at my photograph.I didn't know what they were thinking. Maybe they were finally asking themselves what might have happened if they had treated me like a son while I was alive. If they had cared even a little more, perhaps I would not have died.Eventually the surgical lights went dark. My parents ignored Victor when he

My father said the charitable gift was meant to create something good in my name and wished me peace in whatever life came next. But to me, the only thing worth calling good would be watching the people who caused my death answer for it.Victor watched the entire funeral with a cold expression. Not long after the service, police sent my parents a video recovered during the investigation. It showed Victor's vehicle at the location where my body had been abandoned. The image was blurry and appeared to have come from another person's recording. The detective asked whether they recognized anything useful.I watched my mother deny knowing anything over the phone, even though her hand shook until my father covered it with his own.Victor had changed vehicles, altered identifying details, and covered his face, but after loving him for twenty years, could my parents really fail to recognize him?I expected them to arrange for Victor to flee.Instead, they behaved as though nothing ha

"The fact that he survived to nineteen after everything you did is the miracle.""What are you saying?"Silas knocked my father's raised hand aside before he could strike him."I'm saying you wore Julian down until there was almost nothing left."Then Silas turned and left, lifting one hand behind him in a gesture that seemed strangely directed toward me.My mother covered her face and sobbed, then ran barefoot into my bedroom. The room looked exactly as it had while I was alive.Victor had a bedroom my parents had personally designed and decorated. Once, I had hugged my mother's leg and begged her to make mine beautiful too, only for her to push me away. Now she moved through my worn little room inch by inch, touching the frayed bedsheets while tears soaked into the fabric."Julian..."I couldn't understand why she kept crying when she had never seemed to like me at all.She stayed in the room for a long time, sitting at my desk, opening the books I had read, holding the pe

My mother became completely quiet. She sat on the couch without even removing her heels, pulled my medical report from her bag with trembling hands, covered her face, and sobbed. My father, who had always been cold toward me, smoked in silence, one cigarette after another.Victor could not stand the atmosphere and finally shouted."Mom, Dad, Julian is dead. So what? Didn't you always say he was useless anyway? Why are you acting like this now?"Am I not your son anymore just because Julian is gone?""You monster!"My father struck Victor across the face and pointed at him."He was your brother. Victor, do you have any conscience at all? He was your brother."Victor laughed coldly, wiped the blood from his mouth, and slammed his bedroom door hard enough to shake the walls. My mother stared at the medical report, her voice trembling."Kidney failure... Marcus, was it because we made him give Victor that kidney? Julian was always so healthy. How could he have died?"My father
