Chapter 5

Author: richer
Edward seemed to be completely enraged.

“Leave me? No way!”

With that, he didn’t even spare me a glance. His features twisted with fury as he ordered the bodyguards coldly,

“Keep a close eye on the Donna. She isn’t allowed to take a single step outside.”

“If anything happens to the Donna or the baby, you won’t live to see another day.”

After making his position clear to me, Edward openly brought Alice home.

It was as if he wanted to make me jealous, so he went out of his way to spoil Alice.

He bought her limited-edition necklaces, let her wear my pajamas, and even appeared with Alice in the promotional video for the opening of the Family’s club.

Alice smiled sweetly.

“The Don took me to pick out our wedding rings. Is the next surprise going to be a proposal?”

She happily spread her fingers.

The ring on her ring finger caught the light so brightly that it hurt my eyes.

Behind her, Edward was beaming, gazing at her with undisguised affection.

Suddenly, I remembered his trembling hands at our wedding.

His eyes had been red as he nervously slipped the wedding ring onto my finger and swore before God that he would never betray me for the rest of his life.

Unwilling to accept this, I exposed Edward’s affair on the Family’s internal network.

The post was deleted the very next second after it went up.

The bedroom door was suddenly kicked open with a deafening bang.

Edward’s furious voice rang.

“Monica, why can’t you just behave? I told you I would never let Alice affect your position. Why do you keep pushing this?”

I looked at the man who had once shielded me from dangerous, now questioning me because of another woman.

My heart felt as though countless needles were piercing it over and over again.

The pain was so intense I could barely breathe.

“Then let’s get a divorce.”

“Once I’m gone, I’ll never bother her again.”

Alice walked in.

She was dressed in haute couture, wearing the latest designer necklace.

At a glance, it was obvious she was Edward’s carefully cherished rose.

The contrast between her and me couldn’t have been more striking.

I sat on the floor with my hair disheveled, my swollen belly exposed, tears streaming down my face.

“You’re almost thirty. Why are you still throwing a tantrum about getting a divorce?”

“And besides, you killed your parents—who would dare marry you? who would ever marry a woman like you?”

Her casual words felt like thousand-pound stones crushing my chest, leaving me almost unable to breathe.

“What did you say?”

I abruptly lifted my head and looked at Edward.

He didn’t dare meet my eyes, but he didn’t stop Alice to talk either.

“You told her?”

Alice shoved me in displeasure.

“Why are you yelling at me?”

“The Don is still willing to keep you around. You should be grateful.”

“If you weren’t pregnant, why would the Don still be with you?”

“That’s enough!”

Edward shot Alice a warning look before walking toward me, as if he wanted to hold me.

“Don’t touch me! You disgust me!”

I shoved Edward away in disgust.

The look I gave him was no different from the way I would look at an enemy.

Edward’s body stiffened.

In the middle of the struggle, the floor lamp beside us toppled over.

In an instant, Edward shoved me aside and shielded Alice with his body.

The lamp crashed down on me.

Shards of glass sank viciously into my lower leg, and a wave of excruciating pain surged through me.

Alice curled herself into Edward’s arms and looked at me like a victor.

“Monica, I just didn’t see clearly…”

Edward froze for a moment.

When he looked at me again, his eyes were filled with panic.

“Don, it hurts so much.”

Alice let out a fake cry.

Edward immediately scooped her into his arms and rushed her to the hospital.

The instinctive way he protected Alice left me unable to breathe.

As my wound was being treated, my phone buzzed repeatedly with messages from him.

“These past few days have been my fault. I’ll take care of everything.”

“Monica, I really do still love you.”

My body hurt, but my heart hurt even more.

I no longer wanted to torture myself over whether his love was real or not.

I leaned back against the headboard and drifted into a deep sleep.

I dreamed of the past.

Because of my pathetic kindness, I had brought a spy from our rival Family back home.

That mistake exposed one of the Family’s operations, and my parents died because of it.

That winter night, I curled up in Edward’s arms, sobbing until my whole body shook with convulsions.

Again and again, he kissed my forehead and whispered,

“Monica, from now on, I’m your family.”

He patted my back and told me that none of it had been my fault.

He was the one who saved me.

But how did we end up like this?

He didn’t move.He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot.“Monica, I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have cheated on you. I shouldn’t have told Alice our secrets. And I shouldn’t have abandoned you when you needed me most. Just give me a chance to make it up to you… You can hit me, curse at me, make me do whatever you want. I’ll do anything…”I walked over to him and crouched down.Gently, I closed the box in his palm and pushed it back toward him.“Edward, I don’t hate you anymore,” I said. “I really don’t. I’ve thought about a lot over these past two years. Hating someone is exhausting. I don’t want to waste the rest of my life hating you.”His lips trembled.“Then…”“But I don’t love you anymore, either.”I looked him straight in the eyes and spoke each word clearly.“You used up every bit of love I had for you. .”Edward grabbed my wrist, his grip painfully tight.“I’m not leaving… I can wait. I’ll wait as long as it takes…”I slowly pulled my hand free, stood up, and took a step back.

I opened a flower shop in the outskirts of New York. The shop was small, but business was good. The neighbors loved coming by to buy my flowers.Lilith came to visit me once, and as she was leaving, she held my hand and said, “Monica, you look so much more at ease than you used to.”I smiled but said nothing. It was true. I hadn’t woken up in a panic in the middle of the night for a long time. I hadn’t dreamed about Edward in a long time, either. That afternoon, I was changing the water for a bouquet of white lilies when the bell above the door rang. Without looking up, I said, “Welcome. What would you like to buy?”There were no footsteps. No one said a word.Confused, I looked up and froze.Edward was standing in the doorway. He had lost a great deal of weight. His cheekbones jutted sharply from his gaunt face, his eye sockets were sunken, and he was wearing a gray overcoat with a wrinkled collar. He was clutching something in his hand so tightly that his knuckles had gone white.“Mo

Edward had only one thought in his mind.He had to get Monica back.He had to tell her that she was the only woman he had ever loved. On the way, he called his underboss to ask about Monica’s whereabouts. The underboss hesitated before answering.“Don, the Donna left Sicily last night.”“I called you, but Miss Alice answered. She said you already knew and told me not to worry about it.”Edward felt as if he had stopped breathing.Monica had left? How could she bear to leave him?How could she leave without even caring about their child? The underboss hesitated again.“There’s something else you should probably know.”“The Donna lost the baby because Lorenzo and his men cornered her and beat her.”Edward couldn’t believe what he had heard. He asked again.“What did you say?”“Monica lost the baby?” Edward’s grip on the phone tightened abruptly, his knuckles turning white. He pulled up the phone and immediately turned the car around.Alice was still lying on her bedroom bed, clutching h

Late that night, Edward returned home with Alice. He finally noticed that the wedding portrait was gone.A wave of unease washed over him, as if something was slipping away from him.“Don, I wore the outfit you love most today…”For the first time, Edward coldly pushed Alice away and walked straight toward Monica’s room.Just one glance was enough to leave him frozen in place.Every single one of Monica’s belongings was gone.Edward sat down on the sofa and irritably lit a cigarette.A soft body pressed against his back.Thinking it was Monica, he smiled.“Monica, don’t run away from home again next time. You’re not a child anymore!”But the voice that sounded beside his ear was Alice’s soft and vulnerable one.“Don, do you not love me anymore?”She used the sweet, delicate tone he usually loved so much. But now, Edward found it unbearably irritating.Suppressing his impatience, he coaxed her.“Of course I do.”Alice leaned in to kiss his lips.“Then, Don, you’re not allowed to think a

Lilith had already arranged a private flight to the United States.By the time I arrived at the airport, the sky was beginning to darken.I didn’t tell anyone where I was going.Only Lilith knew.I deleted my old phone number.I changed my contact information.I left behind almost everything that connected me to the woman I had once been. When the plane finally took off, I rested my forehead against the cold window. The gray-blue Mediterranean slowly disappeared beneath the clouds.I stared at it until my eyes began to ache. This was the place where I had grown up.The place where my parents had died. The place where I had met Edward. The place where I had loved him.And the place where I had lost my child.I closed my eyes.“Goodbye, Sicily.”A tear slipped silently down my cheek.Lilith stayed beside me until I was settled in a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. She wanted to stay.I refused.“You have to go back.”“Monica…”“I’ll be fine.”She looked at me for a long time

“The child is kicking me. I feel so uncomfortable, Don.”Alice raised her voice, deliberately drowning out what I had just said.Edward immediately scooped her into his arms and rushed toward the doctor’s office. He left me with only one sentence.“Get some rest. I’ll come back to see you and the baby.”I stood there in a daze, watching them disappear around the corner. He was going to come back.He was going to come back to see me and our baby. But there was no baby left to see.My hand slowly drifted to my lower abdomen. It was so flat that I could hardly believe that only a few hours ago, there had still been a tiny life growing inside me.Our child. The child I had spent seven months protecting.Edward had once told me he wanted a son who looked just like him or a girl who looked just like me.All of it was gone. And Edward didn’t even know.I had told him.He simply hadn’t listened. The man who had once sworn that I was the most important person in his life had walked away .I wip
