Chapter 3

Autor: Spring Grass
Chase had promised that I would be the person he cherished most in the entire world, and that he would spend the rest of his life protecting and treasuring me.

And for a while, he really did keep that promise.

With his talent and determination, he developed a revolutionary neural-interface chip the year he graduated from college. It could manipulate and regulate a person's senses and emotions at will.

By pairing two people through the chip, it could even synchronize their sensations and emotions—or transfer one's physical pain to the other.

Chase told me that was exactly why he had created it. He wanted to take all my pain and negative emotions away from me, swearing he'd protect me for the rest of his life. If he ever broke that promise, the chip would punish him.

But ironically, the very chip created to carry his promise would eventually become the source of my deepest despair and suffering.

I wiped my face and slowly made my way downstairs to the storage room. I carried the two heavy urns out of the house.

The beach was deserted in the hours before dawn.

I knelt on the damp sand and scattered my parents' ashes across the shimmering surface of the sea.

As I watched the horizon brighten, I remembered the day Chase had confessed his love to me for the first time. He had stood on this very beach and written a promise in the sand.

"I will never let you down, Renee."

Just then, my phone suddenly vibrated. I glanced at it and found a message from Mr. Walsh.

"I've taken care of the paperwork. Here's the soft copy of the transfer agreement. If everything looks good, sign it and send it back."

Without hesitation, I signed the agreement and sent it back.

The tide washed away the footprints in the sand, just as Chase's promise had vanished along with everything else.

There was nothing left for me to hold on to.

A few days later, I left the office late at night after finishing the handover.

As I passed a bakery on the corner, I suddenly remembered that it was my birthday. I then bought myself a tiny cream cake, barely bigger than my palm.

But when I got home, I stopped dead in my tracks.

The living room was covered in ribbons and balloons, and Chase was standing on a ladder, hanging the last banner.

My heart skipped a beat. Could it be that he actually remembered my birthday?

"What are you standing there for?" Chase called without turning around. "Come give me a hand. Jo's going to be here any minute."

Then I saw what was written on the cake.

It had nothing to do with my birthday—it was just to celebrate Joanna's recovery and discharge from the hospital.

My fingers tightened around the tiny cake in the plastic bag, crumpling the box.

So this was what Chase had been planning all along. I'd only been fooling myself.

In the four years since Joanna came back, Chase hadn't spent a single birthday with me. He barely acknowledged our anniversaries either. He seemed to have pushed anything that had to do with me into the recesses of his mind.

And yet, after everything, I'd actually entertained the ridiculous thought that he might have changed.

"How pathetic," I silently thought to myself.

I ignored him and turned toward the stairs.

But Chase jumped down the ladder and called after me, his brow furrowed.

"Didn't you hear me?" he yelled. "Today marks the 67th day Jo's been in the hospital. Come help me hang this banner. I want to surprise her."

"You really do have a good memory," I said with a bitter laugh.

He couldn't remember my birthday, yet somehow he could remember exactly how many days Joanna had spent in the hospital during her pregnancy.

Chase looked puzzled.

Then his eyes fell on the crumpled plastic bag in my hand, the bakery's logo printed across the front. Only then did he realize what I meant.

The tips of his ears turned red.

"I've just been busy lately," he explained, clearing his throat awkwardly. "And with everything going on with Jo, it slipped my mind that today was…"

He hesitated.

"Why don't we celebrate together? I have extra candles."

  • When Fairness Isn't So Fair After All   Chapter 10

Within six months, Chase's life completely fell apart.First, Joanna disappeared with the child, taking more than half of his fortune with her. Then everything collapsed. The company's core patents were stolen, its cash flow dried up, and creditors came knocking one after another. The once-celebrated rising star of the tech world became a pariah almost overnight, hated by everyone who knew his name. Chase sold his luxury home and cars, but even that barely made a dent in his mountain of debt. Eventually, the courts seized even his identification documents, leaving him unable to buy a train ticket or travel anywhere legally. Desperate to escape his creditors, he stowed away on a fishing vessel headed overseas. In the stinking hold, he worked 18 hours a day, the fishing nets slicing his hand until they were raw and bloody. But at least he had a place to sleep, food to eat, and a meager wage. …Five years passed in the blink of an eye. The confidence and swagger Chase h

Chase's jaw went slack as he stared at the woman in disbelief. Was this really the same Joanna he remembered—the sweet, innocent woman who had once seemed so delicate and pure? She crossed one leg over the other, a cigarette dangling between her fingers. "Come on, you guys can't tell I've had a kid, can you?" she asked smugly, showing off to the men around her. "Of course not!" one of the men immediately flattered her. "With that figure and that face, I'd believe you were 20."Joanna's ego was thoroughly stroked, and she giggled. "After all, I didn't suffer at all," she said. "I barely felt a thing from pregnancy through childbirth. I was in better shape than most women even after having a baby.""Damn, you really are something," another man chimed in, eager to flatter her. "I heard you used to get pretty wild with a bunch of guys from different countries."Good thing the baby came out looking like a local, though. Otherwise, how could you have gotten Chase to raise someone

It took less than ten seconds for Chase to reach his breaking point. His face had gone deathly pale, tears and snot streaking down his cheeks. When the pain finally stopped, he was too exhausted to even speak. He curled up on the operating table, gasping for breath. He had even lost control of his bladder. "I-It was only ten seconds," he whispered shakily to himself. "And I made Renee endure that kind of agony for hours…"After experiencing everything I had gone through, Chase finally understood why I'd left him. He staggered to his feet and hurried home without even bothering to clean himself up.The moment he saw the empty house, he suddenly began slapping himself across the face like a madman. "I'm a fucking bastard. I'm worse than an animal!" he screamed at the empty room. "Renee, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I betrayed you… I threw away everything you gave me!"Tears blurred his vision. The very chip that had been designed to protect me had ultimately become a tool for

The dead tone of the disconnected call echoed in his ear as Chase gripped his phone, his hand trembling slightly. He sat motionless on the couch, Mr. Walsh's cutting remark replaying over and over in his mind. Outside, dusk slowly settled over the city. As Chase stared at the empty living room, a realization suddenly dawned on him. This time, I might really never come back. He slowly picked up the ring, the metal cold and painfully real beneath his fingertips. He remembered proposing to me on the beach seven years ago, and how happy I'd looked as I slipped the ring onto my finger. Now, it was the only thing I'd left behind. "How did it come to this?" Chase murmured. "Renee… did I really break your heart?"…"Mr. Russell, are you sure you want to go through with this?" the researcher asked, looking concerned. "The empathic link will transmit everything the other person feels, including—""Enough," Chase cut him off coldly. "Start now. I need to know exactly what Renee w

"Didn't you notice she left with a suitcase today?" Chase snapped, his voice rising. "Why didn't you tell me?""I-I didn't think much about it," Annie stammered. "Ms. Shaw was dressed so casually today, so I assumed the suitcase had the outfit she planned to change into for the wedding."Her answer did nothing to ease Chase's frustration. He dropped heavily onto the couch, raking his fingers through his hair as he teetered on the edge of losing control. "Renee…" he gritted out. "Where the hell did you go?"Then, as if a thought had suddenly struck him, he hurriedly pulled out his phone and called my office. When someone answered, he forced himself to sound calm. "Hello? May I know if Renee Shaw is still employed there?" he asked tentatively. "Has she submitted her resignation or anything like that?"A moment later, he heard the faint tapping of a keyboard on the other end. "Our records show that Ms. Shaw is still an employee here. She did take two weeks of leave recently, tho

At the wedding, Chase kept glancing at the clock on the wall. The speeches were nearly over, yet the seat reserved for me remained empty. "Mr. Russell," the emcee called cautiously. "Perhaps we should—""Five more minutes!" Chase snapped through clenched teeth, barely managing to hide his anger. By then, the guests had started whispering among themselves. "Didn't they say Mr. Russell's ex-girlfriend was coming to give the newlyweds her blessing? It's getting late, and there's still no sign of her. Looks like he hasn't managed to sort things out with her after all.""I heard they didn't exactly end things on good terms. He got another woman pregnant. Who could blame her for refusing to show up and give them her blessing?"With no other choice, Chase forced himself to signal for the ceremony to continue, his face dark with anger. For the rest of the ceremony, his eyes kept drifting toward the entrance. But even after the reception ended, I never appeared. …"Renee, how
