The next day, Melissa went to the office as usual and asked Luke to make her coffee.
Instead, she was informed that he had already completed his resignation procedure and left the company.
Melissa was so furious she was practically ready to tear the entire floor apart.
She had never imagined that Luke would actually go through with resigning after spending the past month accompanying Reuben.
Tearing his resignation letter into shreds did nothing to ease her anger. She got up and headed straight for the old family residence, determined to confront him.
The moment she reached the entrance, the butler came out to greet her and informed her that Luke had moved out the day before.
That sent Melissa over the edge. Her expression darkened as she pulled out her phone and called him.
As soon as the call connected, she launched into a furious tirade without giving him a chance to speak.
“Luke, are you seriously going to keep dragging out this fake marriage act? If you really want to leave, then don’t ever come back!”
Faced with her fury, Luke remained remarkably calm, his tone was as detached as though he were giving a routine work report.
“Ms. Dawn, I won’t be coming back. You can rest assured of that, and I wasn’t lying to you, either. I’m really getting married today.”
Just then, the butler slapped his forehead as though he had suddenly remembered something. He reached into his pocket, took out a wedding invitation, and handed it to her.
“Ms. Dawn, Luke gave me this when he came back yesterday. He asked me to pass it on to you today.”
The moment Melissa saw the words ‘We’re Getting Married!’ embossed in gold on the cover, her face flushed with rage.
She snatched the invitation and tossed it to her chauffeur, ordering him to take her to the wedding venue immediately.
While she was on her way, her thoughts were a chaotic mess. The image of Luke walking away with his suitcase the day before kept replaying in her mind, and her expression grew so dark it seemed like a deadly storm ready to descend.
As soon as the chauffeur parked the car, she flung open the car door and strode toward the elevator.
When she stepped out, she found herself faced with a vast banquet hall filled with rows of tables laid out for the wedding reception. Flowers adorned every corner, from the stage to the floor below. Her heart sank to the very bottom.
Several greeters hurried over to welcome her, but she immediately ordered them to take her backstage.
The moment she saw Luke standing before her in a white wedding suit, the veins in her forehead bulged with fury.
She looked around, but there was no sign of the bride. The clock on the wall read 11:50am. The wedding was due to begin in just ten minutes.
Realizing something was off, Melissa snatched the invitation from her chauffeur hand.
She opened it and saw the name listed under ‘Bride: Giselle Rose.’
Her composure returned in an instant.
“Giselle Rose? Giselle is your wife?”
Melissa shot Luke a sidelong glance, her voice dripping with mockery.
The moment they heard the name, her companions broke into laughter.
“Don’t tell me you mean the eldest daughter of the Rose family? She’d marry the son of a housekeeper?”
“Give me a break! With the Rose family’s status, Luke isn’t even good enough to be her lover!”
Melissa became even more convinced that this was nothing but an elaborate charade he had carefully staged when she heard her friends’ mocking laughter.
At this point, she could not even be bothered to argue with him anymore. For once, she patiently tried to reason with him.
“I’ll let everything that’s happened slide. Just come back with me and we’ll put this behind us.”
Luke calmly straightened his cuff links.
“Thank you for being so understanding, but I’m afraid I can’t go with you. It’s my wedding today and I’m not going anywhere.”
Melissa had never been rejected like this before.
His unwavering resolve sent her temper flaring. She abruptly swept her hand across the nearby champagne tower, sending it crashing to the floor.
She was just about to unleash the tirade she had been holding back when her phone rang, cutting her off.
She lowered her eyes to the incoming call on her screen, and was still deciding whether or not to answer the call or finish tearing into him when Luke suddenly spoke up.
“Mr. Evers is calling. Are you sure you still want to stay here?”
Melissa was absolutely certain this was all a ridiculous stunt. There was no way Luke actually had a bride.
She lifted her chin and looked down at him with icy contempt.
“Of course I'm not staying here. Reuben matters far more to me than you ever could! Go ahead and get married, then. Let’s see who would actually marry you!”
With those words, she turned on her heel and strode out of the wedding venue.
Luke did not say a word. Once she was gone, he made his way to the main hall.
A staff member approached him and asked quietly, “Mr. Taylor, that lady and her friends have left. Would you like us to begin the ceremony now?”
The moment the words left her mouth, the clock struck twelve. The wedding march began to play right on cue, and outside, the sound of a car engine starting drifted through the windows.
A second later, the tightly closed doors swung open...
