Chapter 11

Author: Toasted Tea
When Xavier returned home, Martha approached him with trembling hands, carrying a framed funeral portrait, a pink urn, and a contract for the purchase of a burial plot.

"Mr. Parker, we found these while cleaning Mrs. Parker's room."

She hesitated before continuing, "Madam... she'd been preparing to leave this world for some time. I think she may have lost the will to live a long time ago."

Xavier's eyes reddened instantly. He snatched the items from Martha's hands and stared at them in disbelief

At the hospital, the examination results confirmed that although Lily and Yates had suffered serious injuries, both would survive. They would also be facing prison time.Neither the Quinns nor the Parkers had any intention of letting them off the hook. When the police arrived to take them away, Lily became hysterical, struggling violently against the officers."Do you have any idea who I am? I'm Mrs. Parker! Xavier Parker's wife! You can't arrest me!"Xavier, I'm the one you're supposed to love! I finally got a second chance! I finally made it back to a time when you and Riley weren't together, when you hadn't married her! Why are you doing this to me?"You're going to regret treating me like this for the rest of your life! If Riley dies, there'll be nothing standing between us anymore! I'm the one you really love!"She screamed until her voice was raw, repeatedly trying to throw herself at Xavier. He dodged her without hesitation, wrapped an arm around Riley, and led her away."No mat

The message went unanswered for a long time, though Xavier wasn't surprised. After leaving the Quinn residence, he spent his recovery dealing with the rumors surrounding the sudden breakdown of relations between the two families.People had been gossiping, with many assuming Riley must have done something wrong. Xavier couldn't bear the thought of anyone speaking ill of her, so he moved quickly to put an end to the speculation. Before long, the rumors died down.Still, everyone in Jaspen City's upper circles knew that the Parker and Quinn families were no longer as close as they once had been.Although the wedding had officially been postponed, most people doubted it would ever take place.Countless people waited eagerly for the drama between the two prominent families to unfold. But instead of the scandal they'd anticipated, they watched the Parkers hand several business projects over to the Quinns. The two families had always been close friends, though they sometimes competed in busi

Xavier was so weak that even breathing pulled at the countless wounds covering his body, sending pain through him. Blood loss had left his vision fading in and out, and he barely had the strength to speak. He didn't bother trying.Surrounded by the familiar scent that was uniquely Riley's, he felt a rare sense of peace. It had been so long since they'd shared such a peaceful, happy moment. As Riley busied herself tending to his wounds, a faint smile crept across Xavier's lips, and the tension gradually left his face.Only after making sure his injuries weren't life-threatening did Riley finally relax. By then, Xavier had closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. His exhaustion seemed to rub off on her, and before long, she curled up beside him and fell asleep too, forgetting even to clean the blood off herself. Some habits were so deeply ingrained that they never truly disappeared. Despite all the love and hatred they'd shared in their previous lives, their sleeping bodies still instin

"Xavier Parker, have you forgotten everything we taught you about honor, integrity, and basic decency? Riley's parents were wrong to drive drunk in our last life, but we have laws to punish people for that! "You should have handed them over to the authorities and let the courts deal with them. Even if they deserved to pay with their lives, you had no right to torture them like that!"And Riley did absolutely nothing wrong! She suffered so much for something she had no part in. How could you treat her so cruelly?"When you told us you wanted to marry her, you promised to treat her well for the rest of her life. After everything you put her through, how could you possibly expect her to forgive you?"Arthur was furious. He struck Xavier repeatedly with his cane, putting all his strength into every blow.Xavier endured the beating with a few muffled grunts, refusing to complain even when his back was covered in bruises.Richard and Eleanor merely shook their heads and sighed. Neither spok

"Do you have any idea how much it hurt when I found out about the first time you kissed Lily? The first time you slept with her?"I tried so hard to forgive you, to understand you, to find our way back to what we once had. But you kept hurting me. I was in so much pain, Xavier. My heart hurt so badly. How could you not see that?"And now you want me to forgive you? How am I supposed to do that?"She pressed her slender fingers against his chest, but the gentle touch felt like an enormous weight bearing down on his heart.Xavier's eyes filled with sorrow, and the pain was so overwhelming he could barely breathe."I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."In this second life, their positions had been completely reversed. Only now did Xavier truly understand what Riley had felt all those times she'd begged him for mercy. Her tears fell into his palm, each drop making his heart ache. Yet beyond apologizing, he had no idea what else to say.Everything that had happened between him and Lily in their pre

Riley remained silent, too. Her eyes were filled with pain, and she had no idea what to say.In the end, Xavier was the first to break the silence."We've all been given a second chance. Whatever we owed each other in our past lives, we've already paid for it. Can't we finally put everything behind us and start over?"Before Riley could answer, he pulled her into his arms, overwhelmed with relief at having her back."Riley, I can't go through losing you again. I regret everything. I'm so sorry..."He held her desperately tight, as though he wanted to make them one so they would never have to be separated again.Riley, however, felt nothing but an aching emptiness. She was so terribly tired. She let Xavier hold her for a long time, but she never once returned his embrace.Something about her silence made his heart sink, plunging deeper and deeper until it felt as though he'd fallen into an abyss."Xavier, I'm tired. Can we please just go our separate ways in this life?"She looked up at
