The night air was thick with warmth and the sweet scent of grilled spices still lingering faintly around the patio. The soft jazz had faded into silence, replaced by the muted hum of crickets and distant city noise.

Xander held June gently as they swayed to the last bars of her favorite song. The way she leaned against him, head resting lightly on his shoulder, told him she was beginning to trust. Slowly. Carefully. Like a wounded bird unsure if this new hand would cradle or crush her.

He closed his eyes briefly, drawing strength.

Then, gently pulling back just enough to meet her eyes, he took her hand in his.

“Give me a chance to love you, Miss June,” he said, his voice low but full of earnest emotion. “I promise—I swear—I won’t take it for granted.”

June didn’t reply at first. Her breath caught in her throat as she looked up at him, into those brown eyes that had never once turned cold or calculating. Eyes that held no shadow of manipulation, no hint of dominance or power play—just

  • When love turns to ashes    I’m sorry june

The house was warm when Xander finally walked through the door, but the warmth didn’t reach him. The faint scent of rosemary and garlic drifted from the kitchen, curling through the hallways like a reminder that this was supposed to be home, a sanctuary. Not a battleground for his conscience. He slipped off his coat and loosened his tie, his mind still heavy with the conversation he’d had with his father with the memory of Margot’s watchful eyes, and with June’s trusting face lingering in his mind like a shadow he couldn’t shake. Every step deeper into the house made his chest feel tighter, as if the walls themselves could sense the weight of what he carried. He found her in the kitchen, her hair pulled back loosely, wearing one of his shirts over her leggings as she stirred a pot on the stove. The soft yellow light above her cast her in a glow that made the whole scene feel painfully domestic, almost too pure for the mess swirling inside him. She hummed softly off-key, but sweet as s

  • When love turns to ashes    I fooled him

The moment Xander’s car rolled past the iron gates and disappeared down the long, fog-lined road, Lionel Hawthorne remained seated at his desk, unmoving, his silver gaze fixed on the faint condensation his scotch glass had left on the polished wood. His office was silent save for the faint creak of the old fireplace, the soft ticking of the grandfather clock by the door. The quiet didn’t last. The study doors opened with a soft click, and Margot, Lionel’s personal assistant, stepped in. Tall, poised, and unshakably composed, she had worked by Xander father’s side for nearly twelve years, and if anyone besides Xander’s father understood how the Family empire functioned, it was her. Her heels made little sound against the Persian rug as she crossed the room, a sleek tablet in one hand, a folder of contracts in the other. She glanced briefly toward the closed leather folder that lay atop His desk—the one holding June Williams blindly signed documents. The quiet tension in the room told

  • When love turns to ashes    Regrets upon regrets

He gripped the handle of the car door, his jaw tight, his thoughts running circles in his mind. Every step he had taken to get here had been methodical, deliberate. Yet now, with the deal sealed and the documents locked in his father’s safe, something gnawed at him a sliver of hesitation that refused to be buried. If she found out now… if she learned everything before the baby was born… would she be able to carry the child safely? Would she leave, risk everything, and take their unborn child with her?He knew she would. He slammed the car door shut without getting in and turned on his heel, his polished shoes crunching against the gravel path as he marched back toward the mansion. The butler, startled, opened the heavy doors without question, his brow furrowed slightly as Xander strode through the halls with a sharp, purposeful pace. The study doors were still open, Lionel seated at the desk with his usual calm authority, flipping through another set of documents as though his son’s i

  • When love turns to ashes    He made his choice

The message from Garrick still glared on the phone screen as Xander stood in the dim study, the faint glow from the fireplace casting sharp lines across his face.“No delays, Xander. Tomorrow. Or the board will know everything you’ve been hiding.”His jaw tightened, and he stared at the words until the screen went black. There was no room for hesitation anymore. Garrick had ensured every possible escape was cut off. The trap was set, and he was just as bound to it as June.He turned back to the drawer, the faint metallic click as he opened it echoing in the silent room. Inside lay the slim leather folder—the one containing June’s signatures, her graceful handwriting sprawled across each page. Signatures she had offered freely, trusting his calm reassurances that these were “standard asset protections” and “joint ventures for their child’s future.” She hadn’t even read them closely; she hadn’t thought she needed to.He stared at the folder for a long time, his hand resting on its smoot

  • When love turns to ashes    A difficult choice

He glanced toward the study door again, toward the faint sound of June moving in the hallway. He pictured her hand on her stomach, the soft way she sometimes smiled now when she caught him watching her. A smile she never used to give him. A smile he hadn’t earned."If you finish it," the pragmatic voice whispered, quieter now, almost coaxing, "she’ll hate you, yes. She’ll leave. But you’ll have secured your future, your father’s empire, your freedom. You can survive losing her. You can’t survive being disowned and penniless when Garrick turns on you.""If you stop," the other voice urged, desperate, "you lose the empire, maybe everything your father promised you. But maybe… just maybe, you don’t lose June. Maybe you build something real, something that doesn’t reek of lies. She might hate you when she learns the truth, but at least she’ll know you tried to make it right."Xander gripped the edge of his desk, knuckles white. He felt torn clean in two, like two versions of himself were

  • When love turns to ashes    You need to make a choice

Xander stood in the study of their sprawling estate, the dim glow from the fireplace casting long shadows across the mahogany walls. The room was quiet too quiet but his mind was anything but. He had been pacing for almost half an hour, phone in hand, waiting for a call he already knew he didn’t want to take. When it finally came, the sharp buzz of his phone cut through the stillness like a blade. He didn’t even check the screen before answering.“Xander,” a cold, deliberate voice greeted him. It was the voice of his father’s lawyer, Garrick Steele—a man who had been by his father’s side through every shady deal, every hidden contract, every empire built on lies.Xander swallowed hard. “Garrick.”“Why haven’t you finished the final step?” Garrick’s tone was sharp, unyielding, the kind of voice that didn’t tolerate hesitation. “You’re wasting time. We’ve come too far to stop now.”Xander ran a hand through his hair, his eyes flicking toward the closed door to the study. Beyond it, down
