Chapter 4

Penulis: Shirley
Lily saw the blood at the corner of my mouth, and her expression softened for a second. At that moment, I saw a glimpse of the loving mom she used to be through her eyes.

However, the next second, Sofia started crying louder. Lily quickly looked away and turned to comfort her "beloved daughter". "How are you feeling, sweetheart? Should I call a doctor?"

I wiped the blood off with the back of my hand and slowly got up from the floor.

A rundown suitcase sat in the corner with the handful of clothes I owned. I had it ready for a while. For the past few days, I had been preparing to leave.

They stared at me in disbelief, then hit me with biting sarcasm.

Anthony's expression was stone-cold. "What is this? Do you think you're too big for the family now? Are you just going to leave?

"Everything we do is to discipline you for your own good, Claire. Why can't you see we only want what is best for you?"

Lily pressed me. "Do you think running away solves your problem? You never change, Claire. You always run away the second things get hard. I suppose Anthony is right. We've ended up with a daughter who is good for nothing."

After gently setting Sofia on the bed, Rocco turned to me. The look in his eyes was chilling and filled with contempt. "Where are you going?"

I replied, "I'm leaving the Falcone family's turf."

He raised his voice sharply. "Do you have any idea what you're saying, Claire? The second you step out of our territory, you're not one of us anymore. You'll also be the target for every enemy we have."

I was so used to being let down that it didn't even faze me. After hearing the same threat so many times, I stopped being scared of losing this "family" anymore. They never gave me that sense of being at home.

I dragged my suitcase to the door. "Great. I don't belong here anyway."

After all, I already had one foot in the grave.

Pulling my suitcase, I made my way to the door and didn't turn back.

Seeing me like that hit Rocco like a punch to the gut. He had a sinking feeling that something was off. Every harsh word he said felt like he was tearing his heart out, but his pride and rage wouldn't let him see straight.

He told himself that I was the cause of his pain. He blamed my weakness and incompetence for his suffering.

Yet, he still didn't understand what was happening to him, so he shattered a glass in frustration.

The sound of shattering glass erupted behind me. Shards scattered across the floor, glinting under the light.

Rocco stood by the window on the second floor, his eyes filled with rage. His voice quivered as he yelled, "Get back here, Claire!"

I halted and took one last look at the place I once called home. Moonlight washed over the villa's walls, making the place feel cold and empty.

I said firmly, "If I ever look back, I'll lose everything I love."

The night air hit me the second I walked out of the gate. It smelled like freedom, but it also carried a hint of something final.

Rocco watched from the window as I left. My parting words made him shudder.

He knew I was in bad shape. The fear of something happening to me in the freezing night gnawed at him.

He longed to tell me that he didn't mean to exile me from the family. He never wanted me gone.

Everything in him wanted to chase after me, but then Sofia turned and grinned sweetly at him. "Don't you see, Rocco? After hitting rock bottom, she'll come crawling back to you. She'll learn the hard way that she is nobody without the Falcone family's protection."

The words made Rocco's chest tighten with a hint of irritation he couldn't name.

He dropped his gaze without a word. No one noticed his clenched fists trembling, or the blood dripping from where his nails cut into his palms.

  • When the Last Rejection Turned Into a Plea   Chapter 12

Rocco's POVThree days had passed. Sofia was huddled in a corner of the dungeon, filthy and soaked through. As she crouched there, she finally thought of her trump card.As the Falcone family's Don, I lost my wife. And it affected the family's morale. It was at an all-time low.Sofia was the only woman tough enough for the job and skilled enough to have my back. She started acting frail in front of the guards. She remarked, "I know Rocco hates me now, but pass him the message, please. The Falcone family needs a tough woman to hold things together and boost morale."I'm the only one who can help Rocco. I'll spend the rest of my life making things right. Please give me another chance to serve the Falcone family."…However, when I showed up at Sofia's cell, there was only contempt in my eyes. Seeing right through her little game, I didn't waver and merely laughed at her. "You're still scheming, Sofia. Did you really think I wouldn't see right through it?"You're responsible for

Rocco's POVJust as I was holding Claire's body and sobbing, the front door of the villa was opened. Sofia came in cheerfully with the same smug smile on her face as always. She had no idea what had happened. She called out sweetly, heading right for my arms like she always would. "I'm back, Rocco. The meeting with the consiglieres today couldn't have gone better. I have talked them into backing me."By the way, I saw Claire the other day. She's been hanging out with those bums on the edge of our turf and hasn't shown up for the Falcone family's duties for days."Don't be too hard on Claire, Rocco. Maybe she's just going through a phase. Just teach her a small lesson and be done with—"Before she could even finish her sentence, I shot up and slapped her. She was caught completely off guard, and she slammed hard into the wall.Clutching her throbbing shoulder, she stared at me in complete shock. "What's wrong with you, Rocco?"My eyes burned with rage she had never seen before. "

The room was drowned in grief when Claire's phone began to ring.At first, Anthony thought it was a telemarketer. However, after a few seconds, he fumbled to put the call on speaker. "Hello, Ms. Moretti," the caller began. "We're following up about the burial plot you selected. Would you like to secure it with a 5% deposit? Ms. Moretti? Are you still there?"My heart skipped a beat when I heard "burial plot". "I wasn't hearing things. When Claire went to file for a divorce, she was already arranging her final resting place." My voice cracked as I explained. "She mentioned the burial plot to me, and I snapped at her for being morbid."Anthony and Lilly held onto each other to stop each other from collapsing. The devastating truth sank in. Claire had been telling the truth all along. She was on her last breath, yet we had turned our backs on every desperate attempt she made to reach out.Feeling heartbroken, Lily grabbed the phone and told the sales representative, "We'll take

Rocco's POVWithout a word, Rosa led us through the restaurant and opened the door to a room at the back. When we finally saw the body covered by a white sheet, Anthony, Lily, and I were stunned. Even the air grew heavy. My voice shook, as if weighed down by a dark premonition. "What is the meaning of this? Why did you bring us here? Is this some kind of joke?"I stormed forward and yanked the sheet off. The moment I saw that familiar face, my world came crashing down. It was Claire, my wife. She lay there, looking so calm, like she was just sleeping. She sported a faint smile, as if she was finally free from all the agony. Unfortunately, she would never wake up again. The thread holding me together seemed to have snapped, and a wave of agony washed over my entire being. The pain was a million times worse than any gunshot wound. It felt like someone had pushed a dagger straight into my heart. Even though I was the Don, I totally fell apart, and I could barely even stand.Lily

Rocco's POVSofia frantically rummaged through the room. The sound of bottles clattering filled the air.She fumbled to open every drawer and rip the lid off every box. She even checked under the vanity, beneath the bed, and the corners of her closet. She darted around like a frightened rabbit, her forehead slick with sweat. After searching for what felt like forever, she still couldn't find what she was looking for.My voice was sharp like daggers. "What are you looking for, Sofia?"She spun and saw me standing outside the door, making her jump. Her voice quivered. "I-I'm not feeling so good. I was searching for my allergy pills."I slowly held up a small white pill bottle I had found in her room before she got back. "You mean this?"Sofia instantly went pale with panic. She knew better than anyone that the bottle didn't contain allergy pills but a custom-made skin irritant she had used to fake her allergic reactions. All it would take was for the Falcone family's best doctor

  • When the Last Rejection Turned Into a Plea   Chapter 7

Rocco's POVBack at Falcone headquarters, I called a meeting with the capos to address the territory dispute with the rival family.Suddenly, my encrypted phone buzzed with an alert. It was an encrypted email from Claire.I impatiently tapped on it, but part of me was relieved that she had finally reached out. "What is she up to this time?"She finally caved in and wanted to make up. Yet, when the recording started playing, my face went as white as a sheet.Sofia's voice came through clear as day. "I started slipping a slow-acting poison into your supplements when you were 14. I was also the one who shoved you off the platform. You can't imagine how happy I was, watching you grow weaker day by day."The audio cut off abruptly, and the room fell into dead silence. The capos exchanged glances in shock, not knowing what to say.I couldn't shake the empty feeling inside, and I knew it was connected to what happened to Claire.I froze for a second before losing it.
