The atmosphere in the safehouse was calm.

Morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting warm, golden designs on the walls. It was one of those rare mornings when everything felt peaceful. Nora was at the dining table, busy with her colored pencils and humming a gentle melody. Meanwhile, Amelia sat nearby, her coffee neglected in her hand, watching the steam rise like signals from a different world.

The events of the previous night were still fresh in her mind—the soothing sound of Adrian’s voice, the comforting warmth of his shoulder close to hers, and the silence that felt more meaningful than words. It frightened her how effortlessly she could slip into that space with him, yet it also brought her a sense of comfort.

Just as she was starting to unwind, there was a knock.

Not loud, but deliberate.

Adrian’s boots shuffled across the hardwood floor as he made his way to the door. "I’ll get it."

Amelia barely managed to nod before the door swung open, and she froze.

  • What the Heart didn't Know   The Calm Before

(POV: Adrian)"The city outside was unusually quiet. The rain from last night had washed the skyline clean, leaving behind a sky so pale and soft it looked almost like a dream. The safehouse was in a quieter part of town, surrounded by trees that whispered instead of making a racket. For the first time in ages, Adrian didn’t feel the usual weight of urgency sitting on his shoulders.Inside, the house was peaceful. Amelia and Nora were still snoozing.Adrian leaned by the kitchen window, nursing a cup of black coffee that had gone cold ages ago. His mind drifted back to the previous night, remembering how Amelia had broken down in his arms, the quiver in her voice when she whispered she might be the issue. He hadn’t really known what to say then. But he held her close. And maybe, just maybe, that was enough for that night.A soft sound pulled him back, and he turned around. It was Amelia. She stood barefoot in the doorway, wearing one of his old T-shirts and pajama pants. Her hair was

  • What the Heart didn't Know   You can't save me from myself

The rain gently tapped against the windows, just a calming beat in the background. The storm from last night had blown over, but inside Amelia, things were still a bit chaotic. The walls of the new safehouse were stark white, quiet, maybe too quiet. It didn’t feel like home. Honestly, nothing had felt like home for ages.Adrian was somewhere in the kitchen, making sure the locks were secure again. He hadn’t slept much, and she could see it in the way his shoulders hung a bit lower today and how tense his jaw was when he thought no one was watching. Nora was finally snoozing on the couch, curled up with her stuffed rabbit. Her fever had dropped, but it had shaken Amelia more than she wanted to admit. Leaning by the window, she wrapped her arms around herself. Outside, everything looked normal, cars were driving by, and people were strolling along. But inside her head, the world felt different, and this time, she wasn’t sure if she could keep up.“You good?” Adrian asked softly.“Do yo

  • What the Heart didn't Know   The man in the shadows

Adrian's POVThe storm had blown over, but you could still feel its vibe hanging around. The fireplace still had a hint of woodsmoke in the air. The wine glasses were left untouched from the night before, half-filled and still warm to the touch. Adrian hadn’t really moved for hours. He was perched on the edge of the couch, one hand casually resting across his lap while the other was close to Amelia's head as she curled up beside him. He knew she hadn’t meant to doze off, especially not in his arms, but she did, and it felt right.Amelia hadn’t meant to fall asleep. He could sense the tension still hanging onto her even in her sleep. Her fingers would twitch every now and then, and her breathing was shallow and a bit uneasy. Not a word was exchanged after the kiss—not when she pulled away, and not when he quietly pulled her back so she wouldn’t have to be alone. He didn’t bother trying to analyze what had just happened. Some moments were just too raw for logic. It was all about the hea

  • What the Heart didn't Know   You want me to stay

The storm blew in fast, thick clouds swallowing the sky while thunder rumbled overhead. The penthouse windows shook in the wind, and the lights flickered once, twice, before settling back into a cozy glow. Amelia stood in the living room, hugging herself tight as the wild weather matched her tumultuous feelings—chaotic, loud, and impossible to ignore.Adrian had just tucked Nora into bed when he heard his own soft footsteps approaching. He didn’t say anything as he walked in—just glanced at her with a quiet, unreadable look before heading to the kitchen. "Want anything?" he asked softly. "I'll have what you're having," Amelia replied. She watched him move through the shadows, calm and steady, and it made her chest tighten. The way he moved, how his long-sleeve shirt hugged his arms—what would it feel like to be wrapped up in those arms? But as soon as that thought crossed her mind, she shook it off. She can’t be thinking about him... Not like that. He came back with two gl

  • What the Heart didn't Know   Feels like home

Adrian wasn’t really accustomed to this kind of quiet. It wasn’t the heavy kind that felt like a warning; instead, it wrapped around the room like a cozy blanket. It was the first time Amelia had left him alone with Nora for more than an hour. She had to go meet her lawyers to finalize some stuff for the custody case, barely making eye contact as she handed him Nora’s lunch schedule and allergy notes.“She likes her crusts cut off,” Amelia had said flatly, steering clear of his gaze. “And broccoli? Absolutely not. Don’t let her convince you to give her candy.”He nodded, taking the paper from her, feeling that invisible barrier still looming between them after their last chat. He had offered to go with her, but as usual, she shot him down and stormed out after dropping off the instructions for feeding Nora.He was getting tired of this back and forth, but he got that she needed her space. Still, how long could he hold on? She was pulling away once more, and he couldn’t really blame he
