The rooftop was no longer a glittering jewel it was a trap.

Grace barely had time to register the two men striding across the terrace before Damien stepped in front of her. One smooth motion, no hesitation. His hand closed around her wrist, guiding her behind him, his body forming a wall between her and the danger.

“Stay low,” he murmured, voice steady, calm too calm.

The men didn’t shout or posture. They didn’t need to. Their eyes were fixed on Damien like wolves spotting prey. One reached inside his jacket.

Grace’s heart lurched. A gun.

The crack split the night like thunder. Screams erupted around them as diners ducked under tables, glass shattered, the violinist dropped his bow with a clatter.

But Damien didn’t flinch. In one motion he shoved Grace to the ground, pressing her behind the cover of an overturned table.

“Don’t move,” he ordered.

Her breath came in short, panicked bursts. She wanted to argue, to demand answers, but the look in his eyes hard, sharp, unyielding froze her

The curtains stayed drawn for hours after Marcus’s message, shutting out the dawn, shutting out the world. Grace sat curled on the leather couch in Damien’s office, her phone still on the table like a venomous snake she didn’t dare touch.Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it the photo of herself on the balcony, the words beneath it. You look just like him when you’re afraid. Her stomach clenched. Marcus wasn’t just threatening her. He was playing with her mind, stitching his shadow into her thoughts, twisting fear into every breath she took.Damien paced the room like a predator in a cage. His guards had swept the grounds three times already, but the truth was unbearable: Marcus had gotten close enough to take that photo. Close enough to see her fear. And if he could do it once, he could do it again.“You’re not leaving this house,” Damien said finally, his voice low, final.Grace’s head snapped up. “Excuse me?”“You heard me.” He stopped pacing, turning to her with eyes like sh

The night after the photo arrived, sleep was a stranger to Grace. Every creak of the old mansion, every whisper of wind against the window made her heart race. She had grown used to danger lurking outside, but now it felt like danger was inside her skin.By dawn, she dragged herself to Damien’s office, only to find him already there, suit jacket discarded, sleeves rolled up, and a glass of whiskey untouched on the desk. His eyes were fixed on a single file.“Marcus Hale,” he said without looking up. The name came out like venom.Grace froze. She had heard the name before, whispered once by Damien in his sleep. Now, hearing it in the open, attached to the threat looming over them, made her stomach twist.“Who is he?” she asked, though part of her wasn’t sure she wanted the answer.Damien’s jaw flexed. “He used to be my brother.”Grace blinked. “Your… brother?”“Not by blood,” Damien clarified. He leaned back, eyes haunted by memories he usually buried. “But we grew up together. We were

The city never slept, but Damien’s penthouse was cloaked in an unnatural silence. Not the comfortable hush of midnight, but the brittle quiet of a storm waiting to break.Grace stood by the wall of glass, arms wrapped around herself, staring at the glittering skyline that no longer felt beautiful. It felt hostile. Somewhere out there, Marcus was hiding. Somewhere out there, her studio the place that had been hers, untouched by Damien’s world was broken. She hadn’t cried when Damien told her. She hadn’t even allowed herself to feel it. But now, alone in the cold glow of the city lights, she felt the sting in her chest, the ache of violation.Behind her, the low murmur of Damien’s voice carried from his study. He hadn’t slept. His men moved in and out like shadows, delivering updates, reporting dead ends. Each time she heard his tone harden, she flinched, even if the words weren’t for her. When the door finally clicked shut, she didn’t have to turn to know he was there.“You should be i

  • When Fire Meets Grace    Chapter Fourteen: Cracks in the Armor

Grace had never imagined she’d get used to life in a cage, yet a strange rhythm crept into her days inside Damien’s penthouse. The mornings started with sunlight spilling through glass walls that looked out over the endless stretch of city. A view most would kill for, but to Grace, it felt like a reminder: no matter how far she could see, she couldn’t leave. She still made her own coffee, still moved through the kitchen with stubborn independence. But sometimes, she’d find Damien there before her, shirt sleeves rolled, pouring two mugs like he’d anticipated her. He’d hand her one without a word. Their fingers brushed. She told herself it meant nothing.Meals were the same kind of battlefield. Damien didn’t command her to sit beside him, but his gaze always lingered until she did. The dining table could have sat a dozen, yet it always ended with the two of them in quiet, tense silence. Sometimes she tried to provoke him with sharp remarks; sometimes she stayed silent, and the silence w

  • When Fire Meets Grace    Chapter Thirteen: Under Lock and Key

Grace barely had time to throw clothes into her bag before Damien had her out of the studio. His men arrived within minutes two shadows in black who swept the building like predators scenting danger. Grace stood stiffly between them, clutching her bag, her mind spinning in disbelief. She hadn’t agreed to this. Not really. The car ride was suffocating. Damien sat beside her, silent, a wall of calm authority while his phone buzzed occasionally in his pocket. He ignored it. His focus remained on her, every stolen glance heavy, unreadable.“Where are we going?” she finally asked, voice sharp enough to break the silence.“My place.”Her chest tightened. “No. Absolutely not. I’m not moving in with you like some some prisoner.”Damien didn’t flinch. “You think that studio is safe now? After what happened?” He leaned closer, voice low and edged with steel. “You’ll stay with me until I say otherwise.”Her jaw dropped at the arrogance. “Until you say? Damien, I don’t belong to you. I have a lif

  • When Fire Meets Grace    Chapter Twelve: Tangled Threads

Morning light spilled across the penthouse like liquid gold, softening the hard edges of glass and steel. Grace blinked awake, disoriented for a moment, until the memories crashed down. The rooftop. The gunshots. Damien’s arms shielding her, his voice low and commanding as he guided her out of danger. The way he’d looked at her in the aftermath like she was the only anchor he had in the storm of his life. She sat up too quickly, heart racing. The sheets were cool where he should have been. For one breathless second, she thought maybe it had all been a dream. But the faint scent of him clean, sharp, with that darker undertone she couldn’t name clung to the air, grounding her in reality. She pushed the covers back and slipped out of bed, padding barefoot across the polished floor. The penthouse was silent, eerily so. She checked the massive living room, the kitchen, the shadowed corners of glass and chrome. Empty. Her pulse steadied. This was her chance.Grace hurried back to the bedroo
