Chapter 4

Author: Dayless Reverie
I took the ring to the largest pawnshop in the city. The owner turned the blue diamond over in his hands, his eyes widening.

"Mr. Holt, this was a rare piece. When Ms. Laurent won it at auction, it made headlines. Were you sure you wanted to sell?"

"Sell it." I did not hesitate. "Outright. No buyback."

The owner clicked his tongue and named his price. "Three million dollars. That was the best I could do."

The ring had originally been worth 20,000,000 dollars. I did not have time to haggle. The funeral home was still waiting for payment.

"Fine. Transfer it."

Just as I was about to sign, a slender but firm hand pressed down on the pawn ticket. A familiar perfume hit me, suffocating in its intensity.

"Spencer, were you that desperate for money?"

My whole body went rigid. I raised my head slowly, and Simone stood behind me. I had not heard her come in.

She wore a tailored couture suit. Behind her stood Dylan with his arms crossed, watching with amusement, along with a handful of the socialites she usually kept company with. They looked at me with open mockery.

"Well, well. Was that the Holt heir? Reduced to selling his wedding ring?"

"Simone, were you squeezing him so hard he could not even afford to eat?"

Simone ignored them. She stared straight at me, fury churning behind her eyes.

"I offered you the black card and you turned it down. Now you were in a pawnshop making a fool of yourself with your wedding ring? Was this what you wanted? The whole city talking about how Simone Laurent mistreated her husband?"

She snatched up the ring and ran her thumb across the diamonds, her voice dripping with scorn. "Three million? Spencer, seven years together, and that was all it was worth to you?"

I looked at her and felt nothing but the absurdity of it all. If she truly cared about those seven years, she would not have brought another man home on our wedding night. She would not have stood by and done nothing while Dad was hounded by creditors.

"The ring was mine. I could do what I wanted with it."

I reached for it. "Give it back."

Simone lifted her hand out of reach without effort. She looked at the desperation on my face and laughed. It was a cruel, ugly sound.

"So you wanted money? Fine."

She pulled out a checkbook, scrawled a number across it, tore the check free, and threw it in my face. "Here were five million."

The thin slip of paper grazed my cheek and fluttered to the floor.

"Kneel." She pointed at the check on the ground as if she were training a dog.

"Get on your knees and pick it up, and the money was yours. The ring stayed with me."

Dylan leaned in close to her and put on his best wide-eyed look. "Simone, this ring was gorgeous. I wanted one too."

Simone glanced at him with indulgent affection. "You liked it? It was yours."

She took the ring, the one that had supposedly promised us forever, and slid it onto Dylan's middle finger. It fit perfectly.

"Thanks, Simone!" Dylan held up his hand, admiring the way the diamonds caught the light, and shot me a look that was pure provocation.

"Spencer, since you did not want it, I hoped you did not mind me keeping it."

I watched all of this and felt a fist close around my heart and squeeze until I could not breathe. I did not cry. I bent forward, dropped to my knees under the contemptuous stares of every person in the room, and picked up the check.

As long as Dad could be put to rest, nothing else mattered. What did dignity count for? What did pride count for?

When she saw me actually pick it up, the smile vanished from Simone's face. Something darker and more volatile took its place. She had probably expected me to tear the check to pieces and run, the way I always used to. She had miscalculated.

"Thank you, Ms. Laurent."

I folded the check, tucked it into my pocket, and turned to leave.

"Stop."

Simone grabbed my wrist and yanked me back, her nails digging into my skin hard enough to leave marks.

"Spencer, when did you sink this low? You would give up your wedding ring for money? Did you even have a heart?"

I raised my head and looked straight into her furious eyes. "Simone, you were the one who gave the ring away."

I let out a quiet laugh, my eyes dry and burning. "As for my heart, it died a long time ago."

I saw Simone again on an afternoon two years later.Clara and I fed pigeons in the square. She was five months pregnant, wearing a loose maternity dress, eating ice cream and laughing without a care. I crouched in front of her, tying her shoes."Slow down with that. You would upset your stomach."I looked up and pressed a quick kiss to her knuckles. That was when I felt someone watching me. I looked up and saw Simone standing by the fountain. Two years aged her considerably. Gray crept into her temples. She was thin, wearing an ordinary gray trench coat, a folded newspaper in her hand. She stood perfectly still, looking at me, at Clara's belly, at the way I held Clara close. The last light in her eyes went out.Her lips parted as if to call my name. When she saw me help Clara to her feet, wrap my arm around her waist, and press a kiss to her forehead, something in her seemed to collapse. She stumbled backward, nearly colliding with a tourist behind her.I looked at her calmly,

The moment the plane lifted off, I watched the city shrink beneath me and said goodbye in silence.I went to Valloria. It was home to the art academy I always admired, and to the Renaissance that Dad spent his whole life dreaming of seeing.I used what was left of my savings to rent a small apartment with a loft, picked up a brush again, and enrolled in an architectural design program. The days passed slowly and quietly. Nobody knew Spencer Holt. Nobody knew I was the discarded husband of a ruined family with a dead father. Here, I was just Wind.I met Clara Winslow in the academy library during my first winter. She was a woman of quiet warmth, a year ahead of me in the program. The day we met, I could not reach a book on the top shelf, and she brought over a stepladder for me."That copy of 'The Beauty of Light and Shadow' was hard to find. You were a Monet fan too?"Her voice was soft, and she carried a faint scent of orange blossom. Nothing like the aggressive trace of tobacc

After that night, I quit the convenience store and began processing my paperwork to leave the country. I wanted to start over somewhere with no Simone and no past. The day before my flight, a piece of news tore through the city's social circles.I was packing when my phone exploded with messages. A buddy sent me a news screenshot. "This was karma. What went around came around."The headline read, "Wealthy Woman's Kept Man Steals Cash and Flees, Beaten to Death in Violent Confrontation."The photo had been blurred out, but I recognized the body curled in a pool of blood immediately. It was Dylan. After Simone threw him out of the villa, he did not leave the city. He was too accustomed to spending freely to survive on anything less. It did not take him long to find his next mark. With that pitiful face of his, he latched onto a woman at a nightclub, a recently returned heiress named Jolene Marsh.Jolene was known for her wild lifestyle, her explosive temper, and a serious streak o

I looked at the farce playing out in front of me and felt nothing but exhaustion."Simone, you were pathetic." I shook my head."You thought getting rid of Dylan was going to turn back the clock? He was never the problem between us. You were. It was your selfishness, your arrogance, your cruelty."Dylan was just the knife you used to cut me. Now that you threw the knife away, did that change the fact that you were the one who held it?"Simone opened her mouth but could not find a single word.I took hold of my suitcase and looked around the house one last time. I lived here for three years. This place once held every fantasy I ever had about love. Now there was nothing left but wreckage."The divorce was already in litigation. Goodbye, Simone." I paused at the threshold."I hoped we never saw each other again, not in this life or any other."The front door opened slowly. Morning sunlight spilled inside, sharp and blinding. I walked into the light without looking back.Behind m

That night, Simone sat outside my bedroom door until morning. I heard her on the phone the entire time, her voice kept low but unable to hide the fury and regret bleeding through."Why did no one tell me?"Something this serious happened to the Holts and none of you thought to say anything? Were you all useless?"Find out who went to collect that debt. I would destroy every last one of them."It would have been funny if it were not so pathetic. While Dad was alive, she turned a blind eye. She even made things worse. Now that he was dead, she wanted to play the role of the grieving, righteous protector. What was the point? The next morning, I packed my things. There was not much to pack as very little in this house ever truly belonged to me. All I had were a few changes of clothes and Dad's urn.The designer watches and couture suits Simone bought me over the years, I left hanging in the closet. If I was going to make a clean break, I was going to make it complete. When I came d

Simone looked down at the paper by her feet, brow furrowed, as if the words on it were written in a language she did not understand. After a few seconds, she bent down and picked it up. The paper trembled in her hand."What was this?" Her voice sounded unsteady."Gordon Holt... cremation..."She read the words aloud, then snapped her head up to look at me, her eyes filled with disbelief."Spencer, you made up a story about your own father dying just to get out of a reception? Just because you did not want to deal with Dylan? Had you lost your mind? You thought this was something you could joke about?"She slapped the paper across my face."If you were going to forge something, at least make it convincing. I sent people to the company to collect just a few days ago and he was fine. How could he be dead all of a sudden?"Did you really think a fake certificate would make me go soft? That I would write off the Holt family's debt? Spencer, you disgusted me."The paper drifted to th
