Chapter 2

Author: Heisen Steele
The staff, who had always been so polite and deferential to me, didn’t even budge. Instead, a flicker of disdain crossed his eyes.

“I’m sorry, but Jamie Smith is our top auctioneer. Whatever she says represents the stance of our boss.”

Beside him, Jamie wiped away her tears and let out a mocking laugh.

“Miss Green, running to a man for help every time something happens isn’t exactly the hallmark of a good woman, is it?”

I couldn’t hold back anymore. My patience snapped, and I slapped her hard across the face.

She let out a sharp scream and, to my shock, fell straight into Zac’s arms.

I was dumbfounded, staring at her dramatic reaction. I reached out to push her away, but Zac grabbed my wrist firmly.

“Ria, you hit her! Apologize immediately!” he said coldly.

I froze, staring at Zac in disbelief. “Honey, didn’t you hear her? She’s the one who slandered me—”

Before I could finish, Zac cut me off, his face cold.

“She works here. Why would she lie?

“Ria, tell me the truth. Who’s this ‘old man’ she mentioned? And if your family’s bankrupt, why didn’t you tell me?”

The sharpness in his tone, something I had never heard before, startled me. I quickly tried to explain.

“Those are just rumors! If my family were really bankrupt, would I bring you to such an expensive place to relax?

“And those so-called ‘old men’? They’re just my uncles and family friends. They’re into collectibles. Is that a crime?”

Zac’s expression finally softened after my explanation, but Jamie clung to him like she was glued in place. She stayed nestled against his chest, making no move to let go.

I frowned deeply, glaring at the two of them.

“Honey, do you know Miss Smith? Why have you never mentioned her before?”

At that, they suddenly sprang apart as if jolted by electricity.

Zac cleared his throat and quickly regained his usual calm demeanor.

“I was in a rush to get to a meeting and had a small run-in with her. I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, so I just let it slide,” he said lightly.

“Don’t overthink it, Ria,” he added gently, tightening his grip on my hand.

My earlier doubts eased as I let out a sigh of relief.

Zac was the son of our family’s chauffeur, following in his father’s footsteps. We grew up together as childhood sweethearts.

Even though my parents disapproved of him, I secretly married him anyway. He was my husband and I should not let baseless suspicions get to me.

I smiled at him, reassured, and reached out to take the crown.

“Let’s go home,” I said.

Zac smiled back, holding my hand as we turned to leave.

But in the next moment, Jamie grabbed his other hand.

I froze in shock as Jamie started to sob pitifully.

“Mr. Quinn, you’re such a good man. I can’t stand by and watch you be deceived by a gold digger like her.

“She brings a different man with her every time, and they’re clearly close. I only broke the rules today to repay your kindness. Here’s your card, Mr. Quinn. I just hope you’ll find someone who truly cherishes you.”

Her melodramatic performance drew a round of applause from Miss Zimmer, who was clearly enjoying the chaos.

“Ria, stop pretending already!” she jeered. “Even if the Green family isn’t bankrupt yet, it’s only a matter of time. Everyone knows your family’s assets are plummeting.

“The once-proud Miss Green reduced to selling herself. What a joke! Just give up on the crown and let me have it.”

Her disdainful words sparked an uproar of laughter from the crowd. The buzzing whispers and mocking comments made me tremble with anger.

Just then, Uncle Lincoln, who had always doted on me, peeked his head out from backstage.

After a good cry, I reclaimed my identity as the true heiress of the Green family. My parents were at the top of the business world. How could they possibly go bankrupt overnight? The layoffs were part of a restructuring, and the rumors of bankruptcy? Those were planted by my parents to help me out. As for why I went to such great lengths to finalize the divorce, it was because most of my parents’ assets had already been transferred to me. If I had gone through a regular divorce, my wealth would have been more than enough for Zac and Jamie to live luxuriously for several lifetimes. I wasn’t about to lose both my heart and my money. After pulling myself together, I decided to go out for a drive. But as soon as I left my villa, Zac was there to stop me.His face was still bruised, but as soon as I stopped the car, he rushed to my door and tried to yank it open. “Ria, get out of the car. Let’s talk!” he pleaded. “I was just mad at you at the time. I thought you’d betrayed

Hearing Zac’s threats, I clenched my fists in anger. My parents warned me not to marry a man like him, but I insisted. “I guess sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to finally grow up,” I thought to myself.Seeing me remain silent, Jamie smugly pulled out her phone, flipping through her gallery before shoving it in my face. “Look at this,” she said with a triumphant grin. “Proof of Zac’s and my true love.“You can’t keep Zac’s body, and you certainly can’t keep his heart.” In the photo, the two of them were tangled together on a hotel bed, clearly caught in the heat of passion.I glared at Zac, my anger boiling over. “The proof of your cheating is right here, Zac. Since you’re the one at fault, you’ll leave this marriage with nothing.”Zac looked me up and down, laughing like I had just told the most absurd joke.“Ria, turn around and look at those debt collectors behind you. Stop acting like you’re still some untouchable rich girl.“Of course, I’m leaving with nothin

I staggered to my feet, trying to leave, but a group of men blocked my way at the door. “You’re Ria Green, right? Your family owes a massive debt. Even after mortgaging all their assets, it’s still not enough. We have no choice but to come after you.” Hearing this, Jamie immediately turned to Zac with a triumphant look. “See, Zac? I wasn’t lying! She’s nothing but a shameless gold digger. Not only did she ruin her family, but now she’s trying to drag you down with her!” Panicking, I grabbed Zac as he tried to walk away. “Please, just give me a few more days!” I begged the men. “This is my husband and he’s very capable. We’re married, so the debt should be shared. You can’t just come after me alone!” Zac shook me off, but I clung tightly to his shirt hem. Left with no choice, he turned back to face the group with me. “I’m sorry, gentlemen, but Ria and I are in the process of getting a divorce,” Zac said calmly. “Whatever her family owes, you can take it up with her.

I let out a laugh. “Zac, we’re a tech company. What do you think a gavel-holding auctioneer like Jamie can possibly do here?” Jamie, standing nearby, quickly grew flustered and interjected, “I’m young and attractive. There’s nothing I can’t do.“Ria, just because you rely on wealthy older men, does that mean you have to question every woman’s intentions?”Her voice was loud enough to draw attention from everyone nearby. Noticing the growing audience, Jamie raised her voice even more.“Don’t think I don’t know, Ria. The Green family is already bankrupt. You’re barely holding it together, trying to keep the truth from leaking out.“And guess what? I have a friend who works at your family’s company. She spilled everything to me last night.“There’s no such thing as a secret that doesn’t get out. Just this morning, I saw an anonymous post from one of your company’s executives airing it all. Ria, if you had any sense, you’d leave Zac alone and stop dragging him down with you!”As

When I pushed open the door to the office, the sight of Zac and Jamie standing close together confirmed my suspicions. Well done, Zac. Of course, you drove my car here just to show off to Jamie. The moment Zac saw me, he quickly withdrew the hand he had draped around Jamie’s waist. “What are you doing here?” he blurted out. I glanced at Jamie, who was now shrinking behind Zac, and asked in return, “I should be the one asking. What is she doing here?” Before I even finished speaking, Jamie clutched Zac’s sleeve, her eyes brimming with tears. “Zac,” she whimpered, “isn’t this your company? What’s she doing here?” I let out a cold laugh. “I’m his wife. Why wouldn’t I be here?” “You’re nothing but a low-class woman! You don’t deserve to be Zac’s wife!”Her voice rang out sharply, loud enough to spark murmurs among the employees nearby.Zac immediately grabbed Jamie’s arm and scolded her in a low voice, “That’s enough! Stop talking nonsense.”I glanced at their in

A chill ran through me as I turned to look at Zac, who was also staring at his phone. His fingers moved swiftly across the screen, typing, while a growing smile spread across his face. He didn’t even notice me watching. Testing him, I reached out my hand toward him. Immediately, Zac turned off his phone screen and tucked it behind his back. After a few seconds of awkward silence, he gave me an apologetic smile. “Ria, are you thirsty? It’s my fault for being careless. I’ll go make you some fresh juice right now.” Without waiting for a response, he stood up quickly, grabbing his phone and slipping it into his pocket as he left the room. My heart sank completely. Zac took a long time to return, finally coming back with a glass of juice. He smiled at me warmly before pulling out his phone, flipping to a chat screen, and handing it to me. “Here, take a look, honey. The client my company has been pursuing finally agreed to work with us!” I waved my hand dismissively,
