Chapter 3 Broken Promise

Author: Sweet Tea Nini
"You'll be there, right?"

Zack smiled. "I made a promise. I will be there."

The door clicked shut, and silence settled over the house. He had broken a lot of promises he made to me. I pulled out a tissue, crouched down, and wiped away the trail of water he had left across the floor.

I was a clean freak, and I did not want to stay with a filthy man.

Dora, however, was still far too young. She still had admiration for her father.

I was reminded of the promise we made before she went to sleep. That robbed me of my sleepiness, so I scrolled through my socials.

The first post was Wendy's. She said there was someone who would accept her for who she was, and the picture showed a transaction history for a million dollars.

Something hit me.

Zack gave her millions on a whim, while he barely gave me any presents even though we were married for seven years. After all, he was busy working on his business, while I was busy taking care of him and Dora. I did not have the time to care about presents.

But now I had time to think. And I finally understood something. Life did not feel the same with every person.

Zack never remembered my birthdays, and he never joined Dora's parent-teacher meetings. Even when it was our anniversary, all he did was verbally promising me he would show me the world when he was rich.

After he was inducted into the Shaws, he celebrated Wendy's birthday. He bought out the amusement park for a day and stayed with her until midnight to gaze at the stars, all because she wanted it.

He gave all his love to Wendy, and all he had for me was impatience. And whenever I complained, all he ever said to me was, "Stop throwing a tantrum."

My chest was feeling stuffy. This villa was starting to feel alien to me. It was cold and unwelcoming. The small 600-square-feet rental made me feel safer than this.

Though life was a struggle back then, at least I had a home. After I gave birth to Dora, we were out of money. We could not even afford the heater and electricity. Even Dora's milk was made with cold water.

I remembered how Zack got tearful as he handed me a hot sweet potato. "This is all my fault. I should've been more careful. Dora shouldn't suffer. When I get rich, I'll get a vasectomy."

He humbly made all those promises because he was worried I might leave him. He was worried I might resent him for being poor. Whenever I cried and said it was freezing, he would hold my hands against his chest.

He was by my side when we were at our lowest years ago. I wondered how he could change so much in the blink of an eye.

Right after I packed up my and Dora's stuff, Zack's phone rang. It was Wendy.

I did not want the sound to wake Dora, so I carried it towards the staircase before answering. Wendy's arrogant voice immediately came through. "You want to marry me? What about Cynthia? I'm not going to be a mistress, you know."

A long silence later, Zack chuckled. "I held that wedding with her overseas and got a fake marriage certificate. You're the only one I ever wanted to marry."

The call ended, and my heart froze. The certificate was fake, and so was his love. Still, this was for the better. I did not need to see him or ask him to sign the papers.

I pulled out the fake certificate from my suitcase and placed it on the nightstand.

I refused to keep anything that was not mine.

Zack did not come back, not even when it was already the next day.

I joined the parent-teacher meeting alone. When it was time for the race, the other kids had their fathers leading them. I was the only mother in the lane.

But there was one last thing I needed to do to him, so I took Dora home.Once she woke up, I gave her a rolling pin. "Beat him. Give him the pain you felt that night."A little girl could not hit that hard, and she was an angel. She did not do it. Instead, she looked at Zack with red eyes. "You promised you'd take me to kindergarten, but you were with Ms. Wood. It hurt when you hit me. I would have forgiven you if you had just held me, but I didn't even see you once when I was in the hospital. Then, I realized you weren't my father. My father loves me. He'd never hurt me. I hate you, Mr. Shaw."Every word she said made Zack lower his head further and further. He started to cry, and he wanted to explain, but he could not even find an excuse. In the end, he kneeled on one knee and met Dora's eyes. "I'm sorry. Can you forgive me, Dora?"Dora shook her head, showing maturity far beyond her age. "I hate your family and the adults who keep pushing me around. I love this place. I lov

A crowd suddenly formed around us. A lot of them were parents of Dora's classmates."Hey, are you trying to kidnap the girl?""Yeah! Everyone knows Dora's father is dead! What are you up to?"They stepped up and blocked Zack, then some of them signaled to me, telling me to grab Dora and leave.I nodded gratefully and left with Dora in my arms, but I underestimated how far he would go.…Right after I was done making dinner, someone rang the doorbell. Zack was outside, and he was covered in bruises. "Let's talk."I nodded. "Half an hour." I closed the door, and Dora asked me who it was. I said it was a stranger. She stopped asking and resumed eating. Once she was done eating, I placed her in her room and played some cartoon shows for her. Then, I opened the door and let Zack in. He gulped. I touched the plate. It was still warm. "Have something to eat if you don't mind."Zack ate slowly, and he offered to do the dishes. I did not stop him. A free meal was the last act of me

There was a kindergarten right beside the orphanage, and an elementary school sat nearby as well. I settled in and signed Dora up for kindergarten. To make childrearing easier, I bought a house with the money I saved up before I got married. I was the sole owner. The moment I got the deed, I knew I had a home once more. It was a small home that was no bigger than 400 square feet, and it housed only me and Dora.I worked as a designer for a few years after I graduated. After I got pregnant with Dora, I quit my job and became a housewife. Most of the interviews in the town ended in failure, but a listed company's branch site hired me. However, I had to give them something satisfactory during my three-month probation. My resume was nothing compared to those who graduated from famous colleges. Even their creativity was a lot better than mine. But I knew how to go with the market. I had seen a lot of so-called socialites during my time at the Shaws', and I had talked to a lot of them.

Zack remembered how flustered he was right after he became a father. The first person Dora saw when she opened her eyes was him. The first word she said was 'Daddy'.Somewhere along the way, he started getting busy with work and finding investments. He forgot he had a family that was waiting for him. After he was taken back into the fold, all he wanted to do was get back at those who had humiliated him. Then, when it was Wendy's turn, his adolescent urge took over his mind, and he saw Wendy as something out of his reach when she was nothing more than dirt.Zack stood before our house, but he could not bring himself to open the door. He opened his phone and set me as his pinned contact. He texted me, asking where I was, but the message could not be sent.Panicked, he barged into the house, but it was empty. As he changed his shoes, he picked up the injury report from the ground. Every word hit him like a blade. Multiple soft tissue contusions in Dora's head, a slight concussion, w

He was hesitating. Zack could not remember why he liked Wendy. He used to be a sewer rat everyone hated, and no one knew who his father was. When he found out his father's name, he happily sought him out, thinking it would be a reunion. His father vehemently denied Zack was his son and wanted to kick him out. Wendy was visiting at the time. She chuckled and said Zack could stay. At least he could be a pet or entertainment.Zack only caught the first part of the sentence. He filtered the disdain that followed. But now, standing beside Wendy at the altar, he suddenly remembered the entire insult.Wendy had never seen him as a human. He had been nothing more than a pet for her entertainment. He realized only I was the one who loved him as a person. The guests were celebrating and cheering for them, but he felt like he was in another world. He was blinded by the power the Shaws had. In the pursuit for fame and fortune, he had forgotten everything only began because he wanted me and Dor

We were done from that point onward. At the same time, a suited-up Zack was doing some networking in the hotel lobby. This wedding was just an excuse to socialize with the business moguls. Wendy was just a little decoration on his list of achievements.Suddenly, Zack's hand shook. The wine splashed against his suit, and his heart skipped a beat. He felt something slipping away from his control, and he looked around, but he found nothing. Then, his phone buzzed, and he opened it up. He scrolled down his list of contacts until he saw the texts I sent him."I'd rather we end it now than torture each other for life. I pray for your happiness. Dora and I will never show up in your world again."Zack clenched his phone, and veins throbbed on the back of his hand. He wanted to find me right away, but he could not let go of the fame and fortune that was waving at him. He checked the time. There was only a little more than one hour before the wedding would come to an end.His plan was to
