Chapter 2

Author: rika
I made Enzo personalized gifts for every holiday and anniversary. He accepted them without hesitation, but he never gave me anything in return. Even a simple thank you from him felt forced.

One day, I finally asked him why he had never given me a gift.

He just smiled. "Is that really what bothers you? I thought you were different from other women. I didn't think you'd measure a relationship by what you could get out of it."

His response shut me up while making it clear that, in his eyes, I was being petty and unreasonable.

Was this how a wealthy Don treated people?

I thought about the gift order list, then about the doctor's cold words. "I'm sorry. We couldn't save the baby."

I didn't want to spend another second arguing with him.

Just as I got to my feet, I heard footsteps outside.

The lock clicked. Vivian Moroni entered the house after punching in the code, then tossed her keys onto the shoe cabinet as if she belonged here.

She didn't bother asking if she could come in. She went straight to the fridge, grabbed Enzo's usual whiskey, and pulled her own glass from the cabinet.

She stopped when she noticed me.

"Sienna, what are you doing here?"

I turned to Enzo. "Isn't this our apartment? Did you tell her that she could come and go as she pleases?"

Vivian immediately put on a hurt expression. She sat beside him and slipped her arm through his.

"I'm sorry, Enzo. I just left a nearby party and thought I'd stop by to see you. I didn't realize Sienna would be so upset to see me. I'll leave."

As she spoke, she dropped the limited-edition Hermes bag she had been carrying onto the shoe cabinet, right next to a pair of cheap flip-flops. The contrast was jarring.

"Wait."

Enzo stopped her, then looked at me. "Vivian's my guest. I pay half the rent here. I don't need your permission to have her over."

"Exactly!" Vivian exclaimed. "If Enzo hadn't agreed to split the place with you, you'd be sleeping on the streets. You couldn't afford this apartment by yourself. You're the one getting the better deal. I hardly ever come by, so why the fuss?"

She had said things like that plenty of times in front of me. I could only imagine what she said when I wasn't there.

Enzo looked at Vivian, then back at me. "She's right."

He opened his banking app and held out his phone.

"I paid the security deposit three years ago. Pay me back today. I'd rather settle it now than have people say you lived off me for three years."

He sounded so casual. It was as if the money meant nothing to him.

He didn't even look at me.

This tiny 430-square-foot apartment was the first place we rented together.

I already had a place of my own, but he hated how he couldn't get in the mood there and insisted we move.

I found more than a dozen cheaper apartments, but he didn't like a single one of them.

In the end, we chose this place. The rent and security deposit were three times what I'd been paying before. I worked three jobs to cover the difference.

"Is this really all I am to you after three years, Enzo?"

I looked him in the eye as the tears finally fell.

I wasn't crying for him. I was crying for myself, and for the baby I'd just lost before it could develop.

When he saw me crying, he slowly lowered his phone. "It was just a joke. Why are you getting so worked up?"

Vivian clicked her tongue.

"Enzo, you should end the lease next month. You can't keep letting her take advantage of you. Have her sign an IOU, too. If you don't, people are going to think you're a rich idiot who's supported a woman for three years.

"If Sienna really doesn't care about money, she shouldn't have a problem signing the IOU, right?"

If hitting her weren't a crime, I would've done it right then and there.

But I knew what would happen if I did. Our families would be dragged into a feud that could go on forever.

I might not even make it out of this apartment alive.

They had plenty of ways to make people disappear.

I'd played along with their little charade for three years. But that was enough.

I was done playing.

Enzo had finally understood that the woman he once thought was only useful to him when she served a purpose was now being cherished by another man. He'd lost everything."Sienna," he said, his voice trembling. "I held on to your money because I was afraid you'd waste it. I was trying to look after it for you. I loved you."The excuse was so self-serving that it made my stomach turn.Leone scoffed. "Don Valenti, don't confuse control with love. If you had really loved her, you would've trusted her instead of constantly watching her and second-guessing her. You never gave her a reason to feel secure. You only ever loved yourself."Every single word hit home. Enzo stared at our intertwined fingers. His eyes darkened.I calmly stared at him. "Enzo, I don't love you anymore. Stay out of my life for good."Then, I took Leone's hand and left without looking back.I could faintly hear Enzo crying behind us.The man who once ruled everything around him had finally been reduced to a jok

I shook my head and smiled helplessly as I looked at the dress that Leone had sent me.I changed into a simple white silk gown and fastened the Heart of the Ocean around my neck.I'd turned down Leone's offer to pick me up because I wanted to surprise him by showing up to the party on my own. While I was on the road, several men in black suits suddenly blocked my way.Enzo stepped out of an armored SUV.He'd lost a lot of weight, and his eyes were bloodshot. He grabbed my wrist.I yanked my hand free and took two steps back. "What are you doing here? How did you find me?""I used every connection I had to find you," he rasped. "Please forgive me. Come back with me. I know I messed up. Vivian was the one who kept turning us against each other. I'll never have anything to do with her again!""Enough." I cut him off coldly. "We ended things a long time ago. You don't get to come here and tell me what to do."Enzo pulled a jewelry box from inside his jacket and opened it.Inside

The next day, I started cleaning up the yard.A man stepped through the gate and paused when he saw me working. He stepped back outside, checked the house number to make sure he'd come to the right place, then sheepishly came back in."Leone! You finally made it," Rosa greeted him warmly. "This is Sienna, Lia's daughter. She's planning to build a resort here. Do you think you could lend her a hand and keep an eye on things for her?"The moment I learned that he was Leone Caruso, I instinctively stood up.I'd heard his name before. He was the Don of another family. Even Enzo, arrogant as he was, had to show him some respect.Yet, the man I'd heard so much about looked almost awkward as he wiped the dust from his hands on his pants before gently shaking mine. "Nice to meet you, Sienna."After lunch, he offered to walk the property with me.Standing in the sea breeze, he quickly surveyed the terrain before laying out his plans."This land has everything going for it. It's right o

Before meeting with Erin, I wanted to get the complete medical records to add to the evidence. When the nurse at the clinic recognized me, her expression changed. "People from the Valenti family came here a few days ago. The Don himself ordered that all the paper records for you and the baby be destroyed. They even wiped the records from the system."A chill ran through me.Why would Enzo go so far as to erase the baby's medical records? Was he afraid that I would keep trying to get money from him? Or was his pathetic need for control so strong that he had to cover up even something like this? With that cold dread settling in my chest, and any last hope I had for him gone, I walked into Erin's office. She had spread everything across the desk. There were copies of the records I'd kept while working overtime, my promotion request that my manager had buried, and the emails restricting my access to my accounts.Erin slid a power of attorney across the desk. "We have enough evidence

Enzo snatched the medical report from me. His hands were shaking uncontrollably.I watched him open his mouth to speak, but not a single word came out for a long while. It was as though something had caught in his throat. He just stood there, staring at the thin sheet of paper.Vivian was the first to react. She snatched the report from his hands, but after just two glances, her carefully made-up face had turned pale."T-This can't be true," she stammered, her voice shaking despite her efforts to hide it."I'm afraid it is."I left the report with them so Enzo could take a closer look. "This report was issued by St. Maria Clinic. You can keep it and verify it for yourselves."Enzo finally found his voice. He sounded hoarse and defeated."Sienna… why didn't you tell me sooner?"I held his gaze as a mocking smile tugged at my lips."Didn't I tell you?" I scoffed. "I begged you for help while I was lying on an operating table at an underground clinic after a car accident three d

No matter how long Enzo and I had been together, none of it could outweigh what had happened over the past two days.I finally saw the man behind the mask, and what I found was ugly.More and more coworkers gathered around us. At first, they only whispered among themselves.Enzo didn't stop them. Soon, their voices grew louder."Don Valenti kept his identity from her because he was afraid she'd feel inferior. He even made us keep it from her all these years. How could anyone say his feelings weren't genuine?""She eats his food, lives in his apartment, and still has the nerve to throw a fit at him. He's the only heir to the family. He could marry the daughter of any mafia family in this country if he wanted. The fact that he chose her proves that he doesn't care about money.""She should know her place. Without Don Valenti, who is she?"The crowd around me kept growing. Faces that had been laughing with me just days ago were now whispering about me.Enzo struggled to hide the s
