Chapter 2

Author: Cher
"I just want to know what illness Gianna is suffering from!"

Just then, Jessica's voice rang out outside the tent. She had deliberately raised her volume to ensure that everyone could hear her.

"Jessica, let's go," Liam urged calmly.

Nonetheless, I could detect the hint of impatience hidden within his tone.

"Wait a minute, darling." Jessica clung to his arm as she went on, "Liam, I'm just worried about Gianna. Maybe she really needs help. I'm sure she isn't pretending to be sick."

I exited the tent with Marcus' words still ringing in my ears. Only Liam could save me now, yet he hated me to the bone.

"Gianna!" Jessica suddenly called out to me loudly. "Are you okay? Do you need to head to a better infirmary?"

Despite the sweet and worried tone of her voice, her eyes were filled with malice. More and more pack members were gathering around, whispering to each other.

"There's no way she's sick. With how selfish she is, I'm sure she only came to the treatment center to put on a show. Let's hurry back. We still have tomorrow's border patrol to worry about." Liam tugged on Jessica, seemingly not wanting to waste even a second more here.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I answered placidly.

"Are you really fine, Gianna?" Jessica asked in faux concern. "In that case, why did you come here and buy so many herbs? Come on, tell us. I'm sure Liam won't just stand by and do nothing."

Even as she spoke compassionately, she surreptitiously stuck out her leg. Caught off guard, I tripped over her leg and crashed to the ground. The leather scrolls detailing my medical records were scattered across the floor.

"Oops, I'm so sorry!" Jessica clamped a hand over her mouth, making an exaggerated show of her surprise. "I didn't mean to."

Struggling to my feet, I began to pick up the scrolls, only for Jessica to step on one of them.

"What's this?" She leaned down to pick up the scroll. "A medical report? 'Diagnosis: Patient suffers from aftereffects of bloodline essence removal.'"

My heart seemed to stop beating for several seconds.

Liam strode over quickly and snatched the scroll from Jessica's hands. The shocked look in his eyes morphed into fury, then sheer, unadulterated disdain.

"Gianna, you truly have opened my eyes."

His voice was so icy that it could freeze even the hottest flames. "In a bid to garner sympathy, you even went so far as to make up such a ridiculous lie?"

"I didn't—"

"No?" Liam interrupted me. "Bloodline essence removal? Are you trying to use this method to swindle money?

He suddenly unleashed a burst of power, reducing the scroll he held into scraps.

"Did you think I would believe this crap?" Fury lit up in his eyes. "Seven years ago, you personally told me that you didn't want a weak mate like me, that you wanted to find a stronger Alpha. Now, you're making up this crazy story? Do you think I'm an idiot?"

The spectators' voices grew louder as they started to point and talk about me.

"Oh my goddess, she actually faked a medical record?"

"That's over the line! She truly went all out just so she could garner sympathy, huh?"

"As if it wasn't disgusting enough that she betrayed Alpha Liam back then, now she's even desecrating the sacred sacrifice ritual!"

Jessica, ever the actress, stepped forward to pull on Liam's arm gently. "Liam, calm down. Maybe Gianna really does have her difficulties, and that's why—"

"Don't speak up for her." Liam roughly shook her hand off. "She-wolves like her don't deserve any sort of sympathy."

Subsequently, he turned to face me, not hiding the sheer hatred in his gaze. "Gianna, I'm giving you one last warning. Don't ever use such a despicable tactic in an attempt to catch my attention again. You're no longer worthy of getting even an ounce of emotion from me."

"I understand."

I bowed my head, my voice eerily devoid of emotion.

A smug smile spread across Jessica's face. Hugging Liam's arm to her, she deliberately said as though to flaunt her status, "Liam, let's go. We still have a lot of official matters to handle tomorrow."

"Yeah."

Liam nodded, not sparing me another glance.

They turned to leave, but as Jessica walked past me, she whispered in a volume only I could hear, "Stop wasting your energy, Gianna. Don't bother using such tricks before me again."

I remained kneeling on the ground, staring at the tattered remains of that scroll.

Eventually, the crowd dissipated, leaving me there alone. My hand moved up to clench at my chest, where a silver scar remained from my actions seven years ago.

Even now, Liam was unaware that the Alpha bloodline he had awakened was all due to the bloodline essence I had sacrificed to him—the very legacy that had been passed down in my family for generations.

Then, in the next second, they vanished deeper into the forest.I struggled to my feet to check on the injured werewolf, only to find no one on the ground. It had been a trap. The two wolves had deliberately lured me here. With that realization, I slumped weakly against the tree, feeling my life force rapidly dwindling. My b

"Everyone, I would like to share a special story with you today."The flower shop owner had quickly gained the attention of the netizens after he posted about his interesting encounter with me previously."A young she-wolf came to my shop and used 100 gold coins to buy a Soulrest Tree. She said she wanted it to be planted in a spot that would see the sunrise. Soulrest Trees are meant for the dead, and usually, only elderly werewolves would buy them ahead of time. However, she didn't look as though she were even over 30."The comments section was bursting with activity."Buying a Soulrest Tree at 30? Why?""Maybe she's sick?""Or could it be for someone else?"At the same time, the guardian of the Soulrest Trees at North Hill also posted a similar message. "A young she-wolf reserved the best spot on the hill, saying she wanted to be laid to rest there. Her gaze was calm, with not a hint of fear, almost as though she had been set free and was at peace."The netizens eagerly dug d

"Why haven't you been responding to me?"Liam's voice suddenly rang out in my mind, with barely suppressed fury evident in his tone. The mind-link from our mate bond had long since been cut, so I had no idea how he was getting through to me.At that moment, I sat in a corner of the dilapidated hut I called home, staring at the many unread messages on my phone. For the past three days, he had tried contacting me using the mind-link countless times. "I'm not obligated to respond to you," I answered coldly."Gianna!" His tone became even more anxious. "Where are you now?"Instead of replying, I directly cut off our mind-link. It didn't matter what method he used to contact me—I didn't want to hear his voice at all.All the negative news about me had disappeared from the internet, and the edited videos had also vanished without a trace, as though they had never existed in the first place.I assumed that this was Liam's doing, but why?Pushing that thought aside, I decided to pack

"Gianna, how could you and your friend come up with such a ridiculous lie?" Jessica stepped closer to Liam. "Liam, don't be fooled by their act. Think about what she did to you before.""Yes, that must be a lie," Liam said, forcing himself to regain his cool. "Gianna, you really would do anything to gain sympathy, huh? Even make up such a crazy lie."Bending down to pick up the Flower of Life, he tossed it at me before saying, "Since you've already drunk the wine, here's your flower. If you're truly dying, you'd better quickly find a good spot to bury yourself."Then, he turned to the surrounding guests. "Kick them out of here.""Liam, you can't do this!" Chloe wanted to say more, but the guards stopped her."Hurry up and get them out of here!" Liam ordered without another glance back at us.Suddenly, I coughed up a mouthful of dark red blood as my vision blurred. Right before I blacked out, I saw a figure anxiously running toward me, while the muffled sound of someone calling

"Very well," Liam said as he handed me the jug of wine with not a trace of warmth in his eyes.I accepted the jug and took a whiff, smelling the distinctive bitterness of the Shadowthorn Wine. This wine was absolutely harmless to normal werewolves, but with my weakened bloodline, it was nothing less than poison. Drinking it would definitely worsen my symptoms and suffering."Begin," Liam uttered indifferently.Tilting my head back, I took my first gulp. The bitter liquid slid down my throat and into my stomach, instantly causing it to churn."Hahaha! Look at her face!""Serves her right!""Go on, continue!"The derisive laughter of the guests grew louder and louder. While forcing back my nausea, I drank another two mouthfuls. Every gulp seemed to sap away at the last remnants of my life force. My vision began to turn blurry as my body swayed."Enough!" Liam shouted, suddenly frowning."What?" Jessica said unhappily, "She hasn't finished drinking it yet.""I said, that's enoug

"You there, attendant, pour me a glass of wine."Holding a tray, I was just about to head to a corner of the hall to stand when Jessica's voice rang out from behind me.I didn't turn back and merely continued walking forward. With the mask covering half my face and clad in the leather attire meant for common attendants, I had thought I would be able to blend into the crowd."Wait a minute, that attendant looks somewhat familiar." Jessica raised her voice, deliberately gaining the attention of the surrounding werewolves.Upon hearing that, I increased my speed, wanting to leave the hall as quickly as I could."Hold it right there!" Suddenly, Jessica rushed over to stand in my way. "You spilled wine onto my ceremonial robe just now!""I did not," I calmly replied."Still trying to deny it?" Her hand abruptly darted out to grab the edges of my mask. "Let me see who you are!"I wanted to pull free, but she was a lot stronger than I was. The moment my mask was ripped off, the enti
