Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
"Claire! What's wrong? Why are you throwing up like this?"

Mom and Dad rushed forward in panic, their voices full of concern.

I stood where I was and tilted my head. "Oh my, Claire. You're vomiting like you're pregnant or something."

A heavy silence fell over us.

"Stop talking nonsense!" Claire shrieked, as if she'd been terribly wronged. "I don't even have a boyfriend. How could I possibly be pregnant? Just because you… you've done shameful things doesn't mean you can accuse me!"

Watching her tearful display, Mom and Dad couldn't bear to see her suffer.

Dad's eyes flashed with anger. "Amanda, how dare you spread such vicious rumors about your sister! You have no sense of decency!"

Mom looked deeply disappointed. "Amanda, you've gone too far! Claire has never been around men. How could she possibly be pregnant?"

I blinked, my expression innocent. "I was just making an offhand comment. But since Claire is throwing up like this, we should probably have a doctor take a look."

"No need!" Claire blurted before she could stop herself. She quickly covered her mouth and coughed lightly a couple of times, her eyes darting around in panic. "I just ate something bad. I'll be fine after some rest."

With that, she collapsed weakly against Mom.

Mom and Dad rushed to help her inside, fussing over her anxiously.

I watched their retreating figures thoughtfully, my mind working. Claire's reaction seemed off. It was like she already knew she was pregnant.

A powerful surge of curiosity sparked inside me. I walked straight into the villa and joined Mom and Dad around her bedside.

"Claire, I'm really worried about you, so I called a doctor. He'll be here any minute. If something's actually wrong, it's better to find out early. That way, Mom and Dad won't have to worry."

Hearing my thoughtful words, Mom and Dad both looked pleased.

Claire's face instantly turned pale. She buried herself in Mom's arms with a whimper. "Mom, I don't want to see a doctor."

Mom patted her back sympathetically. She was about to speak when a deep voice suddenly came from the doorway.

"That won't be necessary."

My brother, Ethan Hartley, walked in and looked me up and down. He made no effort to hide the disgust in his eyes.

"So you're Amanda? Let me make something clear. Even though we share blood, Claire is my only sister. Her affairs are none of your business."

He walked straight to Claire's bedside and gently wiped away her tears. "If Claire doesn't want to see a doctor, she doesn't have to. She has me to look after her."

Claire threw herself into Ethan's arms, sobbing. "I knew I could count on you!"

I watched the two of them, and something clicked in my mind. I spoke up innocently. "You and Claire have such a close relationship. Even though you're not blood-related, you're so affectionate with each other!"

The moment those words left my mouth, everyone's expressions changed.

Ethan jerked his hands away as if burned, his ears turning red, fury blazing in his eyes. "What the hell are you talking about!"

Claire sobbed quietly and looked at me with tears streaming down her face. "Amanda, how can you say that about Ethan and me? Are you trying to change the subject? Are you spreading rumors about me so Mom and Dad will stop asking about your child?"

Her lips trembled as she bit down on them, looking utterly disappointed. "Actually… When I found out what happened to you, I was going to ask Mom and Dad to help you get justice. I never thought you'd treat me like this."

Mom tensed immediately. "What happened? Amanda, who hurt you?"

I sat down with an amused expression. "I have no idea. Claire, who exactly hurt me?"

"Amanda, don't be afraid. It wasn't your fault." Tears of sympathy filled her eyes. "I found out that a few months ago, you were… dragged into an alley by seven thugs… And they did those horrible things to you."

I didn't answer his question. If I didn't remember, then there was nothing to forgive. Over the next few days, something seemed to click for Ethan, and he started desperately trying to make it up to me. I didn't stop him. I didn't say much either.Watching us interact, Mom and Dad seemed relieved. They smiled more often. Life continued peacefully like this until the day of the homecoming banquet.Mom and Dad stood with me at the center of the stage, proudly introducing me to the guests. "This is our biological daughter, Amanda Hartley."The guests turned their attention to me, unable to hold back their admiration."Didn't they say she grew up in the countryside? You'd never guess it. She's beautiful and so well-mannered.""She's so much better than that imposter they had before.""Well, of course. That girl was a fake! She has no class at all!"Surrounded by chatter, I picked up the microphone and prepared to introduce myself."Amanda Hartley, go to hell!"Suddenly, a knif

That night, Ethan didn't return until the early hours of the morning, completely wasted.Mom and Dad took one look at him and understood that Claire's baby wasn't his. They couldn't help but curse furiously."That shameless girl! We treated her so well, and this is how she repays us! All these years, she's been playing us for fools!""That ungrateful wretch. From now on, she has nothing to do with the Hartley family!"Ethan watched silently but didn't say another word. Mom took my hand and placed it in his. "Ethan, you need to treat your sister well from now on. Amanda is your real sister. She's suffered too much all these years."Ethan looked at me for a long moment before nodding. I felt nothing. I simply smiled calmly.I still remembered when I was five years old, Ethan had taken me out to play. He left me at the amusement park and ran off without me. The last thing I heard was him shouting at me in fury."Ever since you came along, Mom and Dad stopped caring about me! I do

"What!" Ethan roared in disbelief.Claire's face instantly went deathly pale. She instinctively protested. "That's impossible! You're lying. Ethan is the only man I've ever been with!"Dr. Langford looked uncomfortable and quickly explained, "I'm not lying. Yesterday I received word that Ms. Claire wasn't feeling well, so I rushed over to examine her."When I arrived, Ms. Amanda told me that Ms. Claire didn't want to see a doctor, so I drew some blood while she was sleeping to run tests. That's when I discovered she was pregnant."Then Ms. Amanda asked me to run a paternity test. The results showed that the child is definitely not related to you."As he finished speaking, murmurs broke out around the room."Give me a break. This woman's love life is a complete mess. I don't know what this guy was thinking, actually believing her!""And he kept saying she was innocent and kind. What a joke. Poor bastard!""If you ask me, she'll never figure out who the father is!"Hearing the c

"Pregnant? What pregnancy?" Ethan's face changed drastically, panic flickering in his eyes. "Claire, when did this happen? Why didn't you tell me?""I… I…" Claire stammered, unable to get a word out.Mom and Dad were so shocked that they could barely stand."Oh wow, so Claire really is pregnant!" I pretended to be surprised and covered my mouth, moving closer with a bright smile. "Why didn't you tell us about such wonderful news sooner? Though…"My gaze shifted to the thugs still pinned to the floor, and I tapped my head as if troubled. "Which one of them is the father?"The men burst into laughter, their expressions suggestive."Not me! I was careful!""Not me either! We always took turns!""Who says it has to be one of us? This little slut probably sleeps with tons of guys…""Shut up!" Claire's face went ashen. "I… I have nothing to do with you people, and I definitely wouldn't be carrying any of your children!"Her hand instinctively reached for Ethan's. Seeing the plea in

The moment I finished speaking, the room fell completely silent. Everyone's eyes locked onto the video. On the dimly lit, shaky footage on screen, the woman was unmistakably Claire."This—" Claire frantically closed the video, her fingers trembling, eyes wide with shock. "Impossible. How is this possible? The person in the video can't be me. I didn't…"She shook her head frantically, as if her world had just shattered. I silently thanked the rebound system as tears slid down my cheeks. "Claire, you accused me of spreading rumors, but you've been falsely accusing me this whole time." I then deliberately turned to Mom and Dad, who stood frozen in place, my voice breaking. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't been kidnapped all those years ago, maybe you wouldn't be so quick to believe the worst of me."The moment that video started playing, you didn't even look at the face before deciding it was me." I paused and covered my face with my hands, sobbing."Amanda, I—" Dad seemed to snap ou

Claire's crying echoed throughout the entire villa. I stretched lazily and strolled over to see what all the commotion was about. In Claire's room, seven half-naked men were being pinned to the floor by security guards. Her eyes were red and swollen, her body covered in marks, and she trembled as she curled up in the corner of the bed."Animals! How dare you touch my daughter!" Dad kicked over the nearest man, his eyes blazing with fury."Touch her? She threw herself at us!" The man turned to Claire with a lewd grin. "Come on, little vixen. Tell mommy and daddy what really happened. You invited us over last night. We know each other so well. Why are you playing innocent now?"He pulled out his phone and shoved the chat history in everyone's faces."Come over tonight and keep me company."I miss you all. I'll be waiting at home. It'll be more exciting here."Mom and Dad staggered back in shock. Ethan stared at the screen, disbelief flooding his eyes."It's fake! This is all fa
