Chapter 2

Penulis: Perfect Timing
As soon as the post was published, it went viral. It was the end of the year, so the hot topic was annual salary raises at the moment. The internet discussed extensively about Ingrid's post.

The next morning, Dennis Brown, the PR manager, knocked on my office door with his phone in hand the moment I came in to work.

I skimmed the post and scrolled through the comments below.

Uninformed and clueless commentators had taken over the comments section. The number of comments kept climbing in real time.

"How do they still have the nerve to make an announcement when they're only giving a 20-dollar raise? Do they expect their employees to get down on their knees and thank them?"

"Look how badly these workers are being exploited. Is it really that hard to live a decent life?"

"This is an innocent college graduate getting her first harsh life lesson from the capitalists. Poor girl."

"Who is the boss of this company? Let's expose them. There are only so many business owners. There are way more workers like us out there!"

I smiled bitterly while pinching the bridge of my nose in distress. I hadn't expected that the apology email I sent out of good conscience would become the trigger for their online outrage.

Dennis was just about to speak when Ingrid and Stuart pushed the door open without knocking and walked straight in.

Stuart looked very sincere, as if he was speaking from the bottom of his heart.

"Ms. Hailey, things are blowing up online. The company's reputation is taking a serious hit. Honestly, you should have consulted us old employees before making such a decision. Look how things have escalated. But it's okay. At times like this, we elders have to step up and do our part."

As he spoke, he nudged Ingrid, who was standing beside him. "Ingrid is one of the top recruits from this year's hires. She was even head of the publicity department in college. She knows how to handle public opinion."

Ingrid stood with her hands in her pockets, her eyes full of arrogant confidence. "Ms. Hailey, a raise in salary is recognition for everyone's hard work over the past year. As you can see, your approach has only sparked widespread criticism.

"Right now, the public sentiment is clear. Everyone thinks you've crossed a line this time. But worry not! As long as you listen to the voice of the people and increase the raise, I'm confident I can turn public opinion around to some extent."

After Ingrid finished speaking, she stared at me intently.

I shook my head, tapping my fingers lightly on the desk. "The company's policies won't change overnight. If there are objections, we can hold an assembly and put it to a vote."

Right at that moment, Dennis, who had been looking down at his phone, suddenly interjected, "Ms. Sarandon, this post has reached number one on the trending list. It has over 300,000 comments!

"The people online have already dug up our company's name. A reporter from Jerton Daily just contacted me. They want to conduct an exclusive interview with you."

Ingrid, who was standing to the side, grew even more brazen. "You seem to be about my age, Ms. Hailey. A word of advice—it's not too late to fix things before it's beyond repair. This company is your parents' life's work. Don't let your ridiculous pride ruin what everyone has worked so hard to build."

I ignored her provocation and veiled threats.

I patiently explained, "First, the 20-dollar raise is only temporary. Once the company gets through this difficult period, we won't mistreat anyone. Second, this year's year-end bonuses will be paid as usual so that everyone can have a happy new year. Do you have any other concerns, Mr. Hunt?"

Under Ingrid's and my scrutinizing gazes, Stuart tried to smooth things over awkwardly.

"Ms. Hailey, you may not be short on money, but you have to think about ordinary folks like us. My son is getting married this year. There are lots of expenses to be paid."

Indeed, Stuart's son was in his 20s now. But he seemed to have forgotten that 20 years ago, it was my parents who privately paid 300 thousand dollars for his son's leukemia treatment when he had just joined the factory.

I had no desire to continue arguing with pretentious ingrates. Not only was it meaningless, but it would only strengthen my resolve for what I planned to do next.

I said firmly, "I'm the one who makes the final decisions in this company. If there's nothing else, please leave. Mr. Hunt, I am now the one in charge. Please don't call me Ms. Hailey. It's Ms. Sarandon for you."

Ungrateful people who betrayed my family's trust were no longer worthy of my respect.

  • When a Stingy Raise Turns into a Corporate Funeral   Chapter 9

At the airport cafe, Michael sat across from me, relaxed and completely at ease. Still, I didn't dare let my guard down.In just a few short days, I had already gotten a taste of his methods.I had heard about the verdict made in Ingrid's case. She was required to compensate the company seven million dollars for reputational damages. Not only that, her social media accounts had been permanently banned, and her post was now flooded with comments cursing her.She didn't get to have any peace back at home either. Former colleagues constantly harassed her. They would splash paint on the walls and throw eggs at her door.Every time she went out, people pointed at her and gossiped about her. Once, she was even struck from behind with a blunt object. At the moment, she was still lying in the hospital.Stuart had it even worse. Thanks to the efforts of Lumina International's professional legal team, he was ordered by the court to return 45 million dollars in illegal gains and sentenced to

Michael left, but he left behind his legal, HR, and PR experts from Lumina International, who officially began working on-site.The employees in my company felt like they were walking on a tightrope every day. The previously relaxed and pleasant work atmosphere was gone. It was replaced by constant fear and tension. Everyone felt like a suspect awaiting judgment, and they all felt unsure of what lay ahead.Meanwhile, the experts worked out of a temporary office.Every day, people were called in one after another for interviews. Among them were even employees who had been with my father since the company's founding. Each person came out of the office with a vivid expression on their face. Some looked dejected, while others were restless and anxious.I knew that Michael had begun his trimming act. He didn't care about loyalty or sentiment. In his eyes, the only thing that mattered was whether one could create value for the company. This was what a true businessman was like. It was

I composed myself and strode forward to greet Michael. "Welcome to our humble company, Mr. Quinlan. I apologize for not receiving you properly. I was handling some internal matters. Please forgive the spectacle."Michael seemed amused as he responded, "Internal matters? Your company's family culture does make me envious, but what just happened seems to go beyond that."He then leaned closer and lowered his voice. "You treat them like family, but it doesn't seem like they appreciate it."I casually stepped back to put some distance between us while adopting a distant, impersonal expression. "You're overthinking it, Mr. Quinlan. I will handle everything impartially, and it won't affect your acquisition of my company."Michael didn't seem to mind. He straightened up and said, "Then you don't mind if I stay and watch the show? Don't worry. I won't interfere."I gestured for him to do as he pleased and paid no further attention to his group.Ignoring the probing looks from the emplo

Stuart and Ingrid's faces lit up just a moment ago. But now, they felt as if they had been dragged down to hell.Stuart's legs gave out. He collapsed onto the ground, and his pupils constricted violently with fear.It took a long while for him to snap out of his dazed state. The moment he did, he crawled over and grabbed my pant leg tightly. "Ms. Sarandon, this has nothing to do with me! It was all Ingrid. She was the one causing trouble the whole time! I couldn't talk her out of it no matter what!"I've worked for the company for so long. No one wishes for the company to do well more than I do! How could I possibly do anything to harm the company?"I glared daggers at the pathetic man kneeling at my feet and pulled my leg away in disgust.I spat, "While you didn't spread rumors online, you were fanning the flames and inciting unrest among the other employees. Mr. Hunt, you've been with the company for so many years. I don't think we've ever mistreated you in any way."How could

After the assembly, a cloud of gloom hung over the company. Most people were not in the mood to work. They just spent their days feeling anxious and uncertain about the future.I, on the other hand, felt as if a massive burden had been lifted off my shoulders. I hadn't been this relaxed in a long while.I submitted my enrollment application to the art faculty at the University of Owlridge. With my previous portfolio, I was very confident that they would accept me.But before I left, there was still one important matter to handle.I looked at the uneasy Ingrid in front of me and remained silent for a long time. She fidgeted with her fingers nervously and kept her head down, not daring to meet my eyes. Her attitude now was starkly different from the arrogance she had shown before.Over the past few days, I had people compile a list of all her violations of the company's code of conduct since she joined. There were records of every instance of her misconduct over the past year printe

Ingrid was the first to react. Her shrill voice cut through the silence. "Don't try to intimidate and manipulate us, Hailey!"She stood up and stared at me, desperate to confirm whether I was bluffing.I met her gaze calmly and said nothing. I just watched as she grew more and more flustered."No… S-She wouldn't. If she shuts the company down, how would she make money?" she muttered to herself. The people who had just gathered around her now offered no support at all. Uncertainty flickered across their faces as they weighed the truth of my words. But the atmosphere in the livestream comments was completely different from the scene on-site."They're being ungrateful. If they won't do work for you, I will!""I just looked up this boss and her parents. The whole family is basically living saints.""This company is known for its tremendous generosity back where I live. The fact it hasn't gone under yet is probably because of the owner's goodwill alone."Only then did Stuart sna
