Chapter 3

Author: Strawberry Pasty
Zachary turned slightly to glance at his phone. When he saw the message, a delighted look flashed across his face.

Selena, on the other hand, appeared calm as she stared at the message she received.

It was from Lucine.

The message read, "Selena, Zach's already spent quite a long while with you. Time for me to get him back."

Even through the screen, Selena could imagine the smug look on Lucine's face.

She didn't reply to the message and just turned off her phone screen.

When she raised her head again, her gaze met Zachary's. He gave her an apologetic look.

"Selena, there's unfortunately an emergency meeting at the company, so I have to head over there now. Once the meeting is over, I'll return immediately, okay?"

Though the words sounded like a question, his tone implied there wasn't any room for her to refuse.

Letting out a self-mocking laugh, she stared earnestly into Zachary's eyes and asked, "Do you have to go?"

Zachary hesitated for the briefest moment before nodding seriously. "Yes, I absolutely have to."

"Alright."

Upon hearing how easily she agreed, Zachary was rather surprised and a little uncertain.

He opened his mouth as if to speak, but ultimately grabbed his coat and left without another word.

Just like that, Selena was left alone in the room, which now felt empty.

She thought of the pink diamond necklace Zachary had just mentioned.

She really did like it and had been waiting for so long for it, so she decided she might as well buy it back now.

After getting herself ready, Selena left the house. She had only just stepped into the jewelry store when she spotted two familiar figures.

Lucine and Zachary.

In Lucine's hands was none other than the pink diamond necklace Selena had come here for.

Striding forward, Selena said to the store employee, "If I remember correctly, that necklace is the last of that series, and I happened to pre-order it half a year ago."

The employee's gaze darted between the three of them warily. Clearly, she was unsure what their relationship with each other was. It had only been half a year, yet the woman beside Zachary had changed.

Zachary hadn't expected Selena not to wait at home for him.

He stammered as he tried to explain, "I was here picking a gift for a client and coincidentally bumped into Lucy, so I—"

Selena ignored him and continued talking to the store employee. "Please wrap up that necklace for me."

A conflicted expression appeared on the employee's face. "Ms. Yane, this necklace was pre-ordered using Mr. Xenakis' name back then, so…"

Before Selena could respond, Lucine placed the necklace back on the viewing tray with red-rimmed eyes.

"This was originally supposed to be yours anyway, so I shouldn't have expected anything. It's my fault for not knowing my place. It's just that I never really had any nice things for the 20 years I was lost outside. That's why I couldn't tear my eyes away from this necklace. Sorry to put you in a difficult position, Zach."

As expected, the moment Zachary heard that, his heart broke for Lucine.

He turned to Selena, a displeased look in his eyes.

"Selena, as the older sister, isn't it only right for you to give in to your younger sister? You've always gotten whatever you wanted for all these years. Do you have to fight with her over a necklace? She's already had a tough life, so you should be more understanding."

With that said, he instructed the store employee, "Wrap it up for me, please."

After Zachary paid for the necklace, Lucine's eyes were practically glued to it.

She said to Zachary sweetly, "Thanks, Zach. Can you help me put it on?"

"Of course."

Zachary carefully brushed away Lucine's hair before helping her put on the million-dollar necklace.

While he was doing that, Lucine raised an eyebrow and shot Selena a disdainful smile.

Selena spun on her heel to leave, but then Lucine's voice rang out again, sounding aggrieved.

"Selena, where are you going? Are you angry with me?"

When Zachary regained consciousness, he didn't see any sign of Selena and laughed self-deprecatingly.It looked like she did hate him, he lamented.Selena walked into the hospital ward a second later with a lunchbox in her hand. She was a little shocked to see him awake."You're awake so soon? Hurry up and have some food, then."He said uncertainly, "I thought… you'd have left long ago…"Selena chuckled softly. "You were hurt because of me, after all, so I wouldn't have left before you woke up."She then changed the topic. "However, I won't show you any gratitude for this, because these incidents were all undeserved calamities that you brought upon me in the first place."Zachary lowered his head. He had indeed been the cause of everything. After a moment, he asked quietly, "Is it impossible for us to return to how we were in the past, Selena? No matter how much I apologize or make amends, I won't be able to bring you back anymore. Is that it?"Selena nodded. "The relationship

Selena turned to leave, but Zachary stopped her again. "I get it now, Selena. You're mad at me for treating Lucy too well, right? I admit, it's true that I didn't know where to draw the line."Please forgive me this once, okay? I swear to you that nothing like this will ever happen again in the future."Seeing that Selena wasn't saying anything, he pleaded again in a low voice, "Please forgive me, okay, Selena?""No."Before he could even begin to feel upset, Lucine's voice rang in his ears. "Zachary Xenakis. As expected, you came to look for Selena. Was everything you said to me yesterday a lie?"Zachary spun around and snapped icily, "You were following me, Lucine!"Lucine didn't respond to him and continued talking almost as if to herself. "You told me yesterday that you'd already given up on Selena and would live a happy life with me. You even said you'd take me abroad to relax. So, why exactly are you seeking out Selena again now?"Why are you always like this? You're alway

"What's this?" asked Lucine.Zachary replied, "This is why I asked you to come. I wanted to take you abroad for some fresh air, so I need you to sign an insurance policy."Lucine was overjoyed. "Really? Okay, I'll sign it right away!"After she signed the first page, Zachary turned a few more pages and said, "You have to sign here as well."A hint of suspicion crossed Lucine's eyes. "Why do I need to sign so many pages for an insurance policy?"Just as she was about to look through the document more carefully, Zachary stopped her and asked, "Do you not trust me, Lucy?"Ever since Selena married into the Chiton family, Zachary had very rarely called her Lucy. He would usually either address her absentmindedly or call her Lucine.Hearing him call her "Lucy" again made her lose all rationality, and she stopped trying to flip through the document. "Of course not! You're the person I trust the most."Zachary flashed her a pleased smile and put away the document after Lucine finished

By the time Zachary stumbled back to his hotel, it was already close to dawn. The coldness in the room was a constant reminder that Selena was no longer with him.He leaned dejectedly against the bed with a half-finished bottle of wine in his hand. "People say that wine is a wonderful thing that helps people forget all their worries. You'd better not let me down."He proceeded to drink the remaining wine in one gulp.He immediately felt a terrible pain in his head, and the burning sensation in his stomach made him break out in cold sweat. He took out his phone, which was displaying a photo of Selena, and repeatedly stroked his fingers across the screen. "I miss you so much, Selena…"Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and he instantly sobered up greatly. He murmured to himself, "It's Selena. Selena must have come to see me. She's still as smart as ever. Even if I didn't tell her my address, she still managed to find me…"But after saying that, he seemed to think of something and subco

Zachary and Lucine instantly lapsed back into calm silence, and they just looked at each other. Then, Zachary stumbled upright and started walking away.Lucine hurriedly grabbed his hand and asked, "Where are you going, Zach?"He shook off her hand, but she stubbornly stuck to his side again. "I'm going wherever you are, Zach.""Go away!" he yelled. He pushed her hard, causing her to fall onto the sand. Sand and sharp gravel cut into her hand, and blood started flowing out uncontrollably. However, Zachary walked off without a second thought, as if he hadn't seen her get hurt.He left Lucine where she was, crying miserably. As he walked and walked, he came upon a bar. He proceeded to order a few glasses of hard liquor and downed a glass in one gulp. The bartender was a little worried for him and offered him a kind reminder. "The liquor you ordered has high alcohol content, sir. It's not good for your health to drink it like this. How about I swap them out for some lighter drinks

"It's shameful of you to take advantage of someone else's plight, Michael Chiton," Zachary said angrily. "Selena and I are childhood sweethearts. What right do you have to come between us?"Before Michael could say anything, Selena stepped protectively in front of him.She said ruthlessly, "I'm already married to Michael. There hasn't been anything between us in a long time, so I hope you won't continue to pester me in the future!"This was the first time Zachary had witnessed Selena speak so harshly, and for another man, too.Tears subconsciously flowed from his eyes. "Do you not want me anymore, Selena? We've been childhood sweethearts for more than 20 years. How could you bear to leave me like this?"I don't believe it. I don't believe that you really don't love me anymore. You're just angry with me, right? I'll wait, so let's have a proper talk after you've calmed down."The corners of his eyes grew increasingly redder as he endlessly chattered away like a pitiful child who h
