Chapter 3

Author: Wulan
Agnes’ eyes were bloodshot, her expression murderous. “Ian Elsher, Nathan tried to kill himself because of what you said to him.”

I froze for a moment. “What did you just say?”

She exploded, screaming at me, “You knew he had depression! You knew how unstable he was! Why would you provoke him?”

Before I could respond, she instructed her bodyguards to shove me into a car. “You and Nathan have the same rare blood type. You’re the only one who can save him!”

We ran several red lights before I was dragged into the hospital. “Doctor, he has O-negative blood! He can donate!”

Her entire body trembled as she spoke. I had never seen Agnes look so utterly frantic.

I could only stand there in a daze, my mind completely blank.

Like a puppet on strings, I let her people drag me into the blood-draw room. I let her roughly yank up my sleeve.

I barely registered anything happening around me. All I could think about was the way Agnes had panicked over Nathan, how desperate she had looked at the thought of losing him.

Then I heard the doctor say, “I’m sorry, sir, but this patient recently underwent surgery. Donating blood could seriously interfere with his recovery.”

In a daze, I reached down and touched the scar on my right side. I donated a kidney to Nathan just three months ago.

The next second, Agnes’s furious voice rang out. “I said draw his blood! I don’t care if it affects his recovery. All I care about is Nathan being okay!”

It felt as though every drop of blood in my body had turned to ice. I stared at her in disbelief. “Agnes, I’m your husband.”

However, she kept screaming, ordering the staff to force the needle into my vein.

I fought with everything I had. “Agnes! Agnes! You can’t do this to me!”

I yanked the needle out and bolted for the door. I had barely taken a step before her bodyguards seized me, their grip crushingly tight.

Agnes seemed to have completely lost her mind. She cupped my face in her hands.

Her voice was eerily calm, yet so cold it sent a shiver down my spine. “Ian, give Nathan your blood.”

Four bodyguards pinned me down in the blood-draw room.

One bag after another, my blood was taken from me and carried away to save Nathan’s life. The color slowly drained from my face.

I held on until I could not anymore, then crumpled to the floor.

…

When I woke up, three days had passed. The doctor gently explained that I had fallen into a coma due to severe blood loss.

I stared blankly ahead, my gaze eventually meeting Nathan’s. Guilt filled his eyes.

“Ian, you know everything now, don’t you? I’m sorry. I felt so guilty about what I’d done to you that I couldn’t take it anymore. I never imagined Agnes would treat you like that.”

He knelt beside my bed, begging me to forgive him.

Still, I could not help noticing that the cuts on his wrists were covered with nothing more than a few Band-Aids.

He hardly looked like someone who had been in the life-threatening condition Agnes had described.

Suddenly, he straightened, as though he had finally made up his mind. “Ian, from now on, my child will be your child, too.”

A wave of fury rose in my chest. My voice was raw as I rasped out, “Get out.”

Nathan was startled for a moment and looked at me with wounded eyes. Then, without warning, he grabbed my hand and slapped himself across the face with it.

“I know it’s too late to explain myself, but I don’t want to lose you as a friend. Go ahead, hit me. Do whatever you need to let it out. If that’s what it takes for you to forgive me, I’ll take it.”

He grabbed my hand again, trying to make me strike him, when Agnes appeared in the doorway.

She rushed over and pulled Nathan away from me. In the struggle, I was dragged off the bed and crashed hard onto the floor.

My forehead struck the corner of the table, sending the room spinning. I groaned in pain and called for a doctor.

That was when Agnes seemed to realize what had happened. She released Nathan and started moving toward me, as though to help me up.

However, Nathan stopped her. “Agnes, this is all your fault! You went and said all that nonsense to Ian, and now he’s really angry with me! I’m going to lose my best friend!”

She immediately turned to soothe him, saying, “Okay, okay. It’s all my fault. Just calm down. I’ll take you home first. The baby needs you.”

I watched them from behind. My jaw clenched as I said, “Agnes, I’ll never forgive either of you, not for as long as I live.”

She paused for a moment but did not turn around. Ten minutes later, for the first time ever, she texted me out of the blue.

“I have Daisy to thank for that. She showed up and beat the hell out of me. As for why I didn’t come looking for you right away…”Agnes lifted the hem of her pant leg, revealing an electronic ankle monitor.“I hired the best lawyer I could find and fought a long, hard legal battle. That was the only way I managed to get a one-year reprieve and a chance to see you. I know that no matter what I say or do, you probably won’t ever forgive me. But I still wanted to see you. Just once. To see if you were doing well.“I’m sorry. It was all my fault. I love you, Ian. I should have realized my own feelings sooner. You’re the one I love. When I heard you were dead, I—”“Ian! Come on!” One of my hiking buddies called out from up ahead.Agnes never finished her sentence. She did not try to continue either. She just stood there, a faint smile lingering on her lips as she kept looking at me, like she was trying to etch my face into her memory.I furrowed my brows slightly. “Are you done? I nee

Ian's POV:Two years later, I was sitting in a café abroad, listening to a news broadcast from back home.“Former Trelawny Corporation CEO Agnes Trelawny has been convicted of soliciting assault and first-degree murder. Following a two-year trial, she has been sentenced to life imprisonment, suspended for one year.”The coffee in my hand trembled slightly at those words before the surface became still again.Behind me, Daisy’s hurried footsteps approached. “Hey, you forgot something again.”She handed me my bag and asked, “Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you?”I smiled and shook my head. “It’s an all-male hiking group. You really want to tag along?”Daisy immediately shook her head. She could not stand the men from her old crew. They smelled awful and never stopped talking. She preferred people like me—gentle, quiet, and easygoing.Someone pleasant to look at and even more pleasant to be around.Still, she could not help reminding me, “If you get tired or anything

“Let me out! Let me out of here! I don’t want to stay in this place!”The door slammed shut behind Nathan. Agnes walked into the adjoining room and slapped Sophie across the face. She let out a cold laugh. “You two actually teamed up to deceive me!”Sophie winced in pain but still managed to force a smile. “Ms. Trelawny, believe it or not, he fooled me too. He promised he would marry me.”Agnes said nothing. As she turned to leave, she enunciated sharply and deliberately, “Get out.”Sophie hurried after her. “What about him?”Agnes stopped in her tracks and replied in an icy voice, “He can go to hell and answer for what he did to Ian.”Agnes sat just outside the room. From inside came Nathan’s screams and furious curses.“Don’t touch me! Ah! Get your filthy hands off me, you disgusting old women! Agnes, I was wrong! Please, let me go! Somebody help me! Please!”The woman sat motionless in her chair, cradling an urn in her arms. Over and over, her fingers brushed across its su

Agnes ignored him and held up her phone, showing him the email. Her voice was calm and unhurried, yet there was a bone-chilling coldness beneath every word. “You sent this email, didn’t you?”Nathan’s eyes widened instinctively. He stared at the screen and muttered, “I already deleted it. How could it still…”She let out a bitter laugh, but her eyes had turned red. She could not believe that such a pathetic little scheme had driven her own husband to the brink of death.Suddenly, she grabbed Nathan by the throat. “Why did you do it? He was your best friend! Why did you have to drive him to his death? Ian did nothing wrong! We were the ones who cheated on him and betrayed him! We were the ones at fault! You deserve to die! I’ll kill you and make you pay for what you did to Ian!”Nathan shoved her away. In an instant, Agnes pulled out a gun.Nathan froze, too afraid to move.Sophie panicked. She did not expect Agnes to be this unhinged. “Ms. Trelawny, murder is a crime.”Agnes s

Third-Person POV:Only then did Agnes realize that the man who had been alive and well just yesterday was now nothing more than ashes in a small urn.Suddenly, she broke down sobbing. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry!”However, no one answered her anymore, and no one would ever bring her a bowl of soup in the middle of the night again. She let the pain in her stomach twist and churn, as though she were deliberately punishing herself. There was a glass of milk right beside the bed, yet she did not move an inch. She simply clutched the urn tightly to her chest, terrified that it might disappear if she let go.She remained that way until the lock clicked and the door opened. Her assistant stepped inside. She said awkwardly, “Ms. Trelawny, Mr. Gray is asking to see you.”That was when a flicker of life returned to Agnes’ dull, lifeless eyes. Her voice was hoarse as she demanded, “How did things end up like this?”Her assistant answered nervously, “M-Ms. Trelawny, you sent us an email. Don’

By the time Agnes arrived at the funeral home, the service had already begun. Amid the sobs and wails of mourners, she looked up at the black-and-white portrait displayed at the front of the room. She instinctively rubbed her eyes, convinced she must be seeing things. However, as she stepped closer, she could no longer lie to herself.Agnes stared at the scene before her, dazed and disoriented, murmuring, “How is this possible? How could this be? I never thought he would actually die.”Julian Meadows, my manager, stood nearby, his eyes red with grief. He glared at her, his face twisted with resentment. “What are you doing here? Get out! Just get out! Ian didn’t want to see you! Leave!”Agnes was still reeling from the news of my death. She did not get angry. Instead, she looked at Julian with desperate hope.“He’s not dead, is he? Where have you hidden Ian? Bring him out. Tell him to stop pretending. I’ve already had every video taken down. I won’t hold what he did to Nathan again
