Chapter 2

Author: Old Acquaintance
Everyone froze when they saw the marriage certificate, staring like they couldn't believe it.

I didn't waste a second. I scooped Heidi up from the ground, ready to get her out of there.

I barely made it a few steps before someone blocked my way.

A man stepped out of a black luxury car, dressed head to toe in designer, a heavy watch catching the light as he moved.

"You've got some nerve, causing trouble right outside my house," he said coldly.

The second I saw his face, I recognized him.

He was the student Stella and I had sponsored years ago. Back then, when we went back to our old school for an event, he had been so thin that he looked like he might collapse. He had groveled before us at the school gate, begging us to help him.

He said his parents had sold everything just to get him through high school, and they couldn't afford college. He kept asking us to give him a chance.

Stella had looked at him with open disgust.

"In this day and age, anyone can make money if they try," she'd said. "Why grovel and pressure people into supporting you?"

And now, the same person she once looked down on was standing in our house, acting like he owned the place and hurting our daughter.

My jaw tightened until it hurt.

The man didn't seem to recognize me. His eyes went straight to Heidi in my arms, something dark flashing across his face.

"Get down on your own," he said flatly. "Or…"

He didn't even finish.

Heidi started shaking violently, then scrambled out of my arms and dropped to the floor, curling in on herself.

My eyes burned.

The man smiled, satisfied, then turned to the maids.

"What's going on?" he asked. "It's Angela's birthday. Is this how you're handling things?"

The maids rushed to explain.

"He forced his way in," one said quickly. "He smashed Ms. Angela's cake and ruined her dress. He even claimed he's Ms. Dixon's husband. He showed a marriage certificate, but we don't know if it's real."

The man's expression went cold. He slapped the maid across the face without hesitation.

"Of course it's fake," he said. "I'm Stella's husband. Don't you people know that?"

Then he looked at the guards.

"Throw him out. Send him to a psych ward," he said. "As for that girl… I'll make sure she pays for seducing men here."

Before I could react, he kicked Heidi hard, sending her tumbling across the ground.

The maids and guards grabbed ropes and closed in on me, ready to send me to the psych ward.

"Don't touch me!" I said sharply. "I'm not just Stella's legal husband. I'm part of a classified government research team. You lay a finger on me, and you'll regret it!"

At the same time, I pulled out my phone and sent out a distress message to Stella and the Federal Security Agency.

The Agency replied almost immediately.

But Stella didn't.

I tried to call her, but the man reacted fast. He snatched my phone and smashed it on the ground.

I didn't hold back. I drove my fist straight into his face.

He staggered back, furious.

"You're done!" he snapped. "You think you can touch me? My wife won't let you off the hook!"

He pulled out his phone and made a call.

The line connected quickly.

A familiar and warm voice came through, filled with affection.

"Hey, honey, you and Angela go ahead and have some cake. I'll be there soon. I'm picking out a gift right now. I have a big surprise for both of you tonight."

It was almost laughable. Even now, Stella still thought I would take her side?"Stella, you really think after everything you've done, I'd still protect you?" I said. "You cheated on me, abused my daughter for a whole year, and had me beaten half to death. What, you think you're the center of the universe, and everything revolves around you?"Listen carefully. I'm not just having you arrested. I'm charging you with attempted murder. You can rot in prison for the rest of your life!"She staggered like she couldn't stay on her feet, then tried to fall back on old emotions."John, you can't do this to me! We loved each other for so many years. I gave you a daughter. Everything I did was for the company. Even if I don't deserve all the credit, I've worked really hard for it."I let out a cold laugh."The company only got where it is because of me," I said. "The resources, the connections, all of it came through me. And what did you do? You handed all the credit to some guy you pick

Robert spoke like he meant every word, but his hand pressed hard against the wound on my arm.Pain ripped through me. I couldn't stop myself from shoving him away.I hadn't used much force, but he fell hard anyway, hitting the ground with a loud thud. His eyes reddened instantly, his voice turning pitiful."I-I was just trying to help. Why did you do that?"Stella's face went cold. She stepped forward and slapped me across the face. "John, what's wrong with you? Robert was thinking about you, and you pushed him? Apologize to him right now. If you don't, I'm done with you!"I spat on the ground."The two of you are disgusting," I said. "You're lucky I haven't killed you already. And you want me to apologize? Keep dreaming!"I pointed straight at her."Get this through your head. I'm the one who's done with you."Then I looked down at the girl in my arms, barely conscious."Heidi, don't fall asleep. Stay with me. I'm taking you to the hospital."The words had barely left my

"John…?"Stella froze, disbelief all over her face."Wait… Didn't you say the project would take two years? Why are you back early? Why didn't you tell me? I would've picked you up at the airport."I looked at her, my voice cold."If I hadn't come back early, how would I have seen all this?" I said. "You let your lover walk right into our home and do whatever he wants to our daughter. Stella, where the hell is your conscience?"She rushed to explain, words spilling out fast."You've got it wrong! Robert isn't my lover. He's the student we sponsored together, remember? After he graduated, he couldn't find a job, and he's a single dad raising his daughter alone. I couldn't just leave him out on the street, so I brought them here."And no one's abusing Heidi. After you left, she came down with a serious illness. I had no choice but to keep her restrained. Those injuries… She did those to herself when she had episodes. It has nothing to do with Robert."I actually laughed. So in h

It had only been a year, but Stella's presence felt even sharper now. The maids and guards all lowered their heads the moment she stepped in, quiet and respectful.Stella looked pleased. Carrying a pile of gifts, she hurried into the yard. The second she saw the bruise on Robert's face, her expression turned cold. She shot an angry look at the guards and maids."This is how you protect my family?"Robert covered his face, his eyes red, his voice full of grievance."It's not their fault. That lunatic barged in and started hitting me, saying he's your legal husband. Stella, you need to have my back on this.He glanced toward Heidi."And your daughter's taking his side. She didn't help me at all. You need to teach her a lesson."I lay on the ground, barely conscious. My skin was torn open, and even my face had taken a few lashes. Blood covered everything. I couldn't even speak.Heidi was worse. She kept coughing up blood, her face pale like she might stop breathing any second.A

I knew that voice instantly.I turned my head, and there she was.Chloe Dixon, my sister-in-law.Hope hit me all at once. I rushed to speak."Chloe, you're finally here. Tell them to let Heidi and me go."She didn't even look at me. Instead, she walked straight past me, her face full of concern as she went to Robert and the girl in his arms."Are you two okay?" she asked, her voice tight with worry. "Stella's useless. She can't even protect her own husband and daughter. Don't worry, I'm here now. No one's going to hurt you again."One of the maids jumped in right away."Mr. Simonds just got punched by him," she said. "His lip's bleeding. We don't know if there'll be any lasting damage."Chloe's expression hardened with anger and concern. She turned and slapped me across the face twice."You piece of trash!" she snapped. "Who told you to lay a hand on Robert? Do you have any idea how important he is in this family? If anything happens to him, what are you going to use to make

Robert Simonds shot me a smug look, then turned soft and aggrieved as he spoke into the phone."Babe, forget the gift. Just come home, okay? Some guy showed up, claiming he's your husband. He even hit Angela and me. He messed up my face."The voice on the other end turned sharp with panic."Don't listen to him. You're my only husband. And how dare he hurt you and Angela! He's asking for it. Have the guards grab him and lock him in the basement. I'll deal with him when I get back.""Okay," he said sweetly, dragging it out, then he tossed in a few more soft, clingy words before hanging up.My teeth ground together so hard that my jaw ached. In my head, I was already cursing Stella a thousand times over.Everything the Dixons had now came from the connections and influence I had built over the years. Back when she had nothing, she swore she would love me forever, that she would always stand by me.Yet the first thing she did after getting rich was take a lover. All those promises
