Chapter 4

Author: Autumn Leaf
A doting smile curved on Jeremy’s face. “Whitney, pick whatever you like. They’re all on me.”

A shy blush spread across Whitney’s cheeks. “Jeremy, I trust your taste. Why don’t you pick something for me?”

“Alright.”

Jeremy’s gaze swept across the display cabinets before quickly settling on a limited-edition handbag.

“Excuse me, can we take a look at this bag? Whitney, this bag is this year’s new release. It’s small and elegant. It’ll suit you perfectly.”

Next came the clothes.

“Whitney, this ink-blue dress looks stunning. It’ll complement your skin tone beautifully.”

Then came the shoes.

“Whitney, these shoes have a detailed design. The heel isn’t too high, so they’re comfortable but still look classy.”

Several sales associates standing nearby could not help whispering among themselves.

“No way. This is my first time seeing a man who understands women and fashion so well.”

“Exactly. Mr. Fisher really is the perfect man. He’s successful, rich, and has such good taste. Everything he picked is one of our bestsellers.”

“When will I ever meet a man like that? I’m so jealous.”

Hailey shrank into the corner, suddenly finding it hard to breathe. As it turned out, he understood fashion perfectly well; he just never bothered showing her that he did.

After Jeremy became successful, Hailey had bought countless outfits and accessories to match his status. Every time she showed them to him, all excited, he would not even glance up.

He, with his head always buried in work, would say calmly, “I know nothing about women’s fashion. All that matters is that you like it.”

Now, seeing how knowledgeable he was about fashion felt like a knife stabbing straight into her heart.

Whitney soon came out of the fitting room. As expected, the outfit Jeremy had chosen suited her perfectly, as if it had been tailor-made for her, making her look even more alluring.

Jeremy looked at Whitney tenderly, his eyes filled with a softness that could melt hearts. “Whitney, when the company goes public, you’ll stun everyone wearing this. I have a surprise waiting for you that day.”

Taken aback by what she heard, Hailey lost her balance. With a loud crash, she stumbled and knocked over a display rack.

The bodyguards reacted instantly, rushing in and yanking Hailey up. One of them slapped her hard across the face.

“How dare you have the nerve to hide and spy on Mr. Fisher?”

“What’s going on? Didn’t I tell you to clear the place beforehand? How could someone be hiding in here?” Jeremy’s voice was icy.

The lead bodyguard quickly replied, “Sorry, Mr. Fisher. We’ll handle this right away.”

Before Hailey could even call out his name, a hand covered her mouth, and she was dragged away. They pulled her to a deserted corner.

The lead bodyguard cursed viciously. “What bad luck, running into trash like you. Are you trying to ruin my job? Teach her a proper lesson.”

The others immediately surrounded her.

Hailey trembled, fear filling her eyes. “If you touch me, Jeremy will never let you off.”

The men burst into laughter. “Who do you think you are? Dreaming of being Mr. Fisher’s woman?”

Then fists rained down on her body, her head, and her legs. The pain was so overwhelming that she could not even scream for help.

Before losing consciousness, the last thing she saw was Jeremy wrapping an arm around Whitney, who was holding bags upon bags of purchases, as they got into a luxurious Maybach. Her heart felt hollowed out, and strangely, it no longer hurt.

Her thoughts drifted far back in time, when Jeremy never left her side. Every day, he would take her to work in the morning and pick her up in the evening.

She used to joke, “You sure keep a close eye on me. Are you afraid I’ll run away?”

The man would smile shyly and reply, “Of course. You, my wife, are so beautiful. I have to keep a close eye on you. I can’t allow anything to happen to you.”

A young man cycling the girl he loved eventually disappeared around the corner of the street…

When she woke up again, she was lying in a hospital bed. Jeremy sat beside her, his face dark. Seeing her awake, his expression shifted slightly.

“Hailey, who did you offend? How did you get beaten like this? Tell me. I’ll make them pay.”

She struggled to open her mouth, about to speak, when his phone rang.

“Alright, I got it. I’ll be right there.”

With that, Jeremy stood up and walked out, saying to her, “I’ll be back!”

However, he never did; he never came back again.

On the day she was discharged, Hailey felt unusually light. She no longer hoped for Jeremy’s love, and when there was no expectation, there would be no disappointment.

After returning home, Hailey began packing her things. All the memories she shared with Jeremy were carefully scattered throughout the house.

On the living room wall were dried bouquets made from flowers he had given her over the years. On the table sat a pair of matching mugs that they had crafted together. The throw pillows on the sofa were souvenirs from their travels. Even the teddy bear on the bed was the very first birthday gift he had bought her after receiving his paycheck.

Thinking about how all those things had become symbols of shame in Jeremy’s life made her chest feel painfully heavy. The massive mansion resembled a gorgeous cage, yet all these years it had only imprisoned her, consumed by unrequited longing.

George was a top graduate and a well-known psychologist. Young, accomplished, and composed, he fit perfectly into the type of man many women admired, both in appearance and status.Jeremy arrived at George’s office. Seeing the haggard-looking man standing before him, George asked politely, “Sir, do you have an appointment?”“You’re George, right?” Jeremy asked, his tone provocative.“Yes, I am George. And you are…” George looked at him calmly, though he could sense the anger barely contained beneath the surface.Jeremy could no longer suppress the anger within him. “Stay away from Hailey. She’s my woman. You’d better know your place and disappear from her life immediately.”A flicker of surprise crossed George’s gentle expression, but it quickly settled back into calm. He had already guessed who this man was.“You’re Hailey’s ex-husband, aren’t you? She’s mentioned you before.”“Since you know our relationship, you should understand that what she and I had isn’t something an out

Jeremy settled into a hotel near Iris’s home. Every morning, without fail, he appeared at her door with fresh flowers still dotted with morning dew. He personally cooked Hailey’s favorite meals, packed them up, and delivered them. He even wrote several love letters, asking the housekeeper to pass them to Hailey.A week later, Hailey finally decided to confront him. “Jeremy, what exactly are you trying to do?”Her tone was distant, tinged with disdain.“Hailey, I was wrong. I’m here to admit it. Can you give me a chance to make it up to you?” Jeremy’s voice trembled.“Mr. Fisher, I thought I’d made myself perfectly clear,” she said, her tone calm and cold. “It’s over between us. Please stop doing these meaningless things.”“It’s not over! It’s never been over for me!” Jeremy burst out desperately, bloodshot eyes staring at her. “Hailey, I know you resent me, but that’s all my fault. I admit I was a jerk, blinded by greed, but I never meant to truly leave you! Our divorce was fake.

Jeremy paused for a moment before he continued, “I hurt Hailey for the company’s IPO. I betrayed her trust and the love she had for me. I realize my mistakes now, and I’m asking for a chance to make things right with her. I know you were behind the issues with the company audit… but I don’t blame you. I deserve this lesson.”His voice cracked as he choked back tears. “I beg you… Give me one more chance, not for the company but for me. Give me a chance to correct my mistakes and be a better person. Please… give Hailey and me a chance. I know I don’t deserve it, but I can’t live without her.”The office fell silent, save for Jeremy’s rapid, ragged breaths.Iris stared at him, her gaze sharp and unyielding, like a knife trying to cut through his soul to see how much of his repentance was genuine. After a long pause, she finally spoke, her tone calm but carrying an unshakable weight. “Jeremy, you’ve had opportunities. When you decided to secretly marry and then divorce Hailey to gain f

“Whitney, do you really feel that way?”Whitney looked at him, her expression sharp with disbelief and scorn. “Isn’t it only natural that we gave up on you? Do you really think they should keep a rotten, stinking pawn like you around, waiting to drag them down and become the laughingstock of the entire circle?”Each word cut straight to the heart. Every sentence was like a hammer, shattering the last remnants of Jeremy’s pride. He had plotted carefully, step by step, calculating benefits, weighing gains and losses. Yet, only now did he truly understand how absurdly wrong he had been.He had approached Whitney with ulterior motives, and she had seen him as a promising prospect. However, when the prospect lost its value, Whitney chose to liquidate completely, kicking him out of the game without hesitation. How could Jeremy compare to the true wealthy families? In the battle between old money and new money, he had lost, utterly and irreparably. Only now did he realize that this all

He couldn’t believe it—he refused to accept that the Addams family could be so ruthless and so quick to turn their backs. Even more so, he certainly could not believe Whitney would choose to walk away from him in his moment of need when she had loved him so deeply and understood him so well! Now that he had nothing, he could not afford to lose another woman who loved him. He had to get answers! Hence, after gathering himself, he drove straight to the Addams family’s mansion on the hill, the pinnacle of wealth and status in the city. The closer he got, the heavier his heart felt. The mansion gleamed with lights, looking from afar like a sparkling crystal palace. Ornate iron gates stood at the entrance, luxury cars lined up outside, and uniformed attendants respectfully guided the guests inside. It was obvious that a grand party was underway.Jeremy pulled up, but the security guards stopped him.“Sir, please show your invitation.”“I’m Jeremy Fisher,” he said, giving his name. The

Just as he was about to leave the country, Jeremy was informed that, until the company went public, he was barred from traveling abroad. However, if he did not seek Iris and Hailey to explain the situation, there was no way the IPO could succeed in the company’s current state.Hailey had blocked all contact with him, so he could not reach her at all. Eventually, he managed, with great effort, to get Iris’s private contact information, and he called her repeatedly. Alas, nobody answered. He even sent text messages and emails, but there was no reply. Despair crept in, slowly gnawing at him. He could not just sit there and do nothing, watching the company’s IPO plan crumble before his eyes. The financial officer reminded him, “Mr. Fisher, we need to be proactive. Since the last audit failed, we should approach another firm and try to complete a second audit before the IPO.”Jeremy was jolted awake. Realizing the urgency, he mobilized every contact he had to find a qualified auditing
