Chapter 1

I had just taken off my headphones when my fiancee, Seren Arden, stepped out of the room.

She stopped when she saw me. "When did you get here?"

I looked up at her. "Just now."

Ronan Holt came out behind her, wearing his usual easy grin. "Hey, Adrian. We were just messing around in there. You didn't happen to hear us, did you?"

He deliberately moved to my right side, where he knew I had trouble hearing.

Seren frowned and shot him a look. "Do you ever stop fooling around?"

Ronan shrugged. "My bad. I wasn't thinking. Can't blame me for forgetting Adrian's got a bad ear, though. I'll make sure I stand on his left next time."

A few of the bridesmaids and groomsmen nearby laughed.

I looked at Seren. There had been a time when anyone making a joke about my hearing would have wiped the smile straight off her face.

She used to tell me there was nothing shameful about not being able to hear properly. The people rude enough to mock me for it were the ones who should be embarrassed.

She simply took the sheet with our wedding vows from Ronan's hand and passed it to me. "Don't read too much into it. Ronan just doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut."

I took the page from her. It was covered in edits, whole lines crossed out and rewritten. I'd originally written, "Thank you for being my right ear all these years."

Ronan had changed it to, "Thank you for putting up with me all these years."

A few raindrops had soaked into the paper, blurring the ink along one edge.

Seren noticed and reached for it. "I'll have someone print you another copy."

I stepped back before she could take it. "Don't bother."

Her hand froze in midair.

"Adrian Corbett." The moment she used my full name, I knew she was annoyed.

Beside us, Ronan cleared his throat. "Yeah, that's on me. Guess I took the joke too far and stole your thunder."

He gave an awkward little laugh before adding, "It's your wedding, after all. I only came to help, and somehow I ended up making everything about me. Can't blame you for being pissed. My fault."

Something in his words seemed to remind Seren that we were still standing there in front of everyone. She walked over and took my hand. "Come on. It's pouring out there again. We should head back before it gets worse."

Her palm was cold against mine. But all I could think about was what I'd heard earlier.

"The invitations are already out. What am I supposed to do, call off the wedding now?"

So that was it. Seren wasn't marrying me because she wanted to. She was marrying me because backing out now would be too much of a mess.

I gently slipped my hand out of hers. "It's fine. I'll get back on my own."

Seren stared at her empty palm, her expression darkening. "What's wrong with you now?"

Now.

That one word landed harder than it should have. A faint ringing started in my ears.

Ronan stepped forward, lowering his voice. "I seriously didn't mean anything by it. Look, why don't I just apologize to him?"

Seren put out an arm to stop him. "Don't. Adrian isn't that petty."

Ronan raised an eyebrow at me. "See? She still can't stand to see me take the blame."

Seren quickly moved half a step away from him, a flicker of discomfort crossing her face. "Adrian, he's talking nonsense."

I nodded.

She kept looking at me, as if she were waiting for me to say something else.

I didn't. I simply folded the paper with my vows and slipped it into my pocket. "I'm heading out."

Seren stopped me. "The wedding is in three days. Can you please stop acting like this?"

My gaze dropped to the bracelet around her wrist. I'd given it to her for her birthday last year. Now the same bracelet hung from the hand blocking my way, and for some reason, it looked less like a gift and more like a shackle.

I looked back at her. "Seren, I'm tired."

Her frown deepened. "If you're tired, go home and get some sleep. Don't start acting up now of all times."

Ronan leaned out from behind her. "Hey, Adrian, there's a ton to rehearse before the wedding. If you're not feeling up to it, I can always fill in for you. I did a pretty decent job with the vows just now."

Someone laughed again. Seren didn't laugh this time. But she didn't tell him to stop, either.

I looked away from her and picked up my headphones.

Ronan must have knocked them earlier. One side of the adjustable headband had been jarred loose, and when I put them on, the right ear cup sat crooked. Wind slipped through the gap.

I stared at them for a couple of seconds. Then I adjusted them as best I could, covered my ears, and walked out into the rain.

Behind me, Seren's voice carried faintly through the downpour. "Enough with the sulking, Adrian. If you actually walk away from me today, don't expect me to come chasing after you again."

I stopped for a moment. Then I kept walking.

A year later, I started a new job.I was designing educational programs for a hearing rehabilitation center, which meant I spent most of my days around kids. Some cried at the slightest thing, while some barely spoke. Some stuffed their hearing aids into their pockets the second no one was looking and stubbornly refused to put them back on.Whenever that happened, I'd crouch down and talk to them at eye level, always making sure I stood where they could hear me best.I never rushed them. I never pushed either.Sometimes Vesper would watch me and laugh. "At this point, you're better at this than I am."I grinned at her. "Then I guess I should have your job."She handed me whatever folder she was carrying. "Be my guest, Mr. Corbett."That made me laugh.Life moved on quietly. There was no dramatic moment when everything suddenly became better. One morning, I simply woke up and realized I couldn't remember the last time Seren had kept me awake at night. She came by the center a

Seren didn't come after me that day. For the next week, though, she texted me every morning.Sometimes it was nothing more than a "good morning".Sometimes it was a photo. There was one of the new headphones she'd bought and then a replacement pair of the cufflinks, identical to the originals. And finally, the page of vows Ronan had scribbled all over. She'd had someone print out a new copy before sending me a picture."I got the original words back," she typed.I stared at the photograph."Seren, thank you for being my right ear all these years."Once, every word of that had been true. But that was a long time ago.I didn't reply. That weekend, I volunteered at a community event for children with hearing loss. Vesper had invited me. She said a lot of kids struggled when they first started wearing hearing aids, especially because they were afraid their classmates would make fun of them.As I reached the activity room, I saw a little girl standing near the doorway, crying with

Word that the wedding was off eventually got around. Our group chat with mutual friends was active all day. Some people wanted to know if we'd had a fight. Some told me not to make a decision I'd regret.A few messaged me privately."For what it's worth, Ronan really was crossing a lot of lines toward the end."I read the messages but didn't reply. That evening, Seren's mother, Karen Walsh, called me. "Adrian, I'm not calling to pressure you just because I'm older, and I'm not going to beg you to take Seren back."She let out a quiet sigh. "I just want to hear it from you. Are you and Seren really over?"I looked out at the night beyond my window. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Arden."There was a brief silence on the other end."You don't owe me an apology. I know my daughter. She stopped respecting your boundaries because she got too comfortable with how much you'd put up with. She started treating your patience like something she was entitled to."I said nothing.Karen continued, "I've

Vesper took my jacket from me as naturally as if she'd done it a hundred times."Is the ringing in your right ear still bothering you today?"I touched my ear. "It's better than it was a couple of days ago."Behind us, Seren's voice turned cold. "Adrian, who is she?"I glanced back. "My audiologist."Vesper gave Seren a polite nod. "Hello."Seren didn't return the greeting. Her gaze had settled instead on my suit jacket draped over Vesper's arm. "Do audiologists usually provide this much personal service? Carrying a man's jacket around for him?"Vesper smiled, completely unbothered. "Mr. Corbett just finished an intensive round of physical therapy on his right shoulder. His doctor doesn't want him lifting or putting too much strain on that arm for the next two hours. I was already walking with him, so I offered to carry his jacket."Seren's expression shifted. "When did you get so comfortable letting other people take care of you?"There was an edge to her voice that sounded s

On my third day back at my own place, Seren called me for the first time. I let my phone ring.A message came through a moment later. "I've managed to keep the wedding situation contained for now. When are you coming back? We need to talk."I replied with just two words. "We don't."A few minutes later, another message appeared. "Enough, Adrian."I stared at it and suddenly laughed. My hearing hadn't been great lately. Whenever I got stressed, the ringing in my right ear tended to linger.Seren used to know that. Whenever it happened, she'd lower her voice around me. But my apartment had been quiet these past few days—quiet enough that, for the first time in a long time, I could finally hear myself think. That afternoon, I went to the hospital for a follow-up appointment. After reviewing my test results, the doctor told me everything was stable."We can make some adjustments to your hearing aid. Have you been under a lot of stress lately?""I was."The doctor looked at me. "An

The wedding planner was silent for a few seconds before texting, "Mr. Corbett, are you sure?"I looked at the broken headphones jutting out of the trash bag. "I'm sure."After I sent that message, I didn't feel much of anything.I just started going through the boxes in the living room, one at a time. The wedding favors went into a box to be returned.I tore up the place cards. The guest book went into the bottom drawer of a cabinet. I intended to throw away the wedding album too.But when I reached the last page, my hand froze. The photo had been taken the day we got engaged. Seren was standing on my right, her head lowered as she carefully adjusted the hearing aid behind my ear. There was such tenderness in her eyes.I stared at the picture for two seconds. Then I closed the album.A key turned in the lock. Seren was back. She walked in, took one look at the open boxes scattered across the living room, and her expression darkened. "What are you doing?"I taped the last box of
