Chapter 2

작가: Washing Wheat
The photos were all taken from hidden, sneaky angles.

One showed my computer screen displaying a music app. Another was a photo of me sitting at my workstation with my eyes closed, making it look as though I was sleeping.

There was only one person who could have taken these photos—Cindy Sutton.

For the past few months, I had been mentoring her, often taking her through analytical reports.

Sometimes during lunch breaks, when I was too tired, I'd listen to some music. However, when I got busy, I would forget to close the app.

Also, during a particularly hectic period that resulted in me getting headaches, I often closed my eyes for a few seconds to rest.

I never expected that Cindy would use certain angles to photograph these moments, turning them into "evidence" that I was "slacking off" during work hours.

What an ungrateful wretch!

I initially wanted to explain myself, but when I saw Jacob's expression, I knew it would be useless. He was already in cahoots with Cindy.

"What if I refuse to go back to being a regular employee?" I asked.

"This is the company's decision," Jacob replied coolly. "You can only comply. Otherwise, you'll have to leave. If I remember correctly, your contract has expired, and the new one you just signed hasn't been confirmed yet, right?"

His confident manner made me lose all hope.

I had been wondering why the renewed contract hadn't been confirmed and returned to me. So this was why!

These people had already set a trap for me.

I could either endure this humiliation and return to being a regular employee, or resign on my own.

They also knew me well enough to know that there was no way I'd tolerate that kind of humiliation.

"Fine, you win. I quit," I said simply.

This time, Jacob's smile was genuine. "Think it over. Don't change your mind after. Quitting means no severance. But for the sake of us being ex-colleagues, I won't make you wait a month to file your resignation. Pack up and leave now."

He just couldn't wait to get rid of me, huh? He had even trapped me with the "no severance for quitting" clause.

Coincidentally, I couldn't wait either. Just looking at these people made me sick.

When I left Jacob's office, I saw Megan at her workstation, receiving congratulations from our colleagues.

It was getting a bit noisy.

Cindy walked over, shot me a disdainful look, and then linked arms with Megan. They looked really close.

At that moment, everything became clear to me. I had been blind all along!

I returned to my workstation and started packing. I also cleared all my personal information from the laptop.

Then, I sent a message to Felix Wilkins, my boyfriend. Back when we graduated, I chose to stay in this city because of him. Our relationship had been good all these years.

He also worked at our company, but in the technical department.

I thought Felix would call me immediately, but there was no response for a long time.

I checked my phone again and saw a single gray tick in the message I had sent. Felix's profile picture was grayed out too.

Had he blocked me?

Before I could fully process it, I saw Felix standing in front of Megan's workstation. Cindy pushed him to stand next to Megan.

Felix naturally wrapped his arm around Megan's waist, and the two gazed at each other affectionately.

Well, well. They had all been playing me for a fool!

Cindy suddenly looked over, her face full of smug satisfaction. Even Megan looked at me provocatively.

It was only Felix who didn't even bother glancing my way.

Whatever. I didn't want a piece of trash like him anyway.

I went to the HR department to turn in my laptop and return my employee badge.

While I was still thinking about what to do next, my phone rang.

"Ivy, I've noticed how well you've been handling your work. Have you thought about returning to Norell?"

It was Gregory Brown. He was the chairman of our company, which was headquartered in Norell.

He was also my dad's, Harvey Benson, best friend, and their companies were each other's closest strategic partners.

I majored in the relevant field in college, and Mr. Brown—who regarded me like his daughter—was dead set on bringing me into the company.

When I graduated, Mr. Brown wanted me to go back to Norell to work at headquarters, but I chose to stay at the Stonehaven branch for Felix.

Back then, the Stonehaven branch was undergoing a reform to clearly separate the roles of its headquarters and external branches.

The external branch was a separate subsidiary that was newly established not long ago.

With Mr. Brown's clarification, the questioning voices in the banquet hall quickly died down.Staria Group's official website also directly posted a clarification and included the video of Mr. Brown's speech below the statement. They even directly mentioned the account that did the expose. Netizens immediately swarmed that account, causing it to be deleted in no time.Dad also had his company's official account issue a statement, further proving my identity. All the malicious comments online disappeared without a trace, and public opinion swung the other way."Can these gossip accounts please be a bit more professional when they expose something next time? Don't just make a mountain out of a molehill!""The Bensons are also a powerhouse in Norell. Why would their heiress need to use her looks to get ahead? What a trashy gossip account!""These days, it feels like anything and everything ends up online!""Am I the only one who thinks she's absolutely won in life? She's got a goo

"Have you seen the trending news? The one about the general manager of Staria Group's Stonehaven branch being a homewrecker?""I heard she slept her way to the top, and that's how she became a GM at such a young age!"Staria Group was the name of our company. When they mentioned the Stonehaven branch's general manager, did they mean me?I opened my phone to search for related information on Twitter, but I didn't even need to search—it was already being shown on my feed.It said that an inside source claimed the newly appointed general manager of Stonehaven's branch, "Ms. Vy", leveraged powerful connections at headquarters and used her looks to climb the ranks. The only person who could directly appoint a branch general manager was the chairman of the headquarters. It was clear who this "Ms. Vy" was referring to.Furthermore, a few days ago, someone snapped a picture of "Ms. Vy" shopping in Norell with a young man, even saying they seemed very close. All signs pointed to "Ms. V

Jacob immediately took out his phone to make a report. The company's intranet had everyone's contact information. Just entering a name would bring up the corresponding email address.Jacob looked up Mr. Brown's email and sent him a report about me."I'll tell you this, Ivy. I've already emailed Mr. Brown at headquarters about you abusing your authority. You're done for!"He wore a look of barely concealed glee, as if my downfall were already a done deal.Cindy leaned against Jacob, half-hiding behind him. It was clear what she was thinking.I took out my phone and calmly opened WhatsApp. I then scrolled to my chat with Mr. Brown and sent a video call request.I placed the phone on the desk, the screen displaying my saved contact name for him."Mr. Brown won't see your email. How about I help you contact him directly?" I said.Jacob snorted, then glanced at the phone on my desk. "Ivy, cut the act. Are we really meant to believe that's Mr. Brown just because you said so?"I did

Felix's face turned deathly pale.I had only realized recently that Felix had started doing this two years ago. But back then, I was completely focused on my work and hadn't thought deeply about it. It was only after calming down that I understood what was going on.But being suspicious was one thing—the important thing was to obtain evidence. Thus, I held back and didn't make a move against him until I had solid proof.Felix wanted to beg, but when he saw how cold I was, he tried snatching the documents from me. However, several male colleagues grabbed him and pinned him to the floor.Just then, the police arrived. They swiftly took Felix away for investigations.I clapped my hands, feeling pleased. "Tomorrow, everyone gets a bonus. My treat!"This method was something Jacob had taught me back then.…The news of Felix being taken away by the police quickly spread throughout the company. Both Jacob and Cindy sent me emails. They were keen to wash their hands of it, insisting

After Wendy finished speaking, she sized up Megan and took a step back, frowning."Also, I've always wanted to ask, are you a snake? Why are you wriggling about so much?"Megan's coy, wiggly-shoulder act froze mid-motion. It left her in a weird posture that looked unsightly. With one glance from Wendy, the two security guards immediately dragged Megan out.Jacob, Cindy, and Felix stiffened. None of them dared to breathe loudly.I ignored them and got into the elevator with Wendy.Compared to Megan, those three disgusted me even more; simply firing them would be letting them off too easy.I intended to torture them slowly—like a blunt knife slowly cutting them—so they'd feel every bit of the pain. I would only feel satisfied with this slow, torturous act.…Over the next day, Jacob and Cindy kept their heads down and stayed out of sight. They were afraid I might suddenly remember their existence.I issued a notice stating that the external branch would undergo personnel restru

Jacob kept barking nonsense at me, causing the air to fill with the stench of his bad breath. How disgusting."Security! Security! This person isn't our employee. Throw her out!" he ordered.I covered my nose and took a step back to avoid Jacob's spittle spraying on my face. The two guards at the door rushed in. They looked at me, then at each other. They were unsure of what to do."Well, if it isn't Ivy? You're not even an employee of our company anymore, yet you came crawling back? Could you not find a job these past few months? Maybe you should beg Mr. Hale. Who knows, maybe he might show you some mercy and let you come back as a regular employee!"The person who spoke was Cindy. She leaned against Jacob in a suggestively close manner.I narrowed my eyes. So these two were an item.Cindy could actually stomach an old man? How admirable!More people gathered around to watch the commotion, but I didn't really want to deal with these two.I was waiting for Wendy Combs, the
