Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
Although the money I earned couldn't compare to even a fraction of what Camille gave me, I could spend it with a clear conscience, and that was enough.

I had initially managed to save quite a bit. But when I found out Camille was going to marry me, I emptied my savings to buy this suit so I could be worthy of her.

It turned out she'd only been playing with me.

Now my bank account was so empty that I couldn't even afford a plane ticket.

I accepted the part-time job, then washed up and went to bed.

The next morning, I opened my door and stepped into the hallway just as Christopher emerged from Camille's bedroom, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

He seemed to have forgotten everything that had happened the night before and greeted me warmly.

Just then, Camille approached with two cups of warm milk.

When our eyes met, a flicker of guilt crossed her face before she explained, "Christopher is having some issues with his family, so he'll be staying here for a while.

"He's been picky since he was a child and can't sleep well in a guest room, so I let him have my bedroom."

I responded casually, unable to understand why she felt the need to explain any of this to me.

Before I could make sense of it, Camille offered me a cup of warm milk.

Beside me, Christopher had already taken his. He smiled at Camille and said, "Camille, you're still the best to me. Ten years have passed, and you still remember all my little habits."

So that was it.

Camille didn't have a habit of drinking milk in the morning. And with her pride, she would never go out of her way to do something as trivial as warming milk for me.

Apparently, I had Christopher to thank for the unexpected consideration. The fact that Camille had warmed an extra cup for me was already more than I could have expected.

I waved it away to show that I didn't want it, and Camille didn't insist. "Christopher, I'll have the maids clear out my bedroom. You can move in there."

Christopher didn't answer. Instead, he leaned against my doorway and peered into my room. "Camille, I want to stay in this room. Is that okay?"

Camille barely gave it a thought before agreeing. "Sure. This room, then. There are plenty of guest rooms. It doesn't matter which one Oliver sleeps in."

Only after they'd already made the decision did Christopher put on a show of asking for my opinion. "Sorry. I completely forgot to ask if you were okay with it."

I shrugged. "I don't mind."

I was leaving anyway, so it didn't matter where I slept. Besides, this was Camille's house. What right did I have to make decisions about anything here?

I turned and headed downstairs.

Camille hurried after me, apparently intending to explain further. "Oliver, Christopher is only staying temporarily. You—"

Before she could finish, Christopher suddenly groaned from behind us. "Camille, my head hurts so badly. It must be because I drank too much last night."

Whatever else she'd intended to say to me was instantly forgotten.

She hurried back to support him and wiped the sweat from his forehead with obvious concern. "Ugh. You can't even hold your liquor. Why did you have to go crazy and drink so much last night?"

Christopher leaned against Camille's shoulder and looked at me, undisguised mockery filling his eyes.

I ignored him, left the house, and headed straight to the address I'd been given for work.

Once I arrived, I changed into my uniform in the dressing room and put on the standard mask and cap.

All the part-time workers lined up together, and the restaurant manager put us through two hours of emergency training.

He repeatedly reminded us, "This isn't the first time any of you have worked with us, so you all know the rules, right?

"Today's event is a welcome-back banquet for a wealthy heiress' boyfriend, who has just returned to the country. Make sure you take excellent care of them."

The manager repeatedly stressed just how wealthy and demanding the guests were. If we managed to satisfy them, the tips alone could amount to several months' wages.

Once the training ended, we followed the regular staff into the banquet hall and began carrying out the dishes one after another.

Camille was consumed by guilt. Before she realized it, she found herself standing before the grave of Oliver's grandmother."Grandma, I lost Oliver," she murmured as she cleared away the withered flowers in front of the grave. Tears slipped down her cheeks and fell uncontrollably to the ground.Camille still remembered the old woman lying in her hospital bed, clutching her hand and pleading with her, "Miss Harrington, I know you're a good person. I also know there's such a difference between you and my Ollie. The two of you may not make it to the end."We're truly grateful that you paid my medical expenses and gave this old lady a little more time to live."I only hope that, for my sake, you'll remember the 10 years you've shared. If he ever leaves, please don't make things too difficult for him."Back then, Camille hadn't taken her words seriously at all. She had believed that Oliver stayed by her side simply for the money. As long as the Harringtons didn't go bankrupt, he would

I'll just buy you another one."Camille had been about to return to her room, but his words sent her into a sudden rage. She rarely raised her voice at Christopher, but this time, she couldn't hold back. "Get out. Get out of my house. Oliver is my boyfriend. I won't allow you to humiliate him."Christopher's temper flared at the sight of her pointing at him and berating him. "What the hell is wrong with you

"I want to see all the security footage from the day Oliver left."The housekeeper wiped the sweat from his forehead and hastily made up an excuse. "The cameras happened to malfunction, and the backup from that day was lost. You see..."Camille let out a soft scoff. Did they really think such petty tricks could fool her? All the security cameras in her home had backups. She returned to her room, contacted her assistant, and had a copy of the footage sent over. As soon as she received it, she opened the file and began watching. When the footage showed the housekeeper stopping Oliver and forcibly searching his suitcase, Camille slammed the cup beside her onto the floor.Even she had never treated Oliver that way. How dare these bootlicking dogs humiliate him in public? She forced herself to keep watching. Even after searching his suitcase, they still refused to let him leave. "Miss, are you listening?"Camille had been lost in thought and hadn't heard the housekeeper. His voice pulled her from her memories."Right away. Book me the earliest flight available. Camille flew into a rage. "Oliver is my boyfriend. Who gave you the nerve to kick him out?"Her furious scolding frightened the housekeeper, who stammered out an explanation. "M-Miss, there's been a misunderstanding. Mr. Reed left on his own..."Camille's agitation only grew. "Find him and bring him back immediately, or you're all fired!"She hung up, grabbed her purse, and headed for the door.Christopher followed her. "What happened?"Camille didn't answer. She called for the driver and ordered him to take them home. She had lost all interest in staying for the rest of the welcome-back banquet.Christopher followed her into the car. When he learned that Oliver had left, he raised an eyebrow. "Don't worry too much. He's obsessed with money. Do you really think he could bear to leave you, his rich benefactor?"I bet he's just upset because you embarrassed him in front of everyone today. This whole running-away-from-home stunt is his way of threatening you."You're not actually

"Victor, think of this money as a loan," I said.Victor didn't say anything. He simply patted me on the shoulder and assured me, "Don't worry. With that woman blacklisting you, none of the major establishments will hire you anymore. But I've got you. I have plenty of connections, so I'll find you other jobs later."I nodded gratefully. Just as I was wondering how I could raise some money, a notification popped up on my phone: an 1,000-dollar deposit had hit my account. It was payment from one of my previous part-time jobs. They had owed me the money for several months, and it had finally come through.I immediately used my phone to buy a plane ticket overseas. Then I turned to Victor. "Victor, thank you for taking care of me all these years. I'm leaving, and I probably won't be coming back. Once I find a job and get settled over there, I'll pay back the 200 dollars."After saying goodbye to Victor, I returned to the house to collect my identification documents and belongings. The
