When the Office Doormat Finally Snapped
Penulis: Mr. Modest

Chapter 1

Penulis: Mr. Modest
"I can't cover your shift," Hubert Gray, my colleague, said. "I'm playing golf this afternoon. I don't have time."

With that, he turned his back on me.

"Hubert, please," I pleaded. "My grandma's dying. I need to get there right now…"

He clicked his tongue in annoyance, then raised his voice. "I'm not trying to be harsh, but what does your dying grandma have to do with you? If you've got time to bother other people, you might as well finish that proposal. Stop inconveniencing everyone!"

His voice rang through the office, silencing the chatter around us. One by one, my colleagues turned to stare.

I held his gaze for a few seconds.

"What? Am I wrong?" Hubert shouted, clearly uncomfortable under my stare. "Covering someone's shift is a favor, not an obligation. I simply don't want to swap shifts with you!"

I opened my phone and typed "shift" into our chat. More than 600 messages appeared.

"Jonas, I'm meeting some friends tomorrow. Can you cover my shift?"

"Jonas, I'm going out of town this weekend. Can you take my Saturday shift?"

"Jonas, I've got a wedding to attend next week. Can you cover my shift for me?"

As I scrolled further back, I noticed that Hubert had eventually stopped bothering with greetings or even asking nicely. His messages had become blunt commands.

"Cover my shift tomorrow."

He couldn't be bothered to show any courtesy or gratitude. All he did was inform me coldly.

Over the past two years, Hubert had asked me to cover for him more than a hundred times, and I'd agreed to eight out of every ten requests. But the moment I needed his help, suddenly I was nothing but a nuisance.

I knocked on my boss, Jeremy Langdon's, door.

"Come in."

"Mr. Langdon, my grandma is seriously ill. I'd like to take some time off."

He glanced at me over his glasses.

"What does your grandma being ill have to do with you? I can't approve that," he said. "Company policy requires leave requests to be submitted at least three days in advance. Last-minute requests don't count. If you fail to show up, it'll be treated as an unauthorized absence."

I left his office.

Hubert was sitting across from me, humming to himself with a smug grin.

"Jonas is just putting on an act. He doesn't want to work, so he's using his family as an excuse," he drawled. "Well, I'm not letting him get away with it! He'll learn that earning money isn't easy and that nobody owes him a favor."

He burst out laughing.

Just then, my phone rang.

On the other end, Mom struggled to speak through her tears. "Jonas… Your grandma's gone."

…

After my bereavement leave, I returned to work as usual.

Hubert arrived carrying a cardboard drink tray, handing out coffees to our colleagues one by one.

"Zara, here's your pumpkin spice latte, just the way you like it. Lillian, I got you a cappuccino. Thought you'd enjoy it.

"Olivia, here's some ginger tea. I remembered you're on your period, so I figured something warm might help with the cramps."

Hubert wore a warm, sincere smile, his expression so flawless it was impossible to find fault with.

Around him, my colleagues showered him with praise.

"Thanks, Hubert! You're always so thoughtful!"

"Hubert, you're too generous! You really shouldn't have!"

"Come on, we're all colleagues," he said, dismissing them with a wave. "It's nothing!"

But when he reached my desk, his hands were empty.

After finishing their notes, the two investigators stood up."Now, please refund every employee the full amount that was forcibly deducted from their wages as soon as possible."Hubert touched his expensive watch, shaking his head as he backed away."I've already spent the money on this watch. I don't have a single penny left. How am I supposed to pay everyone back?"He turned to me with a pleading look. "Jonas, I know you're kind. Weren't we best friends back then? Please, let me off this time. I really don't have any money left!"I found myself lost in thought. When I'd first met Hubert, he'd worn that same pitiful expression as he followed me around, begging me to cover his shifts time and time again.Part of it was that I genuinely had a soft heart and found it difficult to turn people down. But I also had my own reasons. I thought if I helped Hubert, he'd be willing to help me when I needed him.But I was wrong. He was nothing but a leech, constantly sucking benefits ou

My hands trembled slightly as I handed over the documents. The staff member examined the materials I had provided and told me to go home and wait for further notice. When I returned to the office, Hubert was proudly showing off his new watch. It was a luxury brand and had cost nearly 50,000 dollars. Our eyes met.He raised his chin, his face full of defiance, and deliberately waved his wrist to show off the watch. At least for now, there was nothing I could do to him. …Three days later, I received a call from the labor department. They informed me that they had accepted my complaint and opened an investigation. It wasn't long before the investigators arrived, and the once-bustling office fell completely silent."Who is Jonas Campbell?"I raised my hand."Who is the person in charge of this company?"Two minutes later, Mr. Langdon hurried downstairs, sweat beading on his forehead."Who is Hubert Gray?"Hubert gripped his sleeve, his hands trembling uncontrollably."Off

Hubert's son was dead. Lucille flew back from out of town that very night. Along with her parents, she stormed into the office and descended on Hubert, kicking and hitting him as they hurled abuse at him."You jinx! You brought this upon my grandson! Give me my grandson back!""I told you from the beginning that we should never have let him marry into our family. He's a man who can't even father a child on his own. What right does he have to make demands? And now look at what happened! He's lost even the child he had!""Sweetheart, get a divorce! You have to divorce him! Make that bastard leave with nothing. Don't give him a single cent!"Lucille stood there, clutching her son's death certificate."I'm divorcing him," she declared, her eyes bloodshot. "We'll file for divorce tomorrow."Panic flashed across Hubert's face. He opened and closed his mouth, his eyes darting around in desperation."Honey, I…" he sputtered. "This really wasn't my fault…"This time, all those colleag

I didn't budge an inch. I finished the last spoonful of spaghetti on my plate. "Jonas, my son is badly injured," Hubert cried, his eyes bloodshot. "He's waiting for the surgery to save his life! If you refuse to help me, you're killing him! You're essentially committing murder!"He screamed himself hoarse, but I didn't even look at him. "I'm not covering your shift," I said flatly. Hubert lunged at me and swept my plate off the table, sending the leftover braised ribs crashing to the floor. "My son is dying, and you're still eating?" he roared. "You're more vicious than the devil! You're a heartless monster! If anything happens to my son because of you, I won't let you get away with it—"A tingling sensation spread through my palm as Hubert's words were silenced abruptly. He fell to the floor, a vivid handprint visible on the right side of his face. He froze for a moment before suddenly slamming his head against the floor. With every impact, Hubert's cries grew more despe

When I went out to refill my mug at 3:25 pm, I spotted a client pacing back and forth in the hallway."Is Hubert Gray here?" the client asked. "We had a meeting scheduled for this afternoon, didn't we? He's already 20 minutes late. Where is he?""I don't know," I replied, shaking my head. The client frowned. He made several calls, but I guessed Hubert had put his phone on silent. "If your colleague can't even manage something as basic as punctuality, I'm seriously concerned about the caliber of your company," the client said, clearly irritated. "Forget doing business with your company from now on!"Someone peeked out from the office. "Who's that?""Looks like one of Hubert's clients. Why does he seem so angry?""Forget it. He's just a small client. It's none of our business. Let's get back to work."At 6:00 pm, when everyone was getting ready to pack up and head home, Mr. Langdon suddenly strode into the office, his face dark with anger."Where's Hubert?"My colleagues ex

Hubert waved the empty drink carrier in front of me, as if trying to prove a point. "Jonas, I miscounted and forgot to get you a drink," he said, putting on an apologetic expression. "I'll treat you next time, I promise."That was what he'd always say. I'd covered Hubert's shifts dozens of times, and every time, he'd made some empty promise."I'll take you out for a meal next time.""I'll buy you coffee next time.""If you ever need help with anything, just let me know."He'd only been paying lip service to being considerate, but I'd taken his words seriously. Ultimately, he'd taken advantage of me at every turn, then turned around and painted me as the bad guy.I didn't respond or look at him. "Jonas, are you still mad at me for refusing to swap shifts with you last time?" Hubert asked, sounding wounded. "I know you're holding it against me, but I really couldn't get away that day! You can't always put yourself first without considering how other people feel, can you?"Se
