Just when Xander was planning to go see Valerie that evening, his phone rang. It was June. Her voice was frantic, trembling, and heavy with tears.

“Xander… it’s Valerie,” she choked out. “She… she had a crisis. We’re at the hospital.”

Xander froze. His heart dropped into his stomach. For a moment, he couldn’t breathe, his throat locked tight. Then, without even thinking, he grabbed his car keys and bolted out of the office. He didn’t bother turning off the lights, didn’t lock the door. He just drove, his trembling hands gripping the wheel as tears blurred his vision.

The hour-long drive felt like eternity. He kept replaying Valerie’s laughter in his head the way she had finally started to open up to him, the smile that had returned to her face in the last few weeks. He had promised her a future, promised to be there, and now… now he feared he would lose her just when they had finally found each other again.

When he arrived at the hospital, the first thing he saw was June. She was sitt

  • When love turns to ashes    I will give my heart

His heart was pounding against his ribs, and every breath he took was heavy with determination and fear. He had made up his mind — there was no turning back. If his daughter’s life could be saved, then his last month of existence would not be wasted. He would give her the very thing she needed to survive, even if it meant he wouldn’t live to see her grow into the beautiful woman she was destined to be.He wiped his face with his palms and drew in a deep breath before heading straight for Valerie’s doctor. The corridor of the hospital smelled of antiseptics, but to Xander, it was thick with fate. He knocked once on the door and stepped inside. The doctor, a middle-aged man with glasses perched at the tip of his nose, looked up from some charts.“Mr. Xander ?” he asked cautiously.“Yes,” Xander replied, his voice thick. “I’m Valerie’s father.”The doctor blinked, surprised. He stood up and stretched out his hand.“Valerie has spoken highly of you… she was excited that you came back into

  • When love turns to ashes    Last wish of a dying man

Xander sat in the corner of the hospital waiting room, his hands trembling as he replayed June’s words in his head. Valerie has a bad heart… transplant… I can’t lose my baby. The words sliced into him deeper than any knife could. He buried his face in his palms, tears sliding down uncontrollably. For the first time in his life, he felt completely powerless. After a long silence, he pulled out his phone with shaking fingers and dialed Dr. Lawrence. The doctor answered almost immediately, his calm voice greeting him, “Xander? Are you okay? You don’t sound fine.”Xander’s voice cracked as he asked the question that had been burning in his chest, “Doctor… tell me the truth… can I transfer my heart to Valerie?”There was a pause. Dr. Lawrence inhaled sharply. “Xander… are you saying what I think you’re saying?”“Yes!” Xander almost shouted, his voice breaking into a sob. “Don’t give me technicalities, Lawrence. Just answer me. Can I? Can I give her my heart?”Dr. Lawrence went quiet for a

  • When love turns to ashes    Letting go of the past

Xander sat quietly in his office, staring at the half-empty glass of water on his desk. The once lively space that echoed with laughter from Valerie’s visits now seemed unbearably silent. He leaned back in his chair, pressing his trembling hands against his face. The doctor’s words replayed in his head like a haunting record: “You have a month, Xander. I’m sorry.”A month. Just thirty short days. Thirty days to make peace, thirty days to put his affairs in order, thirty days to try and hold onto the happiness he had just discovered with his daughter. For hours he sat, frozen in thought, until finally he reached for his phone. His first call was to his lawyer, Mr. Anthony. His voice cracked as he spoke, “Anthony, I want to change my will immediately. Everything my houses, my shares, my savings, my investments I want it all transferred to my daughter, Valerie. She’s… she’s my only heir.”The lawyer hesitated, concerned about the urgency in Xander’s tone. “Are you sure you want to do thi

  • When love turns to ashes    You have one month to live

Xander strolled into Dr. Lawrence’s office that bright morning with a grin spread wide across his face. He had never felt lighter in years. His daughter was back in his life, June was beginning to smile again, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like a complete man. He had been making plans in his head family trips, birthdays, graduations, everything he had missed. But his heart leapt with hope knowing he still had time to make new memories.“Doctor, I’ve been feeling great lately,” he said cheerfully as he sat across the desk. “No more heavy drinking, no late nights. My daughter Valerie… she’s my strength now. I’m ready for my next appointment, I want to be sure I’m in good shape for all that’s ahead.”Dr. Lawrence gave a faint smile, though his eyes carried a weight Xander didn’t notice immediately. He flipped through the medical results slowly, then paused, pressing his lips together. His hands tightened slightly around the file before he set it down carefully.“Xander,”

  • When love turns to ashes    This is family

The days that followed unfolded like a careful, fragile bloom slow, deliberate, and impossibly bright. June watched them with a mix of astonishment and a small, tentative relief that felt almost guilty to admit. Xander did not storm into their lives with grand declarations; he arrived in the quiet, ordinary ways of someone who meant to stay. He fixed the squeaky gate, learned the best bus routes to Valerie’s school, and showed up at parent–teacher meetings with a notepad and a chastened, earnest smile. He met the neighbors, thanked Mrs. Haines for keeping an eye on the gate, and handed June receipts for groceries and medicines without theatrics simple, dependable acts that, day by day, began to rewrite his presence from intruder to participant. At first, the outings were small and cautious. A morning at the park Valerie’s favorite place felt like testing the air after a long, cold winter. Xander pushed himself in a steadier rhythm now; the wheelchair rolled more confidently beneath hi
