Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
Joey didn't walk into the hotel as the little girl in her arms was attracted by the two potted plants by the entrance. Joey held the little girl patiently with a gentle smile on her face.

I stared at her in silence, the wind carrying away the tears on my face.

I suddenly remembered the first time I saw Joey.

She was out under the blazing sun, wearing a heavy mascot costume. She sat in a corner of the mall, her hair soaked with sweat, gulping down bottle after bottle of water. Although she was exhausted, the light in her eyes shone like stars.

I was captivated by the starlight in that girl's eyes. I watched her put her headpiece back on, then continued interacting with passing customers.

As the mall was about to close, she suddenly walked up to me and gave me a lollipop.

I took it anyway, and instinctively peeled away the brightly colored wrapper.

The weather was hot, so the lollipop had melted a little, yet it still had the usual cheap taste as it hit my tongue. It was cloyingly sweet, yet strangely intoxicating.

I later learned that Joey was a university freshman, a poor student who had just left the mountains. Her father had died early, and she had a sick mother at home. The tuition fees and her mother's medical bills had all landed on Joey's frail shoulders.

Nonetheless, she always had a smile on her face and never complained about the unfairness of the world. She quietly accepted society's prejudices and injustices.

I gradually started to have feelings for her. I would visit her part-time workplace and act as if I were also a hardworking student.

However, I had grown up without worry and lived a life of comfort, so I naturally couldn't get used to this type of work.

When I accidentally broke a plate, Joey looked at me with worry. At first, I thought she was afraid of being dragged down by my mistake since we were on the same team. Surprisingly, she quietly cleaned up the mess and even paid the fine for me.

Joey even comforted me and said, "It's alright. Just be careful next time."

Her clean, gentle smile touched a soft spot in my heart.

I never told her that I was the sole heir of the Smiths. I was scared that she would treat me like everyone else, flattering me because of my background and wealth.

As we spent more time together day after day, I found myself caring for her even more. Until one day, I realized that just hearing the name "Joey Taylor" would bring an inexplicable sweetness to my heart. I knew that I had fallen for this pure, friendly girl.

However, I saw her hugging a boy in a plain white shirt and sharing a small cake when I arrived at her dormitory one day. It was only then that I learned that she had a childhood friend.

He was her first love, the one she liked. They had promised they would start dating after graduation, once they could support themselves.

Seeing the happiness and contentment on Joey's face, I forced a bitter smile, quietly left, and quit my part-time job.

I thought our connection had ended there. Yet, when I passed by a hospital one day, I heard Joey's heart-wrenching cries.

Besides… I was once a beggar, and my legs are useless. How could I ever be worthy of her?Seeing me falter, Marcus smirked triumphantly. "Give up on her. I'll take good care of them. I won't hurt them."I remembered what I had once told Joey. By now, she must be wary of Marcus. However, I wasn't sure about things… I stared at Marcus intently. A man like him should die with me. Then, Joey would have no weaknesses or threats left in this world.I spoke in a hoarse voice, "What do you want me to do?""What do you mean?! I won't let you leave me again!" Joey's voice suddenly sounded from the entrance, and her face was full of panic. She even brought a few policemen with her.She ran over to my side, looking at me with worry. Only when she saw I wasn't hurt did she finally sigh in relief. Marcus put on a fake smile. "Joey, what are you doing here? I was merely chatting with Henry!" Daniel's words hit me like a lightning bolt.I had intended to return to where I was staying, but Daniel took me to a five-star hotel. "Henry, sometimes I'm really jealous of you."I looked at him in puzzlement. Marcus continued, "How were you able to seize Joey's heart back then, even though it was by force?"After all these years, no matter how hard I tried, her heart has always been with you."Why don't you just die?!"Marcus's words were like a knife, stabbing straight into my heart. The pain was unbearable. It turned out that, without my knowing, Joey had been deeply attached to me all along.Marcus told me that Joey's company had been listed and received government support, so it would soon expand overseas. He also

Joey even went to my nemesis and begged him to tell her my whereabouts. My nemesis asked her to deliver some alcohol to a bar, where she was harassed by some customers and almost got violated. When she finally saw me getting onto a train, she let out a sigh of relief. However, she also cried the entire night. No matter how much she begged, the police didn't reveal my whereabouts. I had used my last bit of connections to keep my whereabouts completely hidden. From then on, Joey stopped searching blindly for me and threw herself into making money. She used the money she got from my account and from selling the jewelry she got from my family to reclaim my company. She wished she could turn the 24 hours a day into 48 hours. Joey took out her phone and made a call. Soon, my previous secretary, Daniel, appeared before me. The moment he saw me, a hint of sadness flashed in his eyes. He carefully walked around me and stood before Joy. Joey pointed at me and said, "Take him downstairs first. Get him a change of clothes, and then call a doctor to check his legs."Hearing her words, Daniel's eyes lit up with joy. On the other hand, Marcus was in disbelief. "Joey?"Joey didn't look at anyone, and her face was expressionless. "I'm soft-hearted. I can't stand seeing an innocent person being bullied."You all don't need to be angry for my sake. I chose to be with Henry back then. It was a relationship of mutual benefit."Seeing Marcus looking upset, Joey finally sighed. "Forget it… It's all in the past. There are still matters at the branch office. I'll be leaving now."After Joey left, Marcus cast a cold glance at me before leaving with the group of people.Once everyone was gone, tears welled up in Dan

If Marcus were a good man, then Joey wouldn't be in much danger. On the contrary, if he were a viper, I'd be worried for Joey if she had someone like that around her. Either way, I couldn't do anything, nor did I have the power to do anything. All I could do was warn her. Joey was a capable person, so she'd definitely be able to figure it out.Joey was about to say something when the private room's door opened. Marcus entered with a bouquet of roses in his hands, accompanied by a group of people. He had a tender gaze as he said to Joey, "Joey, I've waited four years for you, so isn't it about time you made it official?"Their group of ninety filled the room and surrounded Joey and Marcus. Their chatter broke the tense atmosphere, and the entire room suddenly felt light and lively."Superstar Marcus, you still haven't proposed to Ms. Joey? That's your fault. Someone as outstanding as her should have been claimed long ago!"Marcus smiled in joy. "I've been busy with my career,

Hearing my words, Joey went pale. She grabbed my hand urgently. "Henry… I didn't!"I looked at her with a deep gaze and remained silent. After the company collapsed, before my secretary, Daniel, resigned, he came to see me. His usually calm face was full of regret, and when he saw me, he apologized, "I'm sorry, Mr. Henry. I can't work for you any longer." I didn't get angry. If anyone had to apologize, it should've been me.After all, Daniel had a family to support. He had just gotten married, and his wife was pregnant. I had caused him to lose his job. Fortunately, I used the last of my connections to secure a path for him. Before leaving, Daniel gave me a file. Inside, it showed that Joey and Marcus had once entered my study. The next day, the company's secrets were leaked.I held that file quietly, saying nothing. That was until my nemesis had broken my legs, and I crawled to Joey's place. I saw her and Marcus gazing at each other tenderly, and I realized I couldn't be sure o
