"Enough. Stop talking." I swallowed hard against the nausea, my voice icy. "Take me to the hospital."

When I didn't respond, Zach visibly relaxed, but his voice quickly turned firm again. "I'll take you to the hospital, but Lily's only two exits away. I'll drop her off first. It'll only take a few extra minutes. You've always been understanding, Eva. Don't make a big deal out of this."

I leaned back in the passenger seat and closed my eyes.

Zach took my silence as agreement.

He started the car and, with practiced ease, took a detour to drop Lily off.

He opened the door for her, helped her out, and picked up her bag. He thought of everything.

Meanwhile, I sat alone in the passenger seat, the blood on my forehead slowly crusting over.

Lily stood by the car door with a hand pressed to her chest. "Zach, Eva's not going to be mad at me, is she? Maybe you should hurry up and take her to the hospital..."

Zach ruffled her hair and reassured her, "Of course not. Eva's tough. She doesn't make a fuss over little things like this. Don't worry about it."

Five minutes later, Zach finally got back in the car and drove me to the hospital downtown.

Check-in. Insurance paperwork. Wound care.

The doctor cleaned the cut on my forehead, his expression grim. "The cut itself isn't too bad—just two stitches. But you took a hard hit, and you have a mild concussion. I'd like to keep you overnight for observation to make sure there's no bleeding in the brain."

I nodded. "Okay. I'll stay."

Zach stood to one side, watching the doctor fill out the paperwork. He began to frown.

His phone kept buzzing in his pocket. After checking it several times, he turned to me, irritation creeping into his voice. "Eva, the doctor said the cut isn't serious, and the concussion should clear up in a couple of days. Something urgent came up at work. I need to take care of it." He pulled a few bills from his wallet and pressed them into my hand. "You can handle the admission yourself. I'll come back when I'm done." Then he turned and walked away.

I watched him disappear down the hall, the bills still clutched in my hand, and gave a bitter smile.

The boy who had once shielded me belonged to the past.

...

The hospital room was quiet except for the steady drip of my IV.

I lay in bed. My forehead throbbed, but my mind was clearer than it had been in five years.

I took out my phone and made a call.

A warm, steady voice came through the phone. "Evie? Isn't today your fifth anniversary with that boy? Why are you calling me at this hour?"

"Dad." I took a deep breath. "Cancel the six-million-dollar investment I asked you to arrange for Zach's company."

On the other end of the line, my father, Henry Lowell, chairman of the Lowell Group, fell silent for a few seconds.

After decades at the top of the business world, he knew better than to ask questions that didn't need answers.

"Finally figured it out?" There was no surprise in his voice, only quiet understanding and concern.

"I figured it out." I stared at the harsh white ceiling light. "He's not worth hiding who I am just to play pretend and build a life from scratch with him."

"All right. I'll have the legal team shut down the investment review immediately. He won't see a cent." My father agreed without hesitation, then added gently, "Now that that's settled, come work for the family business. Our overseas branch has an asset restructuring project coming up. Spend a year abroad, learn the ropes, and when you come back, you'll take over from me."

"All right. I'll leave it to you."

Golden sunlight flooded the airport terminal the day I returned from studying abroad.A year had gone by in the blink of an eye.I gently touched my temple. The spot that had been cut when I hit the windshield was completely smooth now, without a trace of a scar.As soon as I stepped through the arrivals gate, the understated car my family had sent was waiting for me.When I reached the top floor of the Lowell Group headquarters, I pushed open the door to the chairman's office. Dad smiled and slid two signed documents across the desk to me: a share transfer agreement and a handover agreement. "Evie, you've handled several cross-border acquisitions flawlessly this past year. You're even more capable than I expected." His eyes shone with pride and quiet satisfaction. "Now that you've gotten the hang of things, I'm handing the whole business over to you. Your mom and I have already booked tickets for a cruise around the world. We leave next week to enjoy ourselves!"I couldn't help laughi

When Zach walked out of Professor Lane's study, he looked completely defeated. He stumbled back to the office. What awaited him was a company in shambles, with everyone jumping ship. The office was in chaos. Several employees were packing up their things. At the most prominent desk in the room, Lily was packing her belongings into a cardboard box.She had thrown the matching heart mug into the trash. Ugly cracks ran along its rim.Zach rushed over, his eyes red, and grabbed her wrist. "Lily! What are you doing?"Lily winced at his grip and yanked her hand away. All the sweetness and admiration she'd once shown him were gone, replaced by cold indifference. "Zach, you're hurting me! What do you think I'm doing? My internship's over, and I need to go back to school and graduate. Of course I'm leaving.""Back to school?" Zach gestured at the mess on the floor, his voice shaking. "The company's out of money. This is the hardest time we've ever had. Didn't you say you'd always be here with m

During the first week after Eva left, everything at Zach's company began to fall apart.Without Eva holding everything together, the company's risk management and business operations descended into chaos.Several major clients Eva had personally managed suspended their partnerships, saying the proposals "didn't meet expectations." Suppliers flooded the accounting department with calls demanding payment. With next month's payroll and office rent due soon, Zach could barely breathe. But Zach was still holding on for one reason.Today, he would finally learn whether the multimillion-dollar financing plan he'd spent nearly six months preparing had been approved. The offer had come from Crestview Ventures, the biggest investment firm in the city.If the six-million-dollar investment came through, the company wouldn't just survive. Zach sat in the high-backed leather chair in the CEO's office with a few funding proposals spread out in front of him. This was the most important investment deal since the company was founded. If he secured the multimillion-dollar investment, the company would immediately move into the industry's top tier. But he'd been distracted all morning. His gaze kept drifting to the silent phone on the corner of his desk.It had been two whole days.Normally, whenever Eva got angry, she calmed down on her own within two days.No matter how bad the fight was, she always sent him a short text by the second night or the third morning."You have a sensitive stomach, so don't skip breakfast." Or, "The file is in the second drawer on the left. Make sure you grab the right one."In Zach's mind, Eva could never leave him.Five years earlier, he'd stepped in front of an out-of-control e-bike to save her without a second thought. From that moment on, Eva had seen him as someone she could depend on.Besid

No footsteps followed me.He had always cared deeply about appearances, and he'd long since grown used to my patience and understanding. He probably thought this would end like every other argument: I'd go cool off somewhere, then come back once I'd gotten over it.12:30 p.m. The café downstairs from his office.I sat in a corner by the window. The only things in front of me were a glass of water and the few personal belongings I'd just packed up from the office.Ding.The wind chime above the café door rang.Zach pushed through the door with a bouquet of red roses in one hand and a gift box from a luxury brand in the other. He walked over, set the flowers and gift box on the table, and took the seat across from me with a placating smile. "Still mad?" He unbuttoned his suit jacket and spoke in a gentler tone. "I know I was a little harsh this morning, but everyone was there. You told me to throw away Lily's mug in front of the whole office. You made me look bad. I ran out and bought yo

The day I was discharged, I took a cab straight to Zach's company. In five years, the company had grown from a three-person startup into a business that took up half a floor of an office tower.I'd helped build every part of it.I was there for one reason only: to collect my personal belongings. When I pushed open the company's glass door, the receptionist saw me and immediately grew flustered. She could barely say my name.I ignored her and walked straight into the main office.A second earlier, the office had been filled with the clatter of keyboards. The moment I stepped inside, everything went silent, as if someone had hit pause.Everyone turned to stare, some with pity, others hungry for gossip.I quickly understood why they were reacting that way.My old desk was just to the left of the CEO's office door, with the best light and the best view. Now Lily was sitting there.Dressed in a demure pink dress, she sat in my ergonomic chair, giggling at something on her screen. My books a
