For one second, no one moved.

Cassienne stared at her. “What did you say?”

The nurse replied immediately. “He opened his eyes a few minutes ago. The doctors are with him now.”

Abigail covered her mouth, she was filled with joy. And Mrs. Rawlings, she was also shouting excitedly.

Jessica jumped to her feet. Daisy grabbed Aurora’s hand.

Cassienne rose too quickly. “Take me to him. I want to see him myself.”

Ray moved toward her. “Cassienne, slowly.”

She took one step forward and she stopp

Cassienne fell back against the pillow. Dreston stared toward the doctor. The cry came again, and it was very strong this time. It was clear. Cassienne opened her eyes. “Is the baby alright?” The doctor smiled. “Perfect.” A nurse moved quickly to clean and wrap the baby. Dreston’s eyes filled with tears as he looked at Cassienne. She was already crying. “What is it?” she asked. The doctor looked at both of them. “Congratulations.” She lifted the baby slightly. “You have a beautiful baby girl.” Cassienne covered her mouth. “A girl?” Dreston stared. “A daughter?” The nurse brought the baby closer. She was tiny, wrapped warmly, her face red from crying. The moment Cassienne saw her, another sob left her. “My baby.” The nurse placed the baby carefully against her chest. Cassienne looked down at her daughter like the rest of the world had disappeared. Dreston could not speak. He had never seen anything so small, so perfect, and so completely theirs. Cassienne looked at him.

The contraction began to ease. Cassienne reached one hand toward him. The nurses moved his bed closer. Dreston lifted his hand slowly, his fingers touched hers. The contact was enough to make both of them cry harder. Cassienne squeezed his hand. “You frightened me.” “I know.” “I thought I lost you.” “I am sorry to worry you that much. But I am here now.” “You took a bullet.” Cassienne tightened her hold on his hand. He winced. She noticed immediately. “Did I hurt you?” “No.” “You made a face.” “I’m fine.” Ray stood near the door. “He is lying.” Dreston looked at him. “No one asked you.” Cassienne turned toward Ray. “Why did you bring him here if he is in pain?” Dreston stared at her. “You asked for me.” “I did, but not if it would kill you.” “It will not.” The obstetrician stepped closer. “Both of you need to remain calm.” Cassienne looked at her. “How am I supposed to remain calm?” The doctor smiled. “Then at least try to breathe.” Another contraction started.

Dreston did not sleep. The doctors had tried everything they could to make him rest, but he remained awake, staring at the door and asking for updates about Cassienne every few minutes. At first, the nurses answered him patiently. Then they began looking at one another whenever he asked the same question again. Dreston looked toward the clock. Only a few minutes had passed since the last update. It felt like an hour. His body was weak, and the pain in his side became worse whenever he tried to move, but none of that mattered to him. Cassienne was somewhere in the same hospital, in pain, and he was lying there doing nothing. His blood pressure had already risen twice. The doctor warned him that if he did not calm down, they would give him something to help him sleep. Dreston had looked at the man as though he had threatened his life. “If you make me sleep while my wife is giving birth, I will make sure you never work in this hospital again.” The doctor stared at him. “You d

The moment he stepped outside, Daisy rushed toward him. “What is happening?” “Cassienne is in active labour.” Jessica moved closer. “How far?” “Far enough that she cannot leave.” Mrs. Rawlings looked toward the closed doors. “Is the baby alright?” “The baby is fine.” Aurora released a relieved breath. Daisy looked at Ray. “Where are you going?” “To Dreston.” “What happened?” “He is awake, confused, and asking for Cassienne.” Jessica smiled. “That sounds like him.” Ray shook his head and hurried away. Leaving the rest of them. Jessica watched him go. “This day is becoming strange.” Daisy looked toward the delivery room. “Dreston wakes up. Cassienne goes into labour. Abigail is probably crying in intensive care.” Mrs. Rawlings clasped her hands. “It is a good day.” Everyone looked at her. She wiped her eyes. “It is frightening, but it is good.” Aurora smiled softly. “Yes. I agree with you.” Mrs. Rawlings looked toward the delivery room doors. “Mr. Tremont is alive.”

After the long silence. Ray stepped in front of the wheelchair, forcing the nurse to stop. “Listen to me.” Cassienne looked at him. “I know you want to see Dreston. I know you have been waiting for this moment.” His voice became softer. “But we need to examine you first. We need to know how far your labour has progressed. We need to check the baby’s heartbeat and make sure both of you are safe.” “But I am fine.” “You are having painful contractions and your water has broken.” “That doesn't mean something is wrong.” “It doesn't," Ray agreed. “And I want to keep it that way.” Cassienne looked toward the end of the hallway. The intensive care unit was in the opposite direction. The delivery room doors opened. And the nurses pushed Cassienne inside while Ray gave instructions. The others were told to wait outside until the initial examination was complete. Cassienne looked at all of them and felt the fear inside her ease slightly. Then the doors closed. A nurse helped Cassien

A sharp pain tightened across her lower stomach, her hand flew to her belly. “Cassienne?” Abigail asked. Cassienne closed her eyes. The pain grew stronger before slowly passing. Everyone watched her. Ray’s expression changed immediately. “What did you feel?” “Nothing.” Her response was too fast. “That was not nothing.” She finally opened her eyes. “It was just a pain.” “What kind of pain?” “I don’t know. I stood too quickly.” Ray moved closer to her, his expression softened. “Sit dow
