Chapter 4

Author: Moore
"Put Irene's name on the house or estate you buy. Consider it my apology to her."

Assuming the document was a property transfer agreement, Cole didn't bother to read the contents carefully. Holding Mae nervously, he turned to me and explained, "Mae was just discharged from the hospital. She has no one to look after her, so I asked her to stay with us for a few days."

I nodded numbly, watching my mate and our pups cautiously help Mae into our house. Then, without looking back, I left his territory and delivered the signed agreement to the council.

After meticulously reviewing it, the clerk stamped it with the official seal. "Ms. Brown, your pair bond with Mr. Grimaldi has been officially terminated. The mind link between you two is also dissolved."

At last… it was all coming to an end.

I returned once more to the Dark Forest and dropped to my knees before Irene's grave, gently wiping the dust from the photo of her smiling face.

"I'm sorry, Irene. I fell in love with the wrong person." My voice was barely audible. "I'm leaving. I don't want them in my life anymore. I'll leave the Blackmoon Pack, find a new pack that will accept me, and start over."

Just then, a gentle breeze brushed through my hair, as if she were answering me.

I smiled through my tears. "Don't worry about me. Many years from now, I'll come and find you at the Moon Goddess' side. When that day comes, I'll still be your big sister!"

On my way back to the pack, I passed by the oldest sacred tree in the forest. It was beneath that very tree that Cole and I had carried out our bonding ceremony. He had given me a wolf fang necklace embedded with a blood crystal and sworn his loyalty to me before the Moon Goddess.

However, after only six years, that vow had already lost its meaning.

I took off the necklace and hung it on one of the tree's branches, along with the moonflower bracelet from my wrist. The pure white blossom that symbolized eternal love had been tainted by our broken bond, its petals already turning yellow and brittle.

I left everything that reminded me of Cole in the place where our story had first begun.

When I returned to his territory, his car slowly pulled up and stopped beside me. Cole awkwardly scratched his nose and said, "Mae's birthday is tomorrow. I promised to take her on a trip for a few days. Since you were planning to spend time with Irene, I didn't tell you."

The back window rolled down, revealing Naveah and Caspian's bright, smiling faces. "Mom!" My pups waved excitedly at me, dressed in matching shirts.

Mae poked her head out between them, and that was when I noticed she was wearing the same outfit as them. Realization dawned on me—the four of them were wearing matching family outfits.

"Soleil, the pups were so excited and wouldn't stop asking to go on a trip with me, so I agreed. Please don't be upset!" she grinned, clearly intending to provoke me.

Yet, to her surprise, I wasn't upset or sad. Instead, I smiled faintly and said, "Happy birthday! I'll sit this one out. Have fun without me."

Cole's eyes widened with surprise before he nodded in approval. "You've finally become more sensible, Soleil. This is great. When I get back, I'll bring gifts for you and Irene!"

Caspian clapped his little hands and chirped, "Mom's good now! She won't hurt Mae anymore!"

I watched their car disappear into the distance, my heart as still as stone. If my love had become a burden to them, then I would take it back. I didn't want them anymore.

After packing up my belongings, I left Cole's territory without a backward glance.

Cole's protectors hurriedly carried him out of the basement and called for the pack healer. After receiving emergency treatment for a full day and night, Cole finally came to."The silver nitrate bullets have penetrated deep into your body and corroded your organs, Alpha. If you had been treated earlier, you would've been fine. But now, it's too late!"Cole didn't seem to hear him. He turned to his Beta and asked, "Have you found Soleil?"His Beta nodded. "We have. Luna was in the northern plains. We've contacted her, and she said she's willing to come back to see you."Cole's eyes lit up. "She's willing to see me?"Hope flickered in his chest. I was willing to see him. He wondered if that meant I had forgiven him."Yes. While you were unconscious, she had already returned to our territory.""Where is she? I'll go get her myself!" Cole tried to sit up. Then, he heard my calm voice. "Don't bother. I'm already here."He froze. His head snapped up, and his gaze was filled with h

Cole suddenly remembered that he hadn't set foot in my room ever since I left. His steps trembled as he walked in, only to find it empty. The windows were wide open, the curtains fluttering in the breeze. Sunlight poured in, lighting up every corner of the room. Yet, the one person he wanted to see was nowhere to be found. Why was everything gone? Our photos, the gifts he had given me, and every trace of my existence were gone, as if I had never been there.A dull ache spread through his chest, as if his heart were pricked by needles. Like a madman, he searched every corner of the room for any proof that I had once loved him. Our matching rings, the trinkets he'd given me… Cole knew I'd always treasured everything he had given me. Even the things he bought on a whim would make me so happy that I'd keep them carefully tucked away. However, there was nothing left now. Panic washed over him as he stared at the empty room. I truly didn't want him anymore. The thought filled him wi

Cole didn't answer his phone until he had left his pack's territory. "Alpha, we found out how Ms. Irene died. Ms. Cooper had secretly swapped the water in your vial with wolfsbane. Ms. Irene was corroded by it, and that's what killed her!" Cole's Beta sent him the surveillance footage, which showed the scene at the temple, where I had called him. He realized belatedly that the call Mae had answered back then was from me. Mae had misled him, and her deception had cost Irene her life. For a moment, he felt as if an invisible hand was squeezing his heart, making it hard for him to breathe. At that moment, he realized that I would never forgive him. His Beta added, "We also found out that Ms. Cooper was never poisoned with wolfsbane by Luna. She staged the whole thing to frame Luna!"Cole felt the world spin around him when he heard that. He realized he had wronged me. He had fallen right into Mae's trap and, without realizing it, killed my younger sister. "Damn it. So, it was yo

Cole hung up the phone and rushed back home. He had always assumed I left home out of anger and would return once I'd calmed down. However, when he found out our mate bond had been dissolved and received news of Irene's death, he wasn't so sure anymore. When he pushed the door open and walked in, Mae's face stiffened with panic. She hadn't expected him to return so suddenly. All she could do was glare at Naveah and Caspian. "Keep your mouths shut. Don't you dare say anything stupid in front of your father!"Naveah and Caspian nodded obediently, though they looked hurt. They hoped their father would notice the marks on their faces, but he never once looked their way. By the time Cole went upstairs, their last ray of hope had dimmed. When they returned to their room, Naveah huffed, "Let's just tell Dad. He'll believe us!"Caspian agreed. "Yeah. Mae's a bad person. She's not our mom!"The two of them ran to Cole and burst into tears. Cole finally noticed the marks on their faces a

Naveah pointed at Mae and introduced her. "This is our new mom. Her name's Mae!"The teacher seemed surprised but didn't comment on it. "Naveah's been missing a lot of classes lately. I just wanted to check in and see what's been going on."Before Mae could respond, Naveah piped up. "Mae said it's fine! She's not like our old mom, who forced us to train all the time. Now, we can do whatever we want!"The teacher shot Mae a complicated look. "This isn't good for the pups, Ms. Cooper. Training requires consistency. If she continues to skip it, she'll only hurt herself! "When the coming-of-age ceremony arrives, she might not be able to shift properly. It could be dangerous for her." After hearing that, Caspian became enraged and shoved the teacher out the door. "Nonsense! Mae's the best! She would never hurt us. "You're the bad one, just like our old mom. You're not welcome here!" Naveah and Caspian kicked the teacher out. Mae sneered behind their backs. Then, she muttered to h

After Mae took over the task of caring for Naveah and Caspian, she never made them get up early or forced them to complete their homework. She let them do whatever they wanted at home. If they wanted sweets, she would have the housekeepers make them.Soon, the day came for Caspian to attend the training camp for young wolves. Naveah was already dressed and ready, waiting for Cole to take her there. Caspian, however, refused to get out of bed. "I don't want to go to training camp, Dad! The training's too difficult."Cole's expression hardened. "No can do. You're the next Alpha; you have to go to training camp to learn how to fight and shift!"The two of them were so focused on arguing that they didn't notice the shadow that flickered across Mae's face. Her lashes fluttered as she shielded Caspian with her body. "Don't be so harsh on him, Cole. He's still young. He doesn't need to start training so soon."Cole hesitated. "But young wolves typically start training at the age of fo
