Chapter 2

Author: Daphne
When I didn't back down, Vivian stopped tapping the armrest. Her glare turned vicious.

The girl beside her offered me an empty wineglass. She acted as if she were trying to smooth things over, but every word pressured me to give in. "Your sister's being nice enough to teach you some manners. It's for your own good. Pour her a drink and apologize. Don't ruin everyone's fun."

I pushed the glass away. "This is my welcome-home party," I said, calm but firm. "I'm the guest of honor. I'm not here to serve you wine."

Martin Cole, the club manager, hurried over when he heard the commotion. Lucy immediately showed him the plans Mom had given her. "Mrs. Hartley arranged for Nora to come early to try on her dress. Tonight is all about her."

Martin barely glanced at the document before pushing the tray of drinks toward me anyway. "You're family. Why make a fuss over a little disagreement between sisters? Listen to your sister. Don't give the guests something to laugh at."

"She's handing my gifts out to other people and taking my seat. And that's not embarrassing?" I stepped around the tray. All I wanted was to find Lucy and leave.

Before I'd finished speaking, Vivian stood, snatched a small frosted cake from the dessert table, and slammed it onto my head.

Cold, sweet frosting covered one eye. Crumbs slipped inside my collar, sticking to my neck and making my skin itch. I felt utterly humiliated.

Loud laughter erupted around me. Amber moved closer with her phone until the lens was almost touching my nose, openly filming every second of it.

"Don't hide. Let everyone get a good look at the new little sister they found."

I fought down the hurt and shame, grabbed a napkin from the table, and wiped desperately at my eyes. The more frantic I got, the harder it was to control my shaking fingers. I needed to get out. I could barely stand being there.

"Lucy. Get me out of here."

But Vivian strode over and clamped her fingers around my left wrist so hard I thought she might crush it.

"You can go. Just leave what you stole."

She seized the ring Mom had given me the night before and dragged it over my knuckle. Pain shot from my finger up my arm. I tried to pull back, but she ripped the tight ring off and held it in her palm.

"Mom gave me that last night. I didn't steal it." I looked straight at her. "Call her. You can ask her right now."

Vivian held the ring up for her friends, mocking me. "One day here and you're already helping yourself to Mom's valuables. After all those years whoring around, no wonder you have no class!"

"You have no right to call me that! You made all of this up!" I wasn't going to let her lies stand.

Vivian scoffed, released my wrist, and tossed the ring onto the floor.

I bent to pick it up. Just as my fingers touched the cold metal, she stamped down hard on the back of my hand.

Pain tore through me. I cried out and braced my right hand against the floor, desperately trying to pull away. Her foot ground into my left hand, pinning me in place.

"Let me go!" I cried. Lucy rushed to help me, frantic, but Martin held her back.

"It's just sisters playing around. Don't make a scene and upset Vivian." With Martin openly taking her side, I didn't stand a chance.

Amber kept filming and snapping pictures. I could hear the shutter clicking. The other girls watched coldly. Not one tried to stop it.

My vision dimmed with pain, and sweat soaked through the back of my shirt. As I looked up at Vivian, I remembered the pain-link system. My parents and brothers had to be feeling every bit of this right now.

But Vivian only grinned. She demanded I admit I'd stolen the ring and showed no sign of stopping.

Lucy finally broke free of Martin and rushed over again. Only then did Vivian reluctantly lift her foot. Before I could move, she bent down and snatched up the ring.

I gripped the edge of the table and slowly got to my feet. My left hand was swollen and red, a clear shoe print across it. My phone kept vibrating in my pocket. Mom was calling.

I struggled to raise the phone in my right hand. Before I could touch the screen, Vivian swung at it.

The phone hit the corner of the table and crashed to the floor. The screen still showed Mom's incoming call. It kept vibrating and ringing, but no one could answer.

I looked Vivian in the eye, struggling to keep my voice steady. "When I get hurt, my parents and brothers get the same injuries. They must know something's happened to me."

Amber paused, then laughed even harder. "What kind of ridiculous excuse is that? Do you think we're stupid?"

Vivian stared at my swollen hand. Instead of backing off, she gripped the ring tighter, looking vicious.

"Then let them hurt, too! I'd like to see anyone try to save you!"

She raised her hand and slapped me hard.

"You lying little bitch! You think you can scare me with Mom and Dad?"

"I've been with them for 17 years. This has been my home for 17 years! You're some bastard from God knows where! Why should you get to walk in and take everything from me?"

The blow snapped my head sideways. My right ear rang, drowning out everything else, and half my face burned. I gripped the table to stay upright. The pain kept building until I could barely stand.

Lucy immediately stepped in front of me and ordered Martin to call security. He only glanced nervously at the door, worried the guests would come over to watch. In a low voice, he urged us to let it go.

Then Martin's phone rang. His expression changed the instant he saw who was calling, and he answered with quiet deference. "Mr. Hartley."

The voice on the other end was cold with fury, loud enough for all of us to hear. "Who's hurting Nora? Stop them. Don't let anyone touch her again!"

The day before the party, I finally understood what Dad had meant by "the whole place is yours."The entire estate had been closed to outside guests. For a full week, every member of the hotel's staff had been preparing for my party. As we drove through the gates, trucks full of flowers kept arriving. White roses and delicate moth orchids lined the broad stone steps all the way to the main building.A glass-walled pavilion had gone up in the middle of the garden, where workers were raising the last crystal chandeliers into place. Light shimmered through every pane.Mom told me that once night fell and all the lights came on, people would be able to see the pavilion shining from across the lake.I looked up at it all, so overwhelmed I almost forgot to keep walking.Dad reached out to steady me. "You can look all you want tomorrow," he said fondly. "Let's go upstairs and try on your dress."An entire styling team was waiting in my private room upstairs. Three stunning couture gowns hung

Vivian came the following afternoon as arranged. Mom was in the living room, carefully adjusting the bandage on my hand. When the doorbell rang, she didn't jump up to greet Vivian the way she once would have."Hold still. I'm almost done."Mom smoothed down the tape and checked that the edges of the gauze wouldn't rub against my skin. Only then did she look up.Vivian walked into the living room with Paul behind her. Out of habit, she held out her coat the moment she stepped inside."Hang this up."The housekeeper beside her didn't take it. She simply looked toward the neatly arranged suitcases in the entryway."All your personal belongings have been packed."Vivian stopped short, her coat still held out.Beside the cases were her jewelry box and garment bags full of clothes. Even the stuffed toy she used to leave on the couch had been carefully packed in a paper bag.She stared at her belongings for a few seconds, then abruptly turned toward the stairs.Ethan stood at the bottom, bloc

The next day, Ethan helped me organize all the video evidence. We sent it to the team handling our public response, along with the photos from when Mom gave me the ring. The footage left no room for doubt. Every word I'd said, every moment of Vivian grinding her shoe into my hand. It was all there.People who'd spread the theft rumors quietly deleted their posts. Many apologized to me privately. Others tried to avoid consequences by going through mutual contacts to reach Dad and beg him to let it go.Dad's expression didn't change as he ended each call. Then he turned to me, his voice gentle but firm. "Just rest and get better. You don't need to worry about any of this."Two weeks later, our lawyer, Paul Mercer, told us Vivian had been released pending trial. She wanted to meet with us, hoping I'd sign a letter saying I forgave her and asking the judge to give her a lighter sentence.Mom frowned immediately. Her answer was firm. "Nora isn't seeing her."I set down my glass of water and

After four days under observation in the hospital, I was discharged and finally came home. My head and stomach injuries were stabilizing, and the chest tightness and trouble breathing from the pool incident were easing. But the cut on my right arm hadn't healed yet, and my left hand was still swollen. Lifting it hurt.Mom carefully changed my dressing. Leo brought two full plates of my favorite treats and set them on the table in front of me. Ethan reminded him to put them within easy reach so I wouldn't strain my arm.I'd just picked up a treat when a video from Lucy shattered the peace."Someone edited the videos from that day and posted them online. People have the whole story backward."I opened the video. It had been cut together to show only me refusing to serve drinks and pushing someone, followed by the humiliating shot of frosting all over my head.Every cruel thing Vivian had said and done to humiliate me was gone. Instead, her voice played over the footage, making her sound

I broke into another fit of violent coughing. All four of them swayed at once and doubled over, choking and gasping just as I was.Vivian stumbled backward in fright and knocked over a chair. She looked back and forth between me and our injured parents and brothers. Trembling, she tried to speak, but nothing came out."Nora!" Mom ran toward the pool, nearly sobbing with panic at the sight of me.I tried to answer, but couldn't stop coughing. My chest felt ready to burst. Leo moved to jump in after me, then nearly collapsed. Ethan caught him."Don't move!" Ethan told him firmly. He turned to Ben Davis, our driver, and the security guards. "Help the lifeguard get Nora out. We'll stay clear. Be careful with her."At last, Vivian panicked. She clutched Dad's arm and babbled excuses. "Dad, I didn't know this would happen! I didn't know you'd feel it, too! Tell them to stop filming. Get everyone else out of here!"Dad pried her hand off his arm. He looked at her coldly, without a trace of hi

I heard people running outside the passage. Gripping the poolside railing, I hauled myself up and used what strength I had left to call for help. Before anyone could reach me, Vivian came over and seized my collar. Her grip was so tight I thought she'd break my neck."Wash the blood off your face. Stop embarrassing everyone." She dragged me toward the pool. "Who'd want you in their family looking like that?""I'm not going! Let go!" I clung to the railing with my right hand and fought to stay away from the water. My left hand was useless, and the strain tore at the cut on my forearm, making it hurt even more.Amber checked her messages. One of the girls watching asked quietly, "Did you send it to the group already?"I heard their snide little laughs. They were all against me. I had no one. Amber lifted her phone again, determined to catch every second of my suffering. There was nowhere to go. I couldn't breathe. At last, I had to let go of the railing. Vivian shoved me hard, and I fell
