Chapter 6

Author: richer
Early the next morning, all the servants in the house were nowhere to be found.

I had no choice but to leave alone for my prenatal checkup.

A black SUV silently glided toward me and stopped directly in my path.

Three men jumped out.

The man leading them was Edward’s distant cousin, Lorenzo.

“Donna.”

He flashed me a grin.

“Oh, no. I should call you a traitor.”

“Get out of my way.”

My voice trembled.

Lorenzo calmly pulled out a phone.

My profile photo was displayed prominently on the screen, with four words in red beside it:

FAMILY TRAITOR.

He tilted the screen toward me.

“You didn’t know, did you?”

“Miss Alice uploaded a detailed account of what happened back then to the Family’s internal network.”

“How do you still have the nerve to stay in Sicily, let alone remain by the Don’s side?”

He raised his fist and drove it into my stomach.

Pain exploded through me like a bolt of lightning.

My entire body doubled over, my knees crashing onto the ground as both hands instinctively shielded my abdomen.

But before I could recover, his second kick slammed into my back.

I fell face-first onto the ground, my cheek scraping against the rough stone pavement.

The skin tore open, and warm blood trickled down my cheek.

“Traitor! Get the hell out of Sicily!”

“Beat her to death!”

The voices around me blurred into a deafening buzz.

Someone yanked me by the hair.

Someone else stomped on my hand.

More fists and shoes rained down on my back, shoulders, and legs.

I curled into a ball, desperately trying to protect my stomach.

Then blood began seeping from between my legs, staining my dress red.

I opened my mouth and tried to scream for help, but only a hoarse gasp escaped my throat.

The roar of an approaching car sounded beside me.

I looked up hopefully.

It was Edward’s car.

But Edward didn’t even spare a glance at the chaos unfolding beside the road.

He carefully shielded Alice as he escorted her into the estate.

Edward…

Lorenzo delivered one final kick, striking me directly in the lower abdomen.

A wave of excruciating pain swept through me.

My vision went black.

My consciousness drifted away like a kite whose string had been cut.

The last thing I heard was Lilith screaming my name.

......

Just before I was wheeled into the operating room, Edward called me.

The moment I answered, his furious accusations came crashing down.

“Do you really have to keep fighting with me?”

“Alice only accidentally posted those things online.”

“Was it really necessary to run away from home over something like that?”

“You should be the one apologizing to her.”

I didn’t even have time to explain.

He angrily hung up.

The doctor beside me asked,

“Your injuries are severe. There’s no way we can save the baby.”

“Are you sure you don’t want us to notify the baby’s father?”

I closed my eyes.

A tear slipped from the corner of my eye.

“The baby’s father is dead.”

After the surgery, I didn’t want to stay in the hospital any longer.

Unexpectedly, I ran into Edward at the hospital entrance.

Edward was carefully supporting Alice with one arm.

In his other hand was her prenatal examination report.

The moment he saw me, Edward instinctively stepped in front of Alice, shielding her from me.

Then he asked,

“Why are you here?”

I looked at his hand resting so gently on Alice’s belly.

My heart twisted with unbearable pain when I thought of our child.

Edward frowned slightly.

His gaze fell to my now-flat stomach.

Then his blue eyes suddenly lit up with delight.

He strode toward me.

For once, he looked completely flustered, like an inexperienced young man who didn’t know what to do with himself.

“Monica…”

“You had the baby?”

I gave him a pale smile.

“Congratulations.”

“You’re a father again.”

Edward didn’t notice anything wrong with my words.

His handsome face was filled with joy.

“Where’s the baby?”

“Is it a boy or a girl?”

“I’ve prepared so many things for the baby.”

“Let’s go home together…”

I cut him off.

“The baby has died.”

He didn’t move.He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot.“Monica, I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have cheated on you. I shouldn’t have told Alice our secrets. And I shouldn’t have abandoned you when you needed me most. Just give me a chance to make it up to you… You can hit me, curse at me, make me do whatever you want. I’ll do anything…”I walked over to him and crouched down.Gently, I closed the box in his palm and pushed it back toward him.“Edward, I don’t hate you anymore,” I said. “I really don’t. I’ve thought about a lot over these past two years. Hating someone is exhausting. I don’t want to waste the rest of my life hating you.”His lips trembled.“Then…”“But I don’t love you anymore, either.”I looked him straight in the eyes and spoke each word clearly.“You used up every bit of love I had for you. .”Edward grabbed my wrist, his grip painfully tight.“I’m not leaving… I can wait. I’ll wait as long as it takes…”I slowly pulled my hand free, stood up, and took a step back.

I opened a flower shop in the outskirts of New York. The shop was small, but business was good. The neighbors loved coming by to buy my flowers.Lilith came to visit me once, and as she was leaving, she held my hand and said, “Monica, you look so much more at ease than you used to.”I smiled but said nothing. It was true. I hadn’t woken up in a panic in the middle of the night for a long time. I hadn’t dreamed about Edward in a long time, either. That afternoon, I was changing the water for a bouquet of white lilies when the bell above the door rang. Without looking up, I said, “Welcome. What would you like to buy?”There were no footsteps. No one said a word.Confused, I looked up and froze.Edward was standing in the doorway. He had lost a great deal of weight. His cheekbones jutted sharply from his gaunt face, his eye sockets were sunken, and he was wearing a gray overcoat with a wrinkled collar. He was clutching something in his hand so tightly that his knuckles had gone white.“Mo

Edward had only one thought in his mind.He had to get Monica back.He had to tell her that she was the only woman he had ever loved. On the way, he called his underboss to ask about Monica’s whereabouts. The underboss hesitated before answering.“Don, the Donna left Sicily last night.”“I called you, but Miss Alice answered. She said you already knew and told me not to worry about it.”Edward felt as if he had stopped breathing.Monica had left? How could she bear to leave him?How could she leave without even caring about their child? The underboss hesitated again.“There’s something else you should probably know.”“The Donna lost the baby because Lorenzo and his men cornered her and beat her.”Edward couldn’t believe what he had heard. He asked again.“What did you say?”“Monica lost the baby?” Edward’s grip on the phone tightened abruptly, his knuckles turning white. He pulled up the phone and immediately turned the car around.Alice was still lying on her bedroom bed, clutching h

Late that night, Edward returned home with Alice. He finally noticed that the wedding portrait was gone.A wave of unease washed over him, as if something was slipping away from him.“Don, I wore the outfit you love most today…”For the first time, Edward coldly pushed Alice away and walked straight toward Monica’s room.Just one glance was enough to leave him frozen in place.Every single one of Monica’s belongings was gone.Edward sat down on the sofa and irritably lit a cigarette.A soft body pressed against his back.Thinking it was Monica, he smiled.“Monica, don’t run away from home again next time. You’re not a child anymore!”But the voice that sounded beside his ear was Alice’s soft and vulnerable one.“Don, do you not love me anymore?”She used the sweet, delicate tone he usually loved so much. But now, Edward found it unbearably irritating.Suppressing his impatience, he coaxed her.“Of course I do.”Alice leaned in to kiss his lips.“Then, Don, you’re not allowed to think a

Lilith had already arranged a private flight to the United States.By the time I arrived at the airport, the sky was beginning to darken.I didn’t tell anyone where I was going.Only Lilith knew.I deleted my old phone number.I changed my contact information.I left behind almost everything that connected me to the woman I had once been. When the plane finally took off, I rested my forehead against the cold window. The gray-blue Mediterranean slowly disappeared beneath the clouds.I stared at it until my eyes began to ache. This was the place where I had grown up.The place where my parents had died. The place where I had met Edward. The place where I had loved him.And the place where I had lost my child.I closed my eyes.“Goodbye, Sicily.”A tear slipped silently down my cheek.Lilith stayed beside me until I was settled in a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. She wanted to stay.I refused.“You have to go back.”“Monica…”“I’ll be fine.”She looked at me for a long time

“The child is kicking me. I feel so uncomfortable, Don.”Alice raised her voice, deliberately drowning out what I had just said.Edward immediately scooped her into his arms and rushed toward the doctor’s office. He left me with only one sentence.“Get some rest.
