Chapter 3

Author: Toasted Tea
Unable to bear watching them hold each other any longer, Riley got up and left the restaurant. She drove into the night, the neon lights outside her windows blurring as tears streamed down her cheeks. She wiped them away, but more kept coming, no matter how hard she tried.

She'd thought she'd gone numb long ago. Apparently, it could still hurt.

Just then, a white figure suddenly darted out from the side of the road.

Bang!

Riley slammed on the brakes, her whole body jolting as she looked up to see someone thrown into the air in front of her car before landing heavily on the pavement.

Was that Lily?!

She scrambled out of the car and ran toward the fallen figure on trembling legs. Sure enough, Lily was lying on the road, a horrifying pool of blood spreading beneath her.

"Lily!"

Xavier's furious roar came from behind her. He rushed over like a madman and scooped the unconscious Lily into his arms, turning a murderous glare on Riley.

"Was killing my entire family not enough for you people? Why do you have to go after her too?!"

Riley shook uncontrollably. "I didn't... She ran out in front of my car..."

Xavier refused to listen. Carrying Lily, he climbed into another car that had just pulled up. His eyes red with rage, he barked one final order before leaving.

"Take her to the hospital and make her kneel outside the emergency room to atone for what she's done!"

Two bodyguards seized Riley and roughly shoved her into another vehicle.

At the hospital, Xavier stood at the far end of the corridor outside the emergency room, his entire body rigid with tension. He looked like a blade drawn from its sheath, ready to strike at any moment.

Riley was forced to kneel on the cold floor. Her knees ached terribly, but she didn't dare move.

"If anything happens to her, Riley, I'll make you pay with your life."

His voice was ice-cold, every word cutting into her heart. She kept her head lowered as tears fell silently onto the floor.

Tick. Tock.

Time dragged on until, finally, the light above the emergency room went out.

The doctor emerged and removed his mask, his expression grave.

"Mr. Parker, Miss West suffered kidney damage in the accident. She urgently needs a kidney transplant, or her life will be at risk."

Xavier's expression changed instantly. "Then find a match! Now!"

The doctor nodded. "Miss West has type B blood. We'll need a donor with a compatible blood type."

Xavier's gaze shifted to Riley.

"She's the same blood type as Lily. Test her."

Riley's head snapped up, her entire body trembling as she stared at him.

He wanted her to give Lily one of her kidneys?

She tried to flee, but the bodyguards immediately restrained her. Xavier approached and looked down at her without a trace of warmth in his eyes.

"Riley, you owe me this, and you owe Lily too. You don't get to say no!"

Tears blurred her vision as she shook uncontrollably.

"Xavier..." Her voice broke. "Are you really going to do this to me?"

He gave no answer. Instead, he turned to the doctor and ordered coldly, "Get the surgery arranged. Now!"

Before Riley was wheeled into the operating room, Xavier signed the surgical consent form as her husband.

Lying on the operating table beneath the blinding surgical lights, Riley found herself drifting back to the past.

When they were fifteen, Xavier had carried her on his back for three blocks to the hospital because she had a fever. At eighteen, he'd been so distressed when she cut her finger while preparing food that he'd never allowed her into the kitchen again. At twenty, he'd stayed awake all night applying ointment to her skin when an allergic reaction left her covered in rashes.

There had been a time when even the slightest discomfort on her part was enough to bring tears to his eyes. If he could have taken her pain upon himself, he would have done it without hesitation.

"Riri, I'll always protect you. I'll never let you get hurt again."

Yet now, the man who had personally sent her to the operating table was that very same Xavier.

I finally made it back to a time when you and Riley weren't together, when you hadn't married her! The message went unanswered for a long time, though Xavier wasn't surprised. After leaving the Quinn residence, he spent his recovery dealing with the rumors surrounding the sudden breakdown of relations between the two families.People had been gossiping, with many assuming Riley must have done something wrong. Xavier was so weak that even breathing pulled at the countless wounds covering his body, sending pain through him. Blood loss had left his vision fading in and out, and he barely had the strength to speak. He didn't bother trying.Surrounded by the familiar scent that was uniquely Riley's, he felt a rare sense of peace. It had been so long since they'd shared such a peaceful, happy moment. As Riley busied herself tending to his wounds, a faint smile crept across Xavier's lips, and the tension gradually left his face.Only after making sure his injuries weren't life-threatening did Riley finally relax. By then, Xavier had closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. His exhaustion seemed to rub off on her, and before long, she curled up beside him and fell asleep too, forgetting even to clean the blood off herself. Some habits were so deeply ingrained that they never truly disappeared. "Xavier Parker, have you forgotten everything we taught you about honor, integrity, and basic decency? Riley's parents were wrong to drive drunk in our last life, but we have laws to punish people for that! "You should have handed them over to the authorities and let the courts deal with them. Even if they deserved to pay with their lives, you had no right to torture them like that!"And Riley did absolutely nothing wrong! She suffered so much for something she had no part in. How could you treat her so cruelly?"When you told us you wanted to marry her, you promised to treat her well for the rest of her life. After everything you put her through, how could you possibly expect her to forgive you?"Arthur was furious. He struck Xavier repeatedly with his cane, putting all his strength into every blow.Xavier endured the beating with a few muffled grunts, refusing to complain even when his back was covered in bruises.Richard and Eleanor merely shook their heads and sighed. "Do you have any idea how much it hurt when I found out about the first time you kissed Lily? The first time you slept with her?"I tried so hard to forgive you, to understand you, to find our way back to what we once had. But you kept hurting me. I was in so much pain, Xavier. My heart hurt so badly. How could you not see that?"And now you want me to forgive you? How am I supposed to do that?"She pressed her slender fingers against his chest, but the gentle touch felt like an enormous weight bearing down on his heart.Xavier's eyes filled with sorrow, and the pain was so overwhelming he could barely breathe."I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."In this second life, their positions had been completely reversed. Only now did Xavier truly understand what Riley had felt all those times she'd begged him for mercy. Her tears fell into his palm, each drop making his heart ache. Yet beyond apologizing, he had no idea what else to say.Everything that had happened between him and Lily in their pre

Riley remained silent, too. Her eyes were filled with pain, and she had no idea what to say.In the end, Xavier was the first to break the silence."We've all been given a second chance. Whatever we owed each other in our past lives, we've already paid for it. Can't we finally put everything behind us and start over?"Before Riley could answer, he pulled her into his arms, overwhelmed with relief at having her back."Riley, I can't go through losing you again. I regret everything. I'm so sorry..."He held her desperately tight, as though he wanted to make them one so they would never have to be separated again.Riley, however, felt nothing but an aching emptiness. She was so terribly tired. She let Xavier hold her for a long time, but she never once returned his embrace.Something about her silence made his heart sink, plunging deeper and deeper until it felt as though he'd fallen into an abyss."Xavier, I'm tired. Can we please just go our separate ways in this life?"She looked up at
