Chapter 3

Author: Dayless Reverie
When Judith Calder arrived, Dylan sat at Simone's side, peeling grapes for her. Judith took one look at the scene and smiled with approval.

"Dylan had sense. He knew how to take care of people. Not like a certain someone, looking like death from the moment he walked through the door. What a way to start a marriage."

I stood at the foot of the stairs with Dad's death certificate clenched in my fist. When she said the word "death," my grip tightened without thinking.

Simone glanced at me, her eyes cold and indifferent. "Mom was here. Were you going to pour her some tea or just stand there? Did the Holts forget to teach you any manners?"

I walked over in silence and picked up the teapot. My wrist still shook from the 6-mile walk the night before, and every muscle in my body ached. The moment I began to pour, Dylan let out a sharp yelp and jerked back against Simone.

"Ow! That was scalding!"

The water had not touched him. Simone reacted instantly, shoved me away, and the scalding tea splashed across the back of my hand instead. The skin swelled red on contact.

"Spencer, did you do that on purpose?" She shielded Dylan, her eyes full of disappointment.

"Dylan wore one of your robes. One. You could not even handle that? You had to pull this kind of stunt in front of Mom?"

Judith let out a contemptuous snort and slammed her teacup down on the table. "So much for high-society breeding. All I saw was a petty, jealous man. Simone, why was someone like this even part of our family? Divorce him and make things official with Dylan."

Before, the word "divorce" would have sent me to my knees, begging for forgiveness. I had loved Simone past the point of having any self-respect left. Now, hearing it, all I felt was the faintest flicker of relief.

"All right."

I looked up at them, swallowing the pain throbbing across my hand. My voice came out flat, emptied of everything.

"Then let us get a divorce."

The air in the living room went still. The shock in Simone's eyes lasted only a second before it hardened into something more cutting. She let go of Dylan, stood, and closed the distance between us step by step until her finger jabbed hard into my chest.

"Divorce? With what, Spencer? Do not forget, your father's company still owed the bank 300,000,000 dollars. Without me, how were you going to fill that hole? Sell a kidney?

"Or would you rather watch your proud old man go to prison at his age?"

Before yesterday, those threats would have been enough to break me. Now all I felt was sorrow. She had found my weakest spot, the way she always did. She just did not know it was gone.

"Think whatever you wanted."

I pushed her hand away. There was no point in arguing. "I was tired. I was going upstairs."

Behind me, a teacup shattered against the wall. Simone's voice echoed through the villa, raw with fury.

"Spencer, get back here! Who said you could talk to me like that?"

Dylan's voice wove in, all sympathy on the surface and satisfaction underneath. "Simone, do not be upset. Spencer was probably just in a bad mood. It was all my fault, really.

"I should not have worn his robe. I will take it off right now and give it back. Even if I had to walk out of here with nothing on, I did not mind."

"Keep it on!" Simone ground out the words through clenched teeth. "I will show him exactly who was in charge in this house."

I closed the bedroom door and shut out the noise from downstairs. The blisters on the back of my hand had already risen, translucent and swollen. I found a needle, held it over a flame, and lanced them one by one without flinching.

The fluid drained out. It hurt, but it was nothing next to the thought of Dad lying in that cold drawer at the funeral home.

I tore through every drawer and shelf until I found the wedding ring. It was the one Simone had given me, with rare blue diamonds worth a fortune. She had told me, "Spencer, you were the only one for me. Everything good in this world should be yours."

Now, this ring was the only thing of value I had left.

The funeral would cost money. The burial plot would cost money. A proper urn would cost money.

Simone had frozen my supplementary card, and the Holt family accounts had been seized. I did not want Dad's send-off to be something pitiful. At the very least, he deserved to leave with his dignity intact.

I slipped the ring into my pocket, changed into black, and left the villa quietly through the back door.

I saw Simone again on an afternoon two years later.Clara and I fed pigeons in the square. She was five months pregnant, wearing a loose maternity dress, eating ice cream and laughing without a care. I crouched in front of her, tying her shoes."Slow down with that. You would upset your stomach."I looked up and pressed a quick kiss to her knuckles. That was when I felt someone watching me. I looked up and saw Simone standing by the fountain. Two years aged her considerably. Gray crept into her temples. She was thin, wearing an ordinary gray trench coat, a folded newspaper in her hand. She stood perfectly still, looking at me, at Clara's belly, at the way I held Clara close. The last light in her eyes went out.Her lips parted as if to call my name. When she saw me help Clara to her feet, wrap my arm around her waist, and press a kiss to her forehead, something in her seemed to collapse. She stumbled backward, nearly colliding with a tourist behind her.I looked at her calmly,

The moment the plane lifted off, I watched the city shrink beneath me and said goodbye in silence.I went to Valloria. It was home to the art academy I always admired, and to the Renaissance that Dad spent his whole life dreaming of seeing.I used what was left of my savings to rent a small apartment with a loft, picked up a brush again, and enrolled in an architectural design program. The days passed slowly and quietly. Nobody knew Spencer Holt. Nobody knew I was the discarded husband of a ruined family with a dead father. Here, I was just Wind.I met Clara Winslow in the academy library during my first winter. She was a woman of quiet warmth, a year ahead of me in the program. The day we met, I could not reach a book on the top shelf, and she brought over a stepladder for me."That copy of 'The Beauty of Light and Shadow' was hard to find. You were a Monet fan too?"Her voice was soft, and she carried a faint scent of orange blossom. Nothing like the aggressive trace of tobacc

After that night, I quit the convenience store and began processing my paperwork to leave the country. I wanted to start over somewhere with no Simone and no past. The day before my flight, a piece of news tore through the city's social circles.I was packing when my phone exploded with messages. A buddy sent me a news screenshot. "This was karma. What went around came around."The headline read, "Wealthy Woman's Kept Man Steals Cash and Flees, Beaten to Death in Violent Confrontation."The photo had been blurred out, but I recognized the body curled in a pool of blood immediately. It was Dylan. After Simone threw him out of the villa, he did not leave the city. He was too accustomed to spending freely to survive on anything less. It did not take him long to find his next mark. With that pitiful face of his, he latched onto a woman at a nightclub, a recently returned heiress named Jolene Marsh.Jolene was known for her wild lifestyle, her explosive temper, and a serious streak o

I looked at the farce playing out in front of me and felt nothing but exhaustion."Simone, you were pathetic." I shook my head."You thought getting rid of Dylan was going to turn back the clock? He was never the problem between us. You were. It was your selfishness, your arrogance, your cruelty."Dylan was just the knife you used to cut me. Now that you threw the knife away, did that change the fact that you were the one who held it?"Simone opened her mouth but could not find a single word.I took hold of my suitcase and looked around the house one last time. I lived here for three years. This place once held every fantasy I ever had about love. Now there was nothing left but wreckage."The divorce was already in litigation. Goodbye, Simone." I paused at the threshold."I hoped we never saw each other again, not in this life or any other."The front door opened slowly. Morning sunlight spilled inside, sharp and blinding. I walked into the light without looking back.Behind m

That night, Simone sat outside my bedroom door until morning. I heard her on the phone the entire time, her voice kept low but unable to hide the fury and regret bleeding through."Why did no one tell me?"Something this serious happened to the Holts and none of you thought to say anything? Were you all useless?"Find out who went to collect that debt. I would destroy every last one of them."It would have been funny if it were not so pathetic. While Dad was alive, she turned a blind eye. She even made things worse. Now that he was dead, she wanted to play the role of the grieving, righteous protector. What was the point? The next morning, I packed my things. There was not much to pack as very little in this house ever truly belonged to me. All I had were a few changes of clothes and Dad's urn.The designer watches and couture suits Simone bought me over the years, I left hanging in the closet. If I was going to make a clean break, I was going to make it complete. When I came d

Simone looked down at the paper by her feet, brow furrowed, as if the words on it were written in a language she did not understand. After a few seconds, she bent down and picked it up. The paper trembled in her hand."What was this?" Her voice sounded unsteady."Gordon Holt... cremation..."She read the words aloud, then snapped her head up to look at me, her eyes filled with disbelief."Spencer, you made up a story about your own father dying just to get out of a reception? Just because you did not want to deal with Dylan? Had you lost your mind? You thought this was something you could joke about?"She slapped the paper across my face."If you were going to forge something, at least make it convincing. I sent people to the company to collect just a few days ago and he was fine. How could he be dead all of a sudden?"Did you really think a fake certificate would make me go soft? That I would write off the Holt family's debt? Spencer, you disgusted me."The paper drifted to th
