Chapter 2

Author: Jasmine Flower
"I'm the Alpha. I know everyone in this Pack inside and out." Kaelan's brow furrowed as he held Seraphina. "She's dying. We draw the blood. Now."

When I didn't move, his voice dropped—lower, harder. "Beckett. Take her to the drawing room."

"No." I stepped back.

Kaelan went still.

"Elara!" He hurled my name like a weapon, fire in his voice. "Do you not understand? She's dying. When someone's life is on the line, how can you be this selfish?"

"I'm pregnant. I can't donate blood." I held his gaze. "And it's yours. The pup I'm carrying is yours."

"I know you don't like me. I know you want me dead." Seraphina's voice came out thin, reedy—perfect for someone on the edge of death. "You don't have to save me. Just don't use pregnancy as an excuse. The Healer said your uterus was damaged. Said you'd never carry."

"But I am pregnant."

Kaelan called for the pack physician anyway.

Five minutes later, the results came back negative.

I stared at the screen. That wasn't possible. That couldn't be—

Kaelan's jaw tightened, anger flickering through his eyes. "We're wasting time. Save her."

"No." I grabbed my suitcase.

"Stop."

He shifted Seraphina's weight to one arm and caught my wrist with the other. His grip was iron. My bones ground together beneath his fingers.

"You say you love me. You've always said it." His eyes flickered gold—wolf pushing through. "And now you'd let her die? This is how you love me, Elara?"

"Let go."

"After you donate." He pulled. Dragged me toward the house. "It's fifteen milliliters. Maybe twenty. It won't hurt you."

Two steps. Three. My legs went soft beneath me.

I hadn't eaten since yesterday. Hadn't slept. Hadn't drunk anything. And there was a pup inside me, drawing what little I had left.

"Kaelan." Beckett's voice came hesitant. "She doesn't look good. Maybe we should—"

"What could be wrong with her? The test was negative." Kaelan cut him off. "She's Pureblood. A few milliliters of blood won't kill her. After you donate, we'll do the mating ceremony. Right here. Right now. Happy now?"

He glanced back at me like he was offering a favor. Like this was a gift I should be grateful for.

And in that moment, after all these years, I finally saw him clearly.

I thought of the night he saved my life. Years ago. Before any of this.

Consider this repayment for that night.

"Fine." My voice came out flat. "I'll do it."

Beckett guided me to a chair. The needle slid in. Dark red filled the vial.

Kaelan took it the second it was full and turned away.

"Kaelan."

He didn't stop.

I watched his back—broad, familiar, already walking toward her—and said the words clear and slow.

"We're even."

He hesitated. Half a step. Then kept going.

The world went dark.

---

When I opened my eyes, I was staring at a white ceiling. Antiseptic burned my nose.

"Awake." Theron sat beside the bed, his expression grim.

I tried to move. My body wouldn't cooperate. Hollow. Scraped out. Empty.

"Don't." He pressed a hand to my shoulder. "You've been out for a day and a half. Do you understand that?"

A day and a half.

"The pup?" I asked.

"Still there." Theron's eyes locked onto mine. "But you're not. Your body has nothing left. Six months. No stress. No blood loss. No injuries. Do you hear me?"

He left after that. But the door didn't close all the way.

Two nurses. Voices low. I wasn't meant to hear.

"That woman in there—Theron's been texting her mate all day. Not one reply."

"I heard the phone call. The guy said, and I quote, 'What do I care if she passed out? She's not my mate.'"

A pause. Then: "Wait. So she's the other woman?"

I closed my eyes and let the tears fall.

Two more days. Just two more days until my travel clearance came through. Then I could leave.

---

Evening came. I forced myself out of bed and made it to the Moonlight Garden. Needed air. Space.

I'd barely taken three steps when footsteps fell in behind me.

"Well, well. If it isn't Elara."

I turned. Pack Council Members. Three of them. The one in front I recognized—Damon. Newly promoted Captain of the Guard.

"Heard she faked a pregnancy so the Alpha would mate her." Damon's gaze crawled over me. "Heard she tried to bargain with her Pureblood blood a couple days ago. Wanted the ceremony in exchange."

Laughter from the others.

"Desperate much?" another one chimed in. "You can't force something that isn't meant to be. Why make yourself the other woman?"

Damon stepped closer, smile ugly. "You know, you're not bad-looking. Forget him. I don't have a fated mate. I could give you a ceremony. A real one. With me, you wouldn't be second best."

I said nothing. Walked around them.

"Stop." Damon's hand shot out, blocking my path. "I wasn't finished—"

"Say that again."

Kaelan's voice cut through the garden like a blade.

I looked up. He stood at the entrance, silhouetted against the dying light.

The Alpha command in his voice hit them all at once. They shook where they stood. Trembled.

Kaelan didn't wait for Damon to repeat himself. He crossed the distance in three strides and closed his hand around Damon's throat. Squeezed. Held until Damon's face went purple, until his eyes rolled back, until he was maybe a second from death.

Then he dropped him.

"Get out."

The others scattered like leaves in a storm.

Kaelan walked to me. Stopped inches away. Looked down.

"You shouldn't be out here if you're unwell." His brow furrowed. "Theron said you passed out. Didn't think it was that serious."

He turned to leave. Stopped.

"And stop trying to get my attention like this. Fainting? It's just pathetic, Elara."

A beat.

"The mating ceremony will happen. But let's be clear—it's a transaction. Nothing more."

Transaction.

His voice came from somewhere above me. Like he was tossing scraps to a beggar.

Hospital corridor. I stood outside the emergency room.Silas stood beside me, his hand wrapped around mine.A long time passed. Then the doors opened. The doctor walked out. He said Kaelan would live. But the burns on his back were severe. He'd need long-term treatment. At least three months in bed."He's awake. He wants to see you."I walked in.Kaelan lay on his stomach on the hospital bed, his back wrapped in thick gauze. His face was pale as paper. When he saw me, something flickered in his eyes—quick, bright.I walked to the bed and looked down at him."Thank you for saving me."He blinked. Then shook his head. "You don't have to thank me.""But I don't forgive you."The light in his eyes died."Elara, I—""Let me finish. You saved my life. I won't forget that. But what happened before—I haven't forgotten that either. I won't ever forget it. We're done."He lowered his head."The pup." His voice came out rough. "When the pup comes, he’ll need a father.""Someone will love him like

The next few days, Kaelan didn't leave. He checked into the hotel across from my place. Every morning, he stood outside the studio waiting for me to finish work. Every evening, he stood outside my courtyard waiting for me to come home.He didn't speak. Didn't come close. Just stood there. That evening, I walked out of the studio and he blocked my path again."Elara. Five minutes. That's all I'm asking."I stopped. Looked at him.He drew a breath. "Seraphina's been in the cells for a month. Over three thousand lashes. I had them remove her womb."His voice flattened."I threw her out across the border. She'll never come near you again. Ever."He reached into his jacket."The mating ceremony ring. I kept it. The ceremony never happened. Not without you."He opened the small box.I looked at the ring. Felt nothing."Are you done? I'm leaving."I walked around him.---That night, I lay in bed and heard something outside.I pulled back the curtain. Kaelan stood outside the courtyard gate,

I sat in the small courtyard of the Southern Pack, a cup of hot tea cradled in my hands.Sunlight spilled over me, warm and lazy. I glanced down at my stomach. It had started to curve, just slightly. After I left, I'd chosen this place to land. No one here knew me.I set the tea down and picked up the blueprints beside me. This was what I used to do—architectural design. I'd given it up for Kaelan back then. Looking at it now, I couldn't believe how foolish I'd been."Elara."A voice came from the gate. I looked up. Silas stood there, a bag of fruit in his hand.Silas was a neighbor I'd met here. A native wolf of the Southern Pack. He ran a small architectural design studio. When I first arrived, I'd happened to apply for a position there. That was how we met."How are you feeling today?" He walked in and set the fruit on the table. "Brought you some oranges. Thought you might like them."I smiled. "How did you know I like sour things?""Saw you eating a lemon outside your window last

Kaelan walked in. Pulled the silver blade from his belt and pressed it against the doctor's throat."What illness does she have?"The doctor's legs gave out. He hit the floor, hands up."None! She's not sick! Seraphina was never sick!"His voice cracked, words tumbling out."Those records are fake. The silver sickness is fake. She's been perfectly healthy this whole time."A gasp. Then more."The pregnancy is fake too. She made me forge the report. She said if you acknowledged the pup, the mating ceremony would have to happen."Kaelan lowered the blade. Turned to Seraphina. Her face was paper-white. But her chin still lifted."Yes. I lied. So what?" Her voice shook, but she forced the words out. "What does she have that I don't? I'm better for you. More understanding. More worthy of being your mate."Kaelan backhanded her across the face.Seraphina flew off the bed. Hit the floor hard. One hand pressed to her cheek, she stared up at him, disbelief flooding her eyes."Why?" Kaelan looke

The Ceremony Hall gleamed. Marble floors reflected cold white light.Kaelan stood on the dais, the wolf fang ring clutched in his palm—the symbol of the mating ceremony. His gaze fixed on the closed hall doors. His frown deepened by the second."Alpha." Beckett's voice came quiet at his side. "It's time."Kaelan didn't move. Just tightened his grip on the ring."Wait."Murmurs rippled through the Pack members gathered below. Another half hour bled away. Beckett turned and walked toward the doors. He'd barely reached them when the hall swung open from outside.Kaelan's head snapped up.It wasn't Elara.Seraphina glided in, dressed in white, her smile perfectly arranged. She stopped at the base of the dais and tilted her head up."Kaelan. Elara's not coming. She said she's gone. She doesn't want to be here today."Kaelan stared at her. Said nothing.Seraphina climbed the steps. Positioned herself at his side. Lowered her voice."So many people came. The ceremony should happen. I could do

"Don't bother."Kaelan's turn toward me stalled mid-motion. Confusion flickered across his face.I spelled it out, one word at a time. "I don't need your pity ceremony."I looked at him.Handsome. Tall. The kind of man who stopped traffic. Still made my heart stutter. But I'd never let him break me again."Pity?" His expression darkened. "You conspired with Theron. Told me you were carrying my pup. Fainted. Stayed unconscious for a full day and night. You did all of that for this ceremony. Don't pretend otherwise."A bitter laugh escaped me.He thought that was manipulation. All of it."Playing hard to get?" His voice softened—condescending. "Enough. Stop this."He reached out. Rubbed my head the way he used to. Then seemed to think better of it, pulled his hand back, cleared his throat.Beckett jogged up, clutching a bouquet of Moonlight Flowers."Alpha. The flowers you wanted." He held them out. "Fresh from the Moonlight Garden. Just picked."Kaelan took them. Extended them toward me
