She'd barely laid it over me before I opened my eyes.

I smiled at her. "I wasn't asleep. Just resting."

Vivian stopped short, then settled the blanket across my legs.

"It's getting cold out here. You're not dressed for it."

Then she ran through it like a status report. "We found what was left of your mother. It isn't much, but I had a service held for her at the cliff.

"What we recovered went back to her hometown. Eleanor's buried there now, near her own people.

The smile was still sitting on my mouth."Ms. Ashcroft, have some self-respect. We're divorced."I'm not interested in hearing about your household."Do give Felix my regards, though. Tell him that when I'm back in Grayhaven, he and I are going to settle up."Hearing me get all of that out cleanly stopped her cold."You can talk?"Her eyes flooded. "You can talk. Thank God."Simon, what happened with your mother was wrong. I didn't think it through. I only wanted to shock you into speaking."I sent people down the slope afterward to look for the urn—"Simon, I swear to you, I will never treat you like that again. I'll love you the way I should have."Come home. Marry me again."I raised my eyes and looked at her for a long moment."Is that right? Sleeping with Felix outside my mother's room until the shock of it killed her. Was that also something you didn't think through?"She stared. "How do you know about that?"That was the moment the panic took her."Simon, let me e

Eleanor's buried there now, near her own people."I've traced the research-fraud allegation to its source. Counsel is filing the defamation suit."There's also—"I cut her off."Vivian."She stopped."Thank you."When she was dying, my mother kept talking about the persimmon tree outside the house she grew up in.After she was gone, all I could think about was keeping her close, so I buried her at Willowridge. It never occurred to me to send her home.Vivian had thought further than I could.Something finally gave in that guarded face of hers, close to a smile

What nobody expected was that Simon would simply cease to exist. Two full weeks went by.Helena couldn't turn up so much as a shadow of him.Arthur went down to the courthouse himself and pulled the record on those two certified copies. They were real. And the attorney who'd filed the whole thing was Helena's own general counsel, Dana Reeves. When she found out, the woman who'd built a reputation on never losing her composure lost it in the middle of the executive floor."Who told you that you could do this?"I am never divorcing Simon. Did you hide him from me?"You tell him to get back here. I'll let all of it go. His mother's ashes can go back into Willowridge, even."He comes home, he apologizes to Felix, he promises to treat him decently, and everything he pulled never happened."Dana laughed under her breath. She adjusted her glasses and set her resignation letter on the desk. Then she laid the original marital agreement on top of it."You've got a lot on your plate

Helena took the two certified copies and stood there without moving. She could no longer hear a word the man on the phone was saying. She read the names on the papers again and again. Both signature blocks were there, hers beside Simon's, in the same hand she'd used the day they filed for their license. Then she saw the date.Judgment entered. Yesterday. She'd spent all of yesterday with Felix. She'd never set foot in a courtroom with Simon. The line between her brows loosened a little, and she tossed the papers back at Arthur."Don't bring me somebody's idea of a joke again," she said, impatient with him. Then she picked the phone back up. "Tell Simon that forging a couple of documents isn't going to scare me."Until he apologizes to Felix out loud and swears he'll leave him alone, he stays where he is."There was a silence on the other end before Marcus answered, and when he did, he sounded afraid. "Ma'am, somebody took Mr. Caldwell. They came in hard. Our people couldn't

I got to the window in time to watch the locket break apart on the pavement below.Traffic rolled over the pieces, and in a heartbeat there was nothing left of it.My eyes went wide, and every bit of rage I'd swallowed came loose at once. I threw myself at Felix. The words came out of me slurred and shapeless, but they were threats.Felix ducked behind Helena, covering his mouth, smiling over the top of his hand."Helena, what did I tell you?"Push Simon hard enough and he talks."Helena's eyes darkened, as if she were actually weighing whether the method might work. When I came at him again, she shoved me back.I'd already lost too much blood. I went down and couldn't get up again, no matter how long I fought for it.She seemed about to step toward me. Then Felix spoke, sorrowful all of a sudden."Helena, today's the anniversary of when Rocco died."You promised me you'd find him somewhere beautiful to rest."I think Willowridge would be perfect."I just don't know wheth

This time I didn't answer. The air around Helena went cold. She took my jaw in her hand and turned my face until I had to look at her.A cruel little smile pulled at her mouth."If you're so determined to play the bigger person, I'll give you all the room you need."Helena shoved me into the back seat of her car."Felix is having surgery. You're going to look after him."You've taken a knife before. You've got the experience, don't you?"My hand started shaking again, and I touched my stomach without meaning to.There's a scar there.I got it stepping in front of a knife meant for Helena.First year of the marriage. Ashcroft Biomed was climbing fast, and climbing fast makes enemies.A competitor paid someone to put her in the ground.I took the blade instead. At the hospital, Helena held onto me and cried like a kid.She swore she'd spend the rest of her life being good to me.Now she was smiling and telling me I had experience getting stabbed.Somewhere in the fog, a m
